"lazy learners" for ex-Mormons is hilarious. Ex-Mormons will drop detailed historical lectures faster than a professional reenactor
The point is they are spiritually lazy. It takes spiritual effort to understand God. "The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to know [them], because they are discerned spiritually" ~ 1 Corinthians 2:14. This church teaches the wise use of the intellect to get to heaven, that God answers our prayers through our spirit, mind, and heart after we study any matter fully ourselves and practice making good judgements first before getting confirmation from God. See Doctrine and Covenants 6, 8, 9, and 11.

@@spencergellsworth I guess so. I only know of one such marriage of Joseph's, which was not consummated because it was for the next life. The natural man is easy to deceive, to influence to misunderstand and assign evil intent. Some fake disciples did it to Jesus when he spoke of the sacrament (John 6). The natural man looks for excuses to fail, but the better angels of our nature look for ways to succeed through spiritual hard work.

Theres no reason to think he didn't consummate with them especially seeing as in the 1892 trial 3 of his child brides confirmed consumption as to "not hurt the church". Most of them were given as property by their fathers so their families could be closer to prosperity and was not the choice of those children.

Some dates and details of Joseph’s plural marriages are debated because it was kept secret because it was not well accepted. However, back then it was an accepted practice to court and marry early generally. Even in the 1960’s they did; Loretta Lynn was 13 years old when married and Priscilla Presley’s was 14 years old when she dated Elvis. (Also, though not a real couple as far as we know, the story of Romeo and Juliet reflects customs and accepted practices, her being only 13 when she married Romeo).
Faith is the very thing that keeps so many people lazy. I always told myself “I know I don’t understand this, but I have faith that I will understand it one day, in this life or the next.” And then I just stopped thinking about it. THAT’S being a “lazy learner”. When I finally started looking into everything, I became the opposite of lazy.
Faith, in LDS theology is “an enabling power.” What does it enable us to do? Not merely wait around for an answer. Absent work it is not faith. At the same time, absent truly seeking God’s influence and help in the process is not faith, either.

He taught faith means we persevere even through lifelong challenges and even during plagues. Mountains of misery are turned for good through faith.
1. Study about Jesus and love him, follow him. Learn about Miracles and how they are preceded by FAITH.
2. Pray and practice hearing the HG, which includes following his counsel. Take doubt and questions to the Lord to received counsel from Him. Revelation takes work.
3. Fast - this takes work to master self.
4. Serve - Act in faith. What would you do if you had more faith? Turn adversity for good like Jesus did.
5. Prepare and partake in Holy Ordinances.
I shared this “lazy learners” quote on my page with a comment defending those who leave and started a shit storm with a bunch of active Mormons. Wish me luck 😅

I had someone use this line of reasoning with me. Something to the effect of:
“If all you look for is flaws, that’s all you’ll find.”
Isn’t this the one true church? Isn’t the Book of Mormon the “most correct book” on earth? Why are there this flaws in the first place?
“Don’t search the scriptures for contradictions” gives me major “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” vibes
A thought on happiness: When I was in the church I remember not only being unhappy, because of multiple untreated mental illnesses, but also a large part of my guilt in the church was that the church teaches that you *are* happy, not that you *can be* happy. When I wasn’t feeling well emotionally for any reason, I felt that I couldn’t be honest about that, to myself or to others. Some of that mindset of feeling like you have to prove to the world how happy you are persists in the exmormon community also, which I’m sure in a lot of ways is a learned behavior from being in the church. It’s great to be happy and its also perfectly okay to not be happy, and to explore that and process emotions and continue to grow.
I never liked how the church teaches that depression is from the devil.
Interesting, because you can typically get (and I got, on many occasions) access to free mental health care, through your bishop. I had issues with social anxiety and religious scrupulosity, and was able to work through it.
There are certainly people who can feel that way, mainly because there is a strong correlation between psychological health and happiness and religion (thus, most people in most religions will actually BE more happy than the rest of the population). So, I can definitely see where you're coming from, and how that might make you feel different.

