    I have a Seal Pup elite and I have ran it through a rigorous set of test of batoning different woods such a pine, oak and some other type of hard wood and it held up great. No damage to the tip or blade edge at all. The knife feels good in hand, easy to work with and control ... thumbs up to SOG on this one for sure.

      Same. I had part of my middle finger chopped off one time when using a machete so I know how shit like that can happen no matter how skilled you are. Shit happens way too fast for you to react, he's lucky that he didn't get a 7" blade in the leg.

    Great review. I picked up one with same sheath at a pawn shop used but in like-new condition for $20.00...best twenty bucks I ever spent. I'm a knife nut and have a big bag of different full tang survival knives with blade lengths that range from 5 inches to 9 or 10 inches+, some are budget knives that are very good and others are expensive that are great. But this one has always been one that always goes with me a camping trips, or excursions into the woods. All around great do-it-all knife. It's a keeper, that's for sure. I even bought my 12 year old son one to take when we go on our outings.

    Awesome looking forward to the review. I love taking my NW Ranger on hikes- lightweight, FFG, comfy handle, and looks to be a good self defense. I enjoyed Nutn's interview w/ SOG too. I can't believe he has so many haters out there. His personality isn't for everyone but he puts out some awesome content. I've learned a lot from his videos. Your channel is like his, but more tailored for knife nuts- which is why I'm a big fan.

    I also, about 6months ago, got caught up in that way of thinking. I have since realized that is not true and love SOG and their quality. The owner of SOG is very involve in the production and design of their products and wants his knives to be used hard and backs them all with a lifetime warranty. It all has to do with the Heat/Freezing treatment SOG does. Watch NUTNFANCY'S interview with the owner of SOG. I have a whole new respect for the company.

I've heard and I don't remember if it was the regular seal knife or the pup that was issued to navy seals recently. True or not I do know a lot of spec force guys that absolutely love this knife. This knife is a great Combat/Fighting Knife. In fact it's my back up knife and is always on my Pack Strap just in case. (My Main Knife is a Buck 105 with a flap over sheath.)

    I'm sorry I forgot to say.
    I never broke my knife and I even had to dig with it quite a few times. I handed it down to my son. It didn't have much black on the blade when I did lol , BUT other than that it is a good knife. My son saw some of how I used that knife and he loved it. Is why I gave it to my son. I have a peace knowing my son will be out in the forests hunting and camping carrying that knife . Yes that knife is still good.

    i think it's interesting that the newer/revised version of the seal pup is now this, nearly the same knife as the seal pup elite [minus the rasping and a different sheath, along with different blade coatings and serrations/plain] when just a few years ago, the seal pup had that extra finger choil and was made of AUS-6.
    i have a seal pup elite with satin finish, it's a beast and now even better with a reprofiled edge. keep up the vids, i've been going through a lot of them.

    Say Heah Aaron, I like making set's with my knives and usually I like buying knives for sets with the same manufactors. But I made a very nice set with a few different manufactors tgat are from other sets. I paired my S.O.G. Seal Pup Elite with a C S Recon Tanto, I also added a Estwing Double Bit Hatchet and I added a BK-14 as a neck knife with this set. Extravagant, maybe, but I can go for a lenght lyrics trio and cover all bases. I like to on person my Recon Tanto and attach my Seal Pup Elite to the front of my backpack with the Double Bit Hatchet. I didn't buy all these knives at the same time, but this set also didn't cost a arm and a lrg. Fir under $250.00 you can buy 5 knives, which I think is pretty good for a good quality set. I also use the Recon Tanto when I baton kindling and I can exchange the knife without taking off my belt. Oh, I also included my Wicked Tough Saw that's 5 right ? heh heh heh, So yeah, if I go Scouting and away from my pack, I have two knives on me, a Canteen my saw and on my Military Web belt I have a necessities pouch with compass, firesteel, first aid etc. Not bad for the price and have all bases covered. I prolly couldn't build a cabin, but I can accomplish and have alot of fun in the bush. Again your spot on on your reviews, Thanx, Aaron.

    Hey, I've watched a few of your videos and liked them, but I have a suggestion: For the stabbing/tactical demonstration, you might want to get yourself a pair of Kevlar cut-proof gloves. I know you're being careful, but if you slip, those deerskin gloves might not protect your hand enough. We use the Kevlar gloves at work a lot and they're light and inexpensive. Keep up the good work.

    I paid $32 for mine, but I have noticed they seem to be coming back and the price is still around $35.00 or less. I have the M37-CPN-6136 (Look for Lee Ermey's face on the packaging) with the nylon sheath and the shorter blade. I like the grip, and it's substantial yet the knife is very light. I don't feel like I had to settle or bought crap. It's just their basic, no frills model, but it's sweet.

