1971 Mustang Mach 1: Tools for Cleaning Parts

  • These are the tools I use to de-sprue, remove sprue attachment points, and sand away mold separation lines on my model cars. This is the first construction step that I use in my model making process. The overall first step is to read the kit instructions and verify that all parts are present and haven't been damaged.

    I listened to this rant, and I never had a problem.
    Repeat after me people - My model is not wrought iron patio furniture.

      How many times did we joke about these things on SMCG?
      1. Appealing to one’s own authority: “I’ve been modeling for 50 years…”
      2. “We should be grateful for whatever crap the manufacturers shovel our way”
      3. “Never had a problem”
      4. “You can’t use different brands of paint on the same model.”
      5. “You can’t use different types of paint on the same model”
      6. “Panel line shading is unrealistic.”
      7. “Your model is overweathered…no crew chief would ever…”
      8. “Your [sic] not a modler [etiam sic], your [adhuc etiam sic] just an assembler.”

    Great video Frank, we can never have enough tools! Regarding the chat later in the video, I hear you...for a lot of people there is that sense of maybe stepping out of their comfort zone to begin with in posting builds and projects and even more so when something goes wrong right. I grew up using automotive paint and touch up guns, I was very fortunate in learning from my pops who did auto body. Any information I am able to give and assist with I do so, while I have not used a lot of the materials, I hear people having issues with, a lot of what makes a great paint job is kind of what you were talking about, prep, cleaning, washing parts/body and your hands. Oils from the hands can cause fish eyes and odd spots in the paint. Prior to paint I normally wipe my body/hood etc with some rubbing alcohol, been doing that for years and seems to work great. Great video, keep up the great work and love your builds, you are an outstanding builder!

    You are spot-on with your comments and observations. I have been in 2 different hobby clubs ( plastic scale modeling twice, and RC flying once) on 3 separate time periods, ( average of about 3-5 years each time ) and my observations agree with you exactly. I have seen hobby “members” who regularly come to meetings who have 1. Never shown ( or shared ) one of their models, 2. Never been seen carrying, building flying or painting a model…..of any kind,…….at any time. 3 who regularly “pipe up” and critique any model that is shared for show-&-tell. I chalk this up to the Hobby Demographic percentages of Human Nature. My observations are that only about 10-15 %of “Hobbyists” ACTUALLY BUILD MODELS…. The other 85-90% of the members JUST WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED….( get out of the house or away from the wife ) once a month. It’s like people who belong to a Country Club…. Who don’t golf………What they really want, is to WATCH OTHER GOLFERS….then later, sit around and socialize with golfers and TALK about golfing. I have seen members on an RC Flying Club who do the same thing, they don’t even appear to own or even touch an RC plane, ( they have never been seen at the flying field with a plane or a Transmitter for that matter ) no one in the club has ever seen them fly…..anything……But the show up at the field 3 or 4 days a week - to sit around and TALK about flying - in fact while YOU are flying……they have to come up and stand as close to you as possible ….and incessantly yap at you while you are trying to enjoy your flight…and relax….. then they will follow you around the rest of the time that you are at the field….yakking at you all the while. Then after that they finally leave, they go to the hobby shop, and buy an RC MAGAZINE to look at pictures of OTHER PEOPLE flying….. with absolutely no intention ever to actually buy their OWN RC plane……..or ever learning how to fly themselves. They are what I call the Hobby “Cling-Ons” ( Star Trek reference there ) the Scale plastic modeling hobby is FULL of the same type of people. I think you had referred to them an “Neck-Beards” ( LOL ) what is scary is that on many occasions these people actually end up as JUDGES at modeling contests ( since they never bring models to any competition or even to sho to their club ) because they don’t really want to build their own models and show them - they want to sit around and TALK to people who actually BUILD and PAINT models. So that’s the main reason that I gave up on hobby clubs - and “forums” - and turned to You Tube for great content like you produce. I am still learning a lot, keep up the great work. And don’t let the “Cling-Ons” ( Neck Beards ) get to you - just tune them out… just stay in the 10%-15% who ACTUALLY BUILD & PAINT- keep it up 👍😄👌😎

      @@bradwolfgang1037 that was awesome Brad, and incredibly accurate. I also used to fly RC planes (most of the videos on this channel are from 10 years ago when I was flying), and I know the type you’re talking about. There was a “safety coordinator” at one club I belonged to that only flew on rare occasions, and when he did, he was guaranteed to fly over the crowd, and come to think of it, I don’t think I ever saw him land a plane. He crashed every time he flew.

