I’ve been studying Portuguese for 9 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse and I have to translate everything into English to understand. I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and we’ve been practicing for 6 years now but I still can’t understand her. It’s very frustrating. Portuguese words don’t mean anything to me until I translate them into English.

Hi i'm brazilian, usualy a lot of us don't learn spanish, but we know some words and we can actually understand spanish pretty well even without studying it since it sounds kind of similar to portuguese, usualy when we talk to someone who speaks spanish we end up with a mix of both that we call "portunhol". As for if we have a lot of spanish speaking tourists, we do, but they go mostly to the most famous states here like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, like most tourists do, but you do see more people who speak spanish in other less famous states then oher tourists from different countries outside of Latin America.

Não desista, até nós que somos brasileiros as vezes não entendemos alguns pronunciados, isso pq varia de cultura para cultura, pessoal do norte e nordeste tem umas gírias que a região do sul, por exemplo, não entendem, e assim sucessivamente.

You can say "Bom dia" aswell, although bom dia is used most of the time to say good morning, the word dia can also mean day as a whole, so saying bom dia would be appropriate for this scenario
