S09E05 The Cartridge Family
"The Cartridge Family" is the fifth episode of The Simpsons' ninth season. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on November 2, 1997. It was written by John Swartzwelder and directed by Pete Michels. In the episode, Homer purchases a gun to protect his family, of which Marge disapproves. Homer begins to show extremely careless gun usage causing Marge to leave him when she catches Bart using the gun without their permission. The episode was intended to show guns in a neutral way, and faced some problems with the censors because of the subject matter.
The title of this episode is a play on the name of 1970s television series The Partridge Family. The end music is the theme to the 1960s series The Avengers, and the song playing when Homer is sitting and watching things go by while he is waiting five days for his gun is "The Waiting" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Petty rarely let his music be used on television, but, being a fan of The Simpsons, he allowed them to use it.
Mexico and Portugal would actually play each other to a 2-2 draw in the group stage of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Both teams advanced to the knockout stage, and would later face off against each other in the third-place match, where Portugal would defeat Mexico 2-1 to finish the tournament in third place. It was the third highest-rated show on the Fox network, following The X-Files and King of the Hill.
The episode received several positive reviews, being included in the Herald Sun's list of the top twenty The Simpsons episodes. It was also named the fifth best episode in the show's history in an article by The Florida Times-Union. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also praised the episode, calling The Simpsons "the only sitcom in memory to treat gun control with any fairness".
On the other hand, the episode has been criticized by several outlets. The staff received several complaints from the NRA about the portrayal of the organization in the episode, despite the fact that the Springfield NRA revokes Homer's membership for his irresponsible behavior. Ian Jones and Steve Williams criticized the episode, calling it "a messy, unfocused lampooning of gun culture". Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood, the authors of the book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide, found that it was "one of the most politically unambiguous episodes ever", but that "is very dull and the plot isn't sustainable". Anna Leszkiewicz in the New Statesman later pinpointed it as the moment Marge should have left Homer, saying "Homer has proved himself to be a violent, unstable, controlling, reckless husband".
The episode was not initially aired on the United Kingdom satellite channel Sky1 due to scenes of flagrant gun misuse, yet was aired several times on BBC Two in an earlier evening timeslot. The episode has since been aired in daytime slots on all channels, albeit with partial editing. The episode was also included on the Too Hot for TV VHS and DVD, along with "Treehouse of Horror IX", "Natural Born Kissers", and "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy".
The episode closes with music from The Avengers. After the music had been recorded, Scully felt that it did not suit the ending and so wished to change it to something else. However, it was too late in production to get the full orchestra back to do a recording, and union rules meant that previous recordings could not be reused.
A riot breaks out in Springfield after a boring soccer match between Mexico and Portugal. Fearing for her family's safety, Marge tells Homer to buy a Home Security System, but after learning it would cost $500, he buys a handgun instead. After a five-day waiting period per the Brady Act, Homer shows his firearm to Marge, who is horrified and demands he get rid of it. Homer brings her to a local National Rifle Association meeting hoping to change her mind, but she remains unconvinced.
After a near accident at the dinner table, Marge begs Homer to get rid of the gun. He promises to, but later, Bart and Milhouse find it in the refrigerator's vegetable crisper. Marge discovers this and berates Homer, then leaves with the children and checks into a motel. That night, Homer hosts an NRA meeting at his house, but the other members kick him out of the association after seeing how recklessly he uses his pistol. Realizing what his behavior has cost him, Homer goes to the motel and tells Marge he got rid of the gun.
While leaving, Snake arrives to rob the desk clerk. Homer pulls out his gun and Marge is angry he lied again, but as he tries to apologize, Snake snatches the gun. The other NRA members arrive and foil Snake, who escapes. Homer then says he does not trust himself and asks Marge to throw the gun away herself. However, Marge sees a reflection of herself holding it in the trash can and decides to keep it. 1pp2p30eccmcv3443 - Krátké a kreslené filmy

“That would’ve made a lot more sense”
It really would lol
Of course to make it true, you have to ignore the Simpson's DNA part in that episode
@@frankmiranda707 Homer's accidental fingerprints would be a pretty good explanation.
God that's good.
It's like the writers put that in as a jab for the one who, no pun intended, pulled the trigger on it being Maggie of all people who shot Mr. Burns. Some salt behind that line, lmao.

Ironically, I think 'This is the thing you point at whatever you want to die' is a good way to describe it, because that's one of gun safety rules is never point it at something you don't intend to destroy.
Ok
He points it at marge! lol!
So you want a zombie tip come to your house? You need a gun.
It shows Homer actually remembers the gun safety rule but totally misses the point lol
But there could be situations where you point the gun at someone that you suspect could be dangerous, but you don't intend to kill him unless you have to.

