  • The SOG Seal Pup is one of my favorite knife designs so I wanted to compare the Seal Pup Elite with the original to see if one was better than the other. So, since this was almost 2 knife reviews in one, this video ran a little longer than usual. Which one is your favorite? The models reviewed in this video are:
    Seal Pup M37K and the Seal Pup Elite E37SN-CP

    Yeah, those are great EDC fixed blades. I've got the Seal Pup with the serrated edge. Took that floppy nylon strap off the sheath and added a tek-loc style lock. Aus8 is a great all-around blade steel despite what some people like to think because it is not their precious S35VN. My Taiwan Seal Pup has a 4.85" blade just like the Elite too. They are not .190 thick though, they are both .156 or 5/32". The digital calipers don't lie haha.

    The buyers on Amazon approved. I don't like serrated edges except on tomato knives. My brother in law and nephew said they liked serrated edges to cut webbing. I can't remember ever cutting webbing so maybe that's it. I want that section of edge razor sharp.

      I don't need expensive to be effective.
      A very wise/true statement BUT in MANY case's todays SOG knives [including your SOG salute] rise only to the level of a ''Walmart special'' that are more gimmick than anything else !
      Having experienced the HORRIBLE ergonomics and multitude of ''hot spots'' on the SOG salute personally I have to wonder about how you actually use this knife effectively without discomfort OR it could be that you don't REALLY use the folder to the degree that it becomes uncomfortable !
      Opening letters ,tape or possibly cutting open thin cardboard shipping envelopes is about the ONLY scenario where the SOG salute could be considered functional because just about ANY task/use beyond that it becomes so incredibly uncomfortable to hold on to that its unusable !

    I got seal pup, and the full size one also. My pup came with A different sheath,probably a nylon material,and it rattles slightly. I added piece of leather to silence the rattle. My full size seal did come with the kydex sheath. I’ve skinned many a deer and hog with my seal pup. The powder coat finish is showing wear,but I’ve had them both 25 plus years , probably when they were available for public purchase.

    I have a seal pup, the original, that coating has really lasted through some stuff, I've had it maybe a decade now. Gutted at least 8 deer, a few rabbits, some ducks. It's not the best for that but I use all my knives to make sure they're good to go, and it is. That serrated part actually makes pretty quick work of a rib cage.

    SOG has some of their Seal Pup Elite Knives made in Japan, and some are made in Taiwan. I believe the Taiwan made knives are to the specs of the regular Pup version and the Japan knives are longer and thicker. But it may be other way around.

    Your co-star is a handsome fella. Kuma I believe is Japanese for "bear". At my age it probably won't happen, but I've always thought if I ever got an Akita I would name him Kuma. As for the knives, if they are actually used by the Naval Special Warfare types, it is probably more for cutting throats and burying in skulls than for survival, although they look like they could do that job fairly well.

    Nice review. I appreciate the info on the tang (the knife kind of feels to me like its full tang, but its so light and the handle material is already pretty hard, so its a little hard to tell). I also appreciate showing the baton test. It's a good knife and a solid choice imo (I've had one for a few years, but honestly, I've barely used it), though I might catch some hate here by saying in that size and price range, I think I actually like the Mora Garberg better, though I don't feel like anyone would go wrong with either choice.

  • @tikkidaddy
    @tikkidaddy Před 2 lety +3

    The SOG SEAL 2000 was originally issued to BUDs trainees, and passed every test the USN subjected it to including gasoline immersion and soak testing to prove handle durability. The USN later switched to the CS SRK, well before CS decided it was time to earn the "gas station knife" scout badge😂. One of my Seal 2Ks was made in Japan, the other in Taiwan. Coatings were candy tough, basically for non reflective but the knives have never failed me.
    Just because the USN issued the knives does not mean the individual warrior carries a knife on campaign, he may carry it to his locker and store it in favor of a much better knife😂

    In a real survival situation. Since you obviously have a saw to cut 90 degree angles on your firewood before batoning. Wouldn't you use the saw to cut a v notch and use a sharpened piece of limb to use as a splitter or baton to save your knife ? Better yet, there are always enough twigs around if there is dead wood. No use for batonong unless you are trying to get sap wood to start a fire. And then all you have to do is shave a bit of it off. Just asking....have you ever spent time in the woods actually depending on this ? I have. I call your bluff dude.