    Made in Taiwan, I am sorry!!! Lol! When I bought Ontario knives from the US of A, grinding on the blade was like the guy was drunk. When I bought anything from Asia, Linton Seal Survival, a Chinese Strider Clone, an Albainox/Deception bayonet, Fake Extrema Ratio, the grinding was spot on! Quality again. So made in Taiwan should actually be a compliment!

    Great review. I have a full size KABAR tactical/fighting knife but it is so big and looks so intimidating I never carry it with me so I have been looking for something smaller and more inconspicuous. I looked at this knife today in a store and held it. It felt really nice, looked like great quality, and super sharp out of the box. REALLY wanted it but thought I would do some research before buying it. Everywhere I look people have great things to say about this knife! Think I may get two now.

    I have a SOG NW Ranger and I can really appreciate SOG now. It seems like a lot of reviewers have a bias for expensive blades and I got caught up in it. Seems like the consensus among them is that a survival blade has to be 1/4" thick, 5" blade, 1095 carbon steel, and full exposed tang. I don't have a Seal Pup, but it looks plenty capable. I look forward to your vids every week, keep being awesome!

    But this will be a great all-in-one knife kit for camping and emergency with that usable pouch. How big can that pouch take? for example, how big of a Leatherman multitool can it hold? I plan to put in a BIC mini lighter, a sharpener (maybe) and a few length of paracord.

      I put one of those Coghla's Magnesium Fire Starters in mine and there was enough room for a single blade folding pocket knife and a sharpening stone. So you can get quite a bit in it. A box of Coleman Waterproof Camp Matches can also fit, but it's a bit snug. The lid for the pouch is rather tall with lots of velcro, so taller items are able to fit as well.

      VroomToRaftel i can fit an extra 10 rd clip for a .40 XD in the pocket perfectly, it sticks out the of the pocket, but the velco strap holds it in place

    glad I waited till about last year before I bought this knife. I only paid 32.00 dollars for a sog seal pup elite on Amazon. reading all these comments of some people who paid 100 bucks is insanely expensive for this knife. it's a great knife though and I do like it but 100 for aus8 is overpriced in my opinion. ,

    great review. I'm wondering where you get the $50 thing from? I bought this from Cabelas in Reno last year and it was around $100, and when I look on the SOG website its $98. Where are you finding it for around $50? I think the Pup is worth what you would expect from a $100 knife.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  Před 10 lety

      It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a knife to pair with a hatch or large survival knife the seal pup is it. If you are looking for a medium knife to do some light chopping and batoning the Bowie 2.0 is the blade for you.

    Really good review. Straight and to the point. No lagging in what you are wanting to say. Also, good sharpness tests and camera work. None of that close-up out of focus shit (I work at a TV station so that stuff gets on my nerves). I have this knife and have yet to use it for fear of messing up my factory edge or the powder coating. How did you think the edge held up? After your review I believe I will take mine out into the woods and practice some survival skills.
    I will check out some of your other videos.

      Hutch O'Matic haha, i was like you for years, i didnt want to use it, cause i thought it was just so awesome, and i didnt want to ruin it in any way, from my experience the solution was to buy about 40 more knives and learn how to resharpen to at least a paper cutting edge along way, now every knife i buy the first thing i do is take it to wood, whether chopping or whittling depending on the type of knife and test it out, seal pup holds a pretty good edge, still like brand new, but i didnt beat on it too hard, it was the first fixed blade i ever bought, so its still kinda like my baby

    • @ManuFortiMcCoy
      @ManuFortiMcCoy Před 9 lety

      MrPocketfullOfSteel Well just so you know, I did take it out and use it and I did scratch off some of the powder coating on the spine while using it on a fire starter. So keep your "Oh, please. Ha!" to yourself because now my blade has places where the powder coating has come off.

    Seal Pup's where made in AUS 6, and the Search Pup Elite is in AUS 8, but the S.O.G. Cryo Tempering is what keeps the steel sharper longer. I really like the S.O.G's process !

    You almost put a hole in your thigh at 3:25 lol careful there!!! One time I made a knife out of wood and stained it and everything (I was 13) and I was walking around and somehow I managed to bump into a door frame and nearly take out my eyeball I missed it by about an eighth of an inch. I don't even know what the hell I was doing or why the knife was facing toward me....

      praire_creek97 ya, im not a big fan of serrations either, i believe they make this knife in a straight edge version now, it might be part of the elite line, but i know ive seen straight edge on the full size seal, and i think a TINI coated version of the pup elite