I remember when in conferences he said Do not be the weak link in your family tree that keeps ancestors and posterity from getting temple ordinances and that has stuck with me it hit hard. I felt like everyone was looking at me because I've been in a cycle of leaving and being sucked back in. But now I'm 18 and I can't stay anymore with what I know I'm leaving once I get to university. Finally, I’m deprogrammed from all the conditioning and brain washing. It’s been 12 years since I was “shunned “ by the bishop in my ward. It’s taken a lot of therapy and work, but I feel so relaxed and happy now. Ironically I’m more loving and accepting of my fellow humans now than before and enjoy a spiritual awareness that is so healing and healthy for my personal growth. Listening to the concepts presented from the general conference reminds me of how oppressive and complicated life was as a Mormon girl . I’m like you though, grateful for my past and life journey that has brought me to beautiful now 🌈💜

Choosing to believe IS lazy learning. It takes effort and dedication to examine and question your previous assumptions and beliefs, following the evidence to whatever the conclusion turns out to be. That’s what leads people out!

Yep. That's what the LDS Church teaches, too. On my mission, I typically taught that in the first discussion.
@@towardcivicliteracy Except you teaching that on your mission is the church teaching. It coaxes people into a false belief that they came to conclusions on their own, or with the help of the spirit. It's a form of brainwashing. Sharing so called testimonies using words like "know" instead of "believe" is disingenuous. It is actually just a belief, not knowledge. The "spirit" is just a warm fuzzy feeling caused by neurotransmitters and you get that with a lot of things. I got that when I first realized the church wasn't actually true. I got it realizing truths in other spiritual practices like Buddhism. I got them in recovery meetings that weren't discussing spirituality. I got them when a born again Christian lady next to mee on the plane prayed for my LDS dad who has cancer. A still small voice is just our subconscious and all people have it. Mormons (sorry, that's now an offensive nickname or slur because Prezzy Nelson doesn't like it), I mean LDS members, are not special.

The fruits of the spirit are: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, kindness and faith. Are all those "just feelings"? Actually, no. Obviously not. And we don't claim it's "just feelings." That's a common criticism that's purely rhetorical, and utterly senseless. In fact, factually so:
In terms of population-level statistics, LDS people are unusual. That has been well-known for years by social scientists, and there are plenty of examples that are measurable reflections of gifts of the Spirit.

I want to talk to my parents about all of this but I know that they would just slap the "I don't pretend to understand gods plan" sticker on the conversation
Ask them, "If you don't understand God's plan then, and this sounds weird to you, then why are you choosing to believe it?" It's ironic how members think they know God's plan when they want to preach to you and tell you that you are living life wrong, but then when they don't have an answer, instead of admitting the church might be wrong all of a sudden they don't understand God's plan.
Nelson for sure has a complex about not seeing Jesus. My brother told me how on his mission Nelson EXPLODED with anger at a missionary that innocently asked if he'd seen the Savior. I've heard similar stories since then as well.

It feels weird to reccomend something that is technically 'religious' but you guys should really try manischewitz! Seriously, jewish religious wine it the best, especially Blackberry! Just tastes like juice and it's just great. Despite leaving the church and being an athiest, my partner is culturally jewish and last weekend was passover seder and it is my favorite holiday. The family tradition is tequila shots during the seder and you also drink 3 glasses of wine!
It's weird still to participate in a 'religious ceremony' when you know all of the people you are with don't believe in God at all and all it is about is eating great food and getting drunk together.

When I told my bishop i was out I explained why and he asked where I got the information from and i said "LDS.org gospel topics essays" and he had nothing to say about it.

I think the thing that bothered me most about this talk is that it goes against what Christ taught when he preached if you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can move a mountain. Are members supposed to take the words of a "modern-day prophet" over the Saviors? The only purpose for this talk was to further shame those who doubt.

