Kershaw definitely has their finger on the pulse of the industry on the whole. Not just the small EDC community (as they like to think these huge companies should do what they say 🤣). The community gets their online-only exclusives at times, which is nice, but Kershaw is catering to the entirety of the knife-buying world. That's why this knife uses D2. Great steel for a budget fixed blade. I dig it, just wish it was USA-made (among other knives in their catalog). I guess if people made enough noise, they'd put out a USA-made fixed blade. But not likely this model, as they never suddenly switch manufacturing from China to USA on any one particular model; see: Iridium. Thanks GT 😎

I just bought the Kershaw Federalist…WOW! Very nice and on sale at $49. My first knife I bought when I joined the USCG in 1990 was the Kershaw Blackhorse made in Japan, used it in my 30 year career and still have it!

That fixed blade is a perfect size for EDC. I've been carrying something like that plus or minus a quarter inch, for years. Multiple brands. I have the Buck you showed, but I would prefer the sheath of the Kershaw. I carry mine scout or cross draw at the 9:30-10:00 because I carry my sidearm at 3:30. I don't like my fixed blade hanging vertical from my belt.

I like both besides the jimping on the Seppe because I never like jimping on any knife. But I think the Seppe would make a great backpackers knife. Just throw in your backpack as the 'just in case' fixed blade knife. I agree if you plan to use your knife a lot I would like a thicker handle but for occasional use the slim profile is perfect.

I’ve only bought one Kershaw knife in my life, I still have it to remind me to never buy another one, this video hasn’t changed my mind. It’s amazing how one end of a company can’t shake the cheap crap outlook, and the other end seems like pure quality though expensive. I have several ZT knives. And I’m in the low income bracket.

  • @random_eskimo_in_the_rockies

I do really like the Steppe, but I can't be the only one who thinks Kershaw really needs to change their high quality budget steel from D 2 to Sandvik's 14C28N. Civivi and Bestech can offer it in sub-$50 knives, Kershaw should be able to, as well. The edge retention won't be quite as good, but that is MORE than offset by being much easier to resharpen, much, MUCH tougher, and very stainless to boot. If that Steppe was offered in 14C28N, I'd have one in every car and truck I own as well as one in each jump kit/Go Bag I have around.

Nice video Aaron! I will check out the Grayl. The Roxon is awesome, as you know. I looked at the Cold Steel AirLite recently but decided to go with a drop point Civivi Sendy designed by Ben Petersen. As a SAK guy, I love it. Just a tad larger than a 93mm Alox, and the action is incredible with an in line back flipper design. Comes with toothpick, tweezers and Nitro V steel. As for pry bars, Lever Gear came out with their Edge XT to compete against the Gerber Prybrid X. Smaller than both the Prybrid and X, it's got a lot of cool features including a magnetized hex drive.

I've been watching you for a long time and the other person whose videos I really like are from everyday tactical vids and Brian of survival on purpose. Now there are a few people who I will not mention that simply show knives and while it's nice to see what's out there it gets to be too much and plus there's this attitude among a lot of nice people that $100 or less is nothing to spend on a knife which for some people it isn't but for a lot us even a $20 knife is not disposable I like that you focus on the functionality regardless of how pretty the knife is or how plain or fancy the materials are. I just saw this knife in another video and I thought it was the only one that was actually practical and as soon as you started talking about it you made me happy because you always see value or you see "just another knife" companies hope people will buy. I cannot afford nor do I want to be led to believe that I have to buy or to even like many of the knives that are available. In the real world many of us are on a budget but we do like to occasionally buy something and you understand that.

Another valuable review. I am somewhat aghast that the otherwise appealing fixed blade "features" that unnecessary perforation exactly at an obvious stress point. The handle is now attached to the blade by two narrow bands of steel. Securing a blade in a sheath is a problem solved long ago without cutting away needed steel. Also, not a great fan of D-2.

Meh. Not trying to pick a fight, and not saying you’re wrong, but it was clearly a stylistic choice on an “EDC utility blade” and not a structural choice on a survival knife. Pretty sure that “weak” part of the handle junction could stand up to just about anything the blade could. I agree it’s not necessary, and is a visual bump when you first see it. But I don’t see it as a planet killer for what this knife will see in terms of duty.

      @JohnSmith-gs4lw Před 2 měsíci +1

I know exactly what you are talking about, but I believe that fate rests on specific polymers and not all rubberized items. Seems like it’s always something that requires a lot of contact, like a computer mouse, or a IR TV remote control! It is nasty. I haven’t found a way to deal with it, even after watching several YT videos claiming to have a “clean up” solution. That being said, it seems to happen to “rubber” that has a satin/soft finish to it. I do not believe this is that. Think of it this way. Have you ever heard of Cold Steel SRK handles getting gummy? Or Mora Craftline handles or Gerber Strongarm handles getting gummy? I don’t think that’s a problem here.

G'day Aaron, I'm really pleased to see Kershaw doing well ...... that's what can happen when you listen to the market.
Seems to me, many brands think customers dont notice all the details that make up a good experience IN ACTUAL USE. Stupid really, knife dudes and reviewers, are rightly, gonna critique the hell out of it ; ) In fairness, I do think valid design decisions still often get lost between the drawing board/original design intent and the point of sale.
Anyway, I'm always gonna go with belt high or low ride/dangler belt loops .... obviously not much good for concealment, though it does mean sheath dimensions and shape are far less of an issue, easy draw and of course no pokey pokey in the rib area, ....... f'k I hate that ; )
Incidentally, I wonder what the average, or most common, or range, of palm width is, finger length for that matter too ? ........ perhaps the glove makers out there can ...... lend a hand ...... with that ; )
    Cheers Duke.

Has Kershaw gone back to the “No questions asked” warranty or are they still “reviewing” warranty claims?
I was a Kershaw fan until they went away from the customer focused warranty policies, and that comes from someone who’s never broken a knife.

Can it be scout carry? Carried an Izula II for a bit and it got rusty. Been looking for something else that is more stainless than 1095, not that D2 is stainless but still. Any recommendations? $50-$100?

Looks like it can be scout carried one of 2 ways. Either take the clip off and mount it on the middle holes of the sheath, or using those lashing points and add a bit of paracord to make a spot for the belt to go through