Also back when people that didn't know how to use contractions couldn't afford a fucking keyboard.
The brilliance of the writing back then is how they took a controversial issue like the 2nd amendment and poked fun at it from every angle. No agenda, just comedy.

I like that this episode insinuates a healthy chunk of Springfield is packing serious heat at all times. When I see them in later episodes I just assumed they all have concealed carry.
No different than your neighbors. There’s a good amount of them probably owning at least a gun. It’s just that most people don’t use guns for personal protection and probably take it out target shooting every once in a while. Rarely the gun topic talks about your normal citizen. Most people who buy guns probably end up never shooting it more than a couple of times they remember having one.

Homer breaking all four basic rules of firearm safety at the same time.
Also, since when did revolvers have safeties?
the writers of the show are incompetent and don't know how they work, but i'd like to believe the whole point of that scene was to joke about a revolvers lack of safety
@@damg5080 Would be more a criticism of shooters in general, not the pistol itself. If you're that hyperfocused, it's a good idea to reestablish what the scene was trying to convey and the message behind the episode in order to avoid getting a narrow view on the subject. Was it that revolvers in general are dangerous, or that ignorant people tend to love guns, and not know how they work, hence becoming a safety issue to everyone around them. Hence, the NRA. You know, the good ol' patriotic folks who supported disarming Civil Rights groups who were being murdered by cops in the 60's. Funny how that works, you know, saying you are against tyranny and then going to kill minorities in their own beds. It'd be odd if that were a problem happening to this day.
Like, the writers don't nail everything and I disagree with their message, but you're assuming that there even was a safety despite Homer not engaging it. It's losing the point because of a failure to further reexamine the material. Instead of seeing the political and societal commentary and addressing it, you ascribe it to 'this particular gun type bad' which is, by any account, not what the episode was saying.
Like, mate, when you read 'bloodbath and beyond', did you think it was a joke about how some stores have quirky names, or was it a critique about gun stores in general and how they stand to profit off of fear and violence?

Well intimidated her really
Rob Smith he still made the point that guns are used by the citizenry to protect themselves from an oppressive and tyrannical government. Another point could be made on the right to self preservation and another on the fact that guns are used far more often to prevent crimes than they are to commit them according to the CDC
Ryan Smith, but that’s not true. If you think that Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell (or Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi if that fits you better) are orchestrating an end to democracy and tyrannical takeover, you don’t get to go shoot them. If it were that loose of an understanding, people would be trying it non-stop for every president. If the police come to your home and try to do something you view as extra-Constitutional, and your remedy is to shoot your way out of it, you’re definitely going to die. There’s really no scenario where private gun ownership provides a protection to the free state from threats that are within. The Constitution and the separation of powers (and the responsibility on those branches to zealously protect their power and remain independent regardless of party affiliation) is what is supposed to protect against internal threats.
Armed revolt in 1783, maybe could be interpreted as the meaning of protecting the free state line, but given that it was framed as being part of a regulated militia (the alternative to a standing military in those days), the far more reasonable conclusion is that the protection of the free state was meant as a protection from foreign threats. It’s a notion as obsolete as muskets.
Also, Homer’s comments were meant to be farcical on a number of levels. There is no king of England. If there was, he wouldn’t be going around to random homes in other countries pushing people around. And if he did, it would best be handled by the government and State Department, not some rando with a gun.
MP197742 You’re right. You don’t shoot someone if you suspect them of trying to take over the state and then the American public. And you don’t shoot the police because you view it as “extra-Constitutional”, whatever that means. And that’s not the point I’m making. The purpose of an armed citizenry is to protect itself in the event of government abusing its power over them. There’s no conspiracy that the government is going to bust down people’s doors and overrun US citizens tomorrow, but people should have the freedom to own firearms to protect themselves when governments no longer look out for the people’s interests above their own. The 2nd amendment isn’t for external threats to be solved by the government and it doesn’t only apply to muskets (Which, if it did, the founding fathers would likely make more specific than ‘arms’ in the Constitution). It’s to prevent what has happened to every socialist state in history by first disarming their citizens and then trampling over them with no means for defense
@@MP197742 The point isn't to "shoot your way out of it" ie shoot your way out of your front door. The point is the mercenary at your front door has these possible realities: Reality A is there is no possibility of a gun firing at him/her when they break down that door; Reality 2nd is there IS a possibility of a gun firing at him/her when they break down that door. Now within which reality is the mercenary more likely to break down your door?
One thing both sides of the debate can agree on: dangerous idiots like Homer Simpson shouldn’t own guns.