    What are instructions? Finally someone who agrees not cheap out on tools and materials. I like to save a buck where i can, like buying bulk 32 awg wire instead of the expensive hobby stuff, but on things that count like told and paint and such, you get what you pay for. I stick my old blade and put them in an old pill bottle. (The hood of being old and fat i have plenty). The needle tip scribed are better for round curves like circle gas caps, where the hook style are better for long lines like door panels. Ha get you on a tsa list. Looks like a prison shiv. Great informative video. You are absolutely right.
    I have never seen so much really bad information spread with so much authority than when i started frequenting Facebook groups. I too started checking people's profiles to let people's work (or lack there of) speak for them. Also when i tried to give actual advice (especially if that advice involved doing actual work, or using a more expensive product) i got shouted down and called things like an elitist. So i just quit helping on groups.

    More great tips and advice Frank! 👍 I’ve heard the difference between the $$ Tamiya scriber and the $$$ Tamiya scriber is that the $$$ one if flat bottom “U” shaped while the other one is “V” shaped. I have both, but still use the back side of my #11 🤷‍♂️

    Great video Frank. Your rant is spot on and constructive. Hopefully you make people think. I disagree about your comment about your models however. They look good to me and I've been a contest judge for years. Wish I could meet you in person at the NNL East show, but I have another obligation that weekend. Model on!

      Thanks Bill…if my models were just subassemblies, I’d be pretty good. I usually screw up during final assembly because that’s when I start rushing because I’m a doof who wants to get to the next project.
      And for some reason, my stuff photographs a LOT better than it looks in person.

    I feel ya on tool collection. I did finally get a mr. Hobby panel scribe. It was a thin handle that’s very easy to use over Tamiya’s large handle one. I haven’t gouged outside the line yet. I hear ya on the groups. I made it a point to cut way down on my group participation due to the negativity. I always try to pass on any and all techniques I’ve learned. That was the main reason I started my own channel. I do some reviews, and do some technical videos. I think we all have an obligation to help out our fellow man in any all things we do. But I agree. It can get very irritating to have to wade thru the childish behavior. The problem is, today people only interact online, not in person. 99% of the negativity I see online wouldn’t happen if the 2 party’s were face to face. A lot of issues have been resolved face to face.

    Excellent video... And I feel the same way about the forums...and for that matter some youtube channels and lives.... I enjoyed watching your tools you use and some I just may add to my tool world.... For cleaning I like using soft scrub cause it cleans and sands at the same time and I never get fish eyes... The big cans are a gamble everytime... Its best to test on sprue first and even then years down the line things can go wrong I know cause I have models years after with reactions... Live and learn... And yeah I'm out here watching you lol 😂

    • @FranksModelWorks
      @FranksModelWorks  Před 2 měsíci

      Soft Scrub sounds like a good idea…give it some tooth before primer.
      I’ve said before…I don’t judge people for the methods they use…it’s possible to make any kind of paint look good (if you’re willing to experiment and try over and over again until it works) but I DO judge people for what they PREACH especially if it isn’t followed up with a reasoned argument and a demonstration with results. There definitely a lot of THAT on CZcams, and TONS of it on social media and forums.

  • @Joethemodelbuilder

    Spot on rant Frank. When I started my channel I was prepared for the armchair modelers with useless and negative comments. I've run into those people in the past on forums for both cars and model railroading. I actually address this same issue in one of my first videos. I was taken back by how professional and respectful this CZcams group is.

    • @FranksModelWorks
      @FranksModelWorks  Před 2 měsíci +2

      The types that I’m talking about prefer the post/comment format because it’s quick to consume, render a poorly informed judgement, rinse and repeat five or six times, then wallow in self satisfaction. Watching a video takes up too much of their valuable time…after all, they have their own grown children to insult, parents to shove in the shittiest nursing home in their area, and neighbors to rat out to the HOA. That’s tough to do if they’re sitting through 4 or 5 CZcams videos a day. Some DO make the effort though. Thankfully I’ve yet to encounter many.
