    Another comment:
    I wanted to thank you for this video because it spurred me to some solutions for real world issues.
    First, I have a laptop that has only 32GB of EMMC storage. It runs Windows 11 but even after some space saving tricks, I only have about 5GB of free space. But your video gave me an idea: I created a bootable SSD with Windows 11 on it, and now I boot that laptop from that SSD. So I now suddenly have 1TB storage space and it runs great! As a test I did the same thing with a 512GB Micro SD card just to see if it could be done because that system is capable of booting from a Micro SD card. That also works. It's not a speed demon, but it does work surprisingly well. There are some issues related to pagefile usage, so I suggest using a HDD or SSD. Basically anything seen as removable media and not as a fixed disk drive will have these issues. The PNY Pro Elite USB 3.2 Gen 2 flash drive works very well. First, it is FAST, and it is seen just like a full SSD including support for TRIM.
    Then I had another idea: My roommate keeps a Mini PC out by the TV. That way, if we ever need to lookup something on the web based upon something we were watching on TV we can do it right then and there. But it always annoys me that I don't have all my settings in place. For example, I like dark mode, he likes light. I use Edge, he uses Chrome, etc. Now I can simply boot from the Windows To Go SSD and I have my fully customized Windows and I don't mess with anything in his installation.
    You can even apply BitLocker with a password to unlock the drive so your data is safe if you lose the drive.
    It's been a few years since I experimented with Windows To Go, but watching your video suddenly made me realize how useful this is.
    Thanks for this, as well as all your other videos. They are always well thought out and very much appreciated!

    You don't need Virtual Box or Windows PE to do this. You can just boot to the Command Prompt in Windows 10 or 11 on the master PC to do this and capture the image to your C Drive and then copy it over to your Windows install USB. I do it this way all the time.

    Are people that clueless? You can just make (for example) make a folder Inside the Windows install stick and put whatever .exe files (or whatever actually) and have them ready after windows is done installing.
    And before anyone comments, I'm adressing the people who just want to install some stuff and not automate the entire installation process.
    Edit: Why download the ISO from Rufus? You probably should download it from MS directly. Not to say that Rufus is untrusted of course, but the general rule of thumb usually is to download files from the Original source.

      One you get the flash drive complete as in this video
      open NTLITE > ADD > IMAGE DIRECTORY > (SELECT YOUR FLASH DRIVE) > CLICK "SELECT FOLDER" BUTTON > (your drive letter will appear at the bottom) > RIGHT CLICK YOUR DRIVE IN THE LIST > click "CREATE ISO" > type in a name, and choose where to save it > click "SAVE"
      Once it's done, you have an iso you can use to create a virtual drive to test it,

    Could I do the debloating and other general system settings adjustments and install drivers during audit mode as well? Followed by the same imaging steps as shown here, and installing the resulting install, would that work to end up with a fresh install that's ready to go? (of course, provided I install it to the exact hardware for which I installed the drivers in audit mode).

    • @hannessehestedt4931
      @hannessehestedt4931 Před 26 dny

      Technically, you could add any drivers while in Audit mode, but since you are on a VM, the drivers for your system won't be appropriate for that VM. However, you can inject all your drivers after you have moved the install.wim to your Windows image. In fact, I do this all the time. That way, not only are my apps already installed, the drivers are also all there already. Note that to do this, you need to leave the install.wim as is and don't convert it to install.esd since the procedure only works with a .wim file, not a .esd file. The procedure is a bit long but I can provide it to you if desired. As you noted, if you use your actual hardware to create this image rather than a VM, then you can do this. Again, there are some extra steps involved to make this work because sysprep normally uninstalls the drivers. It does not delete them, but it does uninstall them.

    In your video you mentioned that you can debloat the Windows installation. BE CAREFUL doing this! You cannot delete or add items to the start menu, you cannot uninstall OR install any Microsoft Store apps, and you should not launch any of the programs that you are installing while you are still in audit mode. Note that some installers will ask if the program should be run after installation. Do not choose to do this!
    Doing any of these things will cause difficulties. There are ways to perform the debloat, but that is way beyond the scope of this video.
    At least three times that I counted you referenced double quote marks as "parenthesis". Be careful and follow what is being typed on the screen and not the narration.

      You have a lot of vids about it, but you shouldn’t do that, bc of one thing : you need time, a lot of time.
      First, you’ll need to have Windows ADK with the PE addon installed, so at least 4-5 GB of disk space necessary.
      After, you will need to know how to use the DISM commands and its cmdlets
      Last but not least, you’ll have to do a lot of tests and have all you apps prepared to be “installed”

This requires maintenance but you could go with community software but those doesn't have all and not controlled by you. hybrid would be perfect but conflict would cause issues in the feature. I have to disagree with Google Chrome being a better browser than Edge. Edge has improved so much in the last few years, to the point where it is faster and more secure than Google Chrome for the most part. At a corporate level, we have cybersecurity tools that monitor vulnerabilities for all installed software on linux, macOS and Windows, and usually when it comes to Chrome, Firefox, and Edge...Edge tends to reveal less vulnerabilities than Chrome. In fact, to the point where I ask most users to NOT install Chrome.

    Why would you do this? You're creating an image which will have old software in no-time and you will need to make a new images over and over. And honestly the whole procedure is a pain in the ass. Just use some PXE boot server, and you can still customize a couple of things or make some image or use the standard ISO whatever but just use a tool or script to automaticly install the applications afterwards, it allows you too always have the latest release. But honestly i don't think any home user wants this. Most home users would love something like Windows Home Server offered the old days. It automaticly made a complete image based backup of your system to the server without you even knowing and if your OS got garbled in any way. You just put a CD/USB stick in and told it to restore everything and you got a working system within 30 minutes with all your apps and all your data. Can't beat that.

    • @LupusYonderboy
      @LupusYonderboy Před měsícem +6

      True, this process is pretty involved, but setting up and provisioning a PXE server isn't any less involved, let alone provisioning it, depending on what you wanna use it for. This step-by-step guide, as involved as it looks, is easy to follow, regardless of how much time it consumes. Also, simply updating the pre-installed software will more than likely take less time than freshly installing the latest versions each time. Why would any home user wanna do this? Maybe because they simply wanna try it, maybe to learn more about the subject matter, maybe out of sheer boredom. But not everyone is just a home user. This can be useful for advanced user and professionals at any level. Why would a professional not go about this in a more professional way? Maybe because they lack the means to do so. It's good to know that anyone can try this out for any reason and learn if it's useful for them, which is why it's great to have such a useful video to refer to.

      @@LupusYonderboy Trust me i have imaged a fair share of systems in my time using microsoft, i think it's now part of Windows Deployment Server but it was called RIS. I believe we installed a laptop, then run sysprep and another script, you could immediately upload it to the server and use it, until you got completely other hardware then you needed to make a new image. Worked fine at the time. But later came management software and better ways to roll out and keep everything current. I don't think many companies are using the old ways. It just doesn't make sense.

    • @malodevic8895
      @malodevic8895 Před měsícem +2

      For me, it’s more practical to deploy a Windows ISO than deploying a WDS server and creating my WIM image : It’s less steps, so less risks of failure
      In my enterprise, we use WAPT to deploy OS and apps : It’s like the “APT” system, but it’s on Windows, and you can deploy both Windows and Linux. The only con on it is that you now need a license to use it (and it’s pretty expensive if I recall)