So true. The irony of the Mormon church is that it fosters a desire for truth in its members despite that it’s a total farce and it’s usually the brave, hard working, truth seekers who end up leaving. We are the “monsters” of their creation in a sort!
I'm probably one of a small handful that are actually "Lazy Learners" haha my ADD prevented me from paying attention during Sunday School because I was more concerned about what to do after church so I unintentionally avoided indoctrination and was able to leave the church at 17 with absolutely no faith crisis because I had no faith to begin with. Probably the only time one can say "Thank Goodness for learning disabilities" xD

I think old Rusty and his minions of TBMs miss what I think is the most important issue dealing with Mormonism:
"If the LDS church is actually true, then learning about it, whether lazy or "high intensity", should bring anyone and everyone to the knowledge that it is true."
The church has been its own worst enemy by hiding "non-faith building" historical truths for so long. In the end, anyone who is intellectually honest after really digging into church doctrine and history have no choice but to leave it because it can't be true. Take it one step further and you end up being an atheist.

It seems like the assumption that it is just that the "other side" hasn't gotten all the facts is just that--an assumption. For both "sides."
And then in conference there was a talk about miracles where we were told that everything is a miracle if we just look at it that way. Even in the smallest thing

I would say that messages about how to recognize and deal with narcissism have made me way happier than the "gospel of Jesus Christ."
(“Wars and rumors of wars” is one of my favorite ExMoIsms) Honestly, so many of us saw a million reasons to leave, and we were looking desperately for a reason to stay.
This is SO true! There was so much about the culture that I didn't like. I told my husband that if we didn't leave Utah I would probably go inactive (he grew up in Utah I grew up in Michigan- the members in my ward were great people.) My husband was already out of the church. So when I finally couldn't take it anymore I said "I think I'm done" I decided to read the CES letter. I was hoping that whatever I found out would cause me to get defensive for the church and drive me back to it so that I'd want to keep holding tight to that Iron Rod. I wanted to believe. But after you hate the culture and then find out it's all a lie, it feels SO FREEING to not have to put up with all that BS anymore. There's no going back and now I don't have to feel guilty for leaving.

I'm interested your view of faith, Tanner. I've really had an aversion to the word "spirituality" ever since I left Mormonism. It really bothers me when people try to say they hope I'm still a spiritual person, because life isn't complete without some form of spirituality.
Your description of your view of faith is the only thing I've heard so far that didn't make me want to crawl out of my skin. It has merit.

Wonderful insight Sam and Tanner. Thanks for sharing. Russ is completely out of touch with what happens when someone choses to separate themselves from the church. Russ's ad hominem attach on people who leave the church shows his true colors.
Then shame and guilt of feeling lazy compared to President Nelson was very effective in getting me to over commit. My mantra was everything is possible! RM Nelson did it with 10 kids, med school, skiing and a world leader calling. Anything less impressive was met with self shame and ridicule. I still struggle with feeling not good enough and still feel that if I were just a harder worker I would have made it at church. My brain still tries to reason in this way because the life I do have that I worked hard for really did make me happy. It’s hard to reason with this mentality. Who knows if he is attempting to be this impressive for god or for others. For me I felt a lot of pressure to be impressive for the church members sake and didn’t give myself enough boundaries to do things for the right reasons. I came from an abusive childhood and I think this is the addictive behavior that resulted. The desire to people please. I felt a lot of members were struggling with the addiction to people please which is codependency which is a trauma response.

Funny you mention it. My mom died a few years ago (when I was 20) and that was when I stopped trying to believe in the mormons. Because I was taught god would heal anything but it never healed my disability and then it never healed my mom. So I stopped pushing so hard to try to believe

Having faith didn’t heal my father’s cancer either, or my mothers diabetes and depression. I left the church’s about 6 years ago, before the marriage equality debate happened in Australia, and I greatly prefer my life now
