  • At Drivenmad, we repair, maintain and upgrade vehicles in our workshop, here in the sunny Algarve, Portugal.
Having hundreds of kilometres of dirt roads, dirt tracks and various hills with ruts on our doorstep, we venture out and test our 4x4’s to the limit (our limit, not theirs  )
When we can get one, we will slip in a vehicle review, along with some product testing - who does not want to know which tyre stops the best ?
So subscribe and join our journey as we modify, test and improve our cars in as many ways as possible.

@@DrivenMadShow Haha, Well the only (hilarious) tip so far, is when trying to free one of the nuts from the downpipe off the turbo with a butane torch, be careful not to set the firewall actually on fire 😂😂😂. Worst part was, it didn't even free the nut 🤦. Not sure what your budget is, but it would be great to see the old girl have a HF turbo upgrade and 3" exhaust kit install vid? As always I would follow along taking notes 😉

@@stefanobio7045 changed the wishbone bushings (did not bother filming as they were fine - as suspected - had new, so did it anyway) knock persisted - so every joint, bushing etc now changed ( have to say, the 555 stuff we have fitted is top top quality, compared to what was on). Our pet mechanic is 90% sure it is the CV joint (drivers side (LHD)) but recommended changing both - we are going to take them out for an inspection, other than the steering rack, we have changed everything else :( - the steering is smooth, no notches, or grinding when in the air (no steering fluid loss) - the knock does happen when turning (driven), but also in a straight line when braking (no steering input) thats its worst knock, so this allegedly points at CV rather than steering rack - clearly I have no clue ! for good measure we will also change hub bearings - would proper miff me off if we put it all back and it's one of them (sure it is not, but in for a penny, in for a pound ! and Nath does not want me chucking my toys out the pram; there is a distinct possibility of that, I have already threatened a Faulty Towers thrashing of it) Bosco will be an almost brand new truck once this lots done 🙈

      @@DrivenMadShow Hi Jon,
If the "knocking" noise is prominent when rotating the wheel then yes it could be the CV joints, personally I would remove the complete drive shaft assembly and examine both the inner and outer cv's, then replace if there is any wear detected.
I'm presuming that the rubber boots are not damaged in any way where water, dirt etc can enter and cause damage, when you conducted your visual examination could you see any grease emanating from the CV rubber boots?
If there is knocking when the brakes are applied that is because the brake discs are warped / distorted.
Have both the discs been checked for run out and minimum thickness?
It's unlikely to be the wheel bearings as they would cause vibration and noise constantly through the steering wheel?
To check the wheel bearings place the vehicle on your ramp and rotate each wheel, they should rotate smoothly without any noise etc, hold the wheel at the 12 and 6 O'clock position and attempt to move the wheel, there should be no movement detectable, which would indicate a worn wheel bearing?
      Good luck with the work.
      Best regards,
      Stefano

Oooh tired and worn out ball joints. Reminds me of a school outing in the 70s to an outward bound centre in Aberglasyn. I was looked after by my over friendly humanities teacher, Mr Crane, big bugger, bright ginger hair, liked to sneak round the dormitories in the early hour's tickling the testicles of me and my friends, and if we did wake up he told us that we had dreamt everything and not to eat dairylea triangles before bedtime. Arrrhh the good old days.

Great video. not too many detailed ones on CZcams on this job. If you take a lump hammer and a few swift whacks to the outer hub portion of the ball joint socket it will pop free, easy. I wish all the bolts were as free as that, salt and shit roads kill everything here in Ireland.

Living its life in sunny Portugal helps :) we clean / wipe over with ACF50 every year - pressure wash off ( and we get tons of dust and then occasional mud) let dry then wipe over with a wrag and old paint brush - corrosive inhibiting as well !

How did you manage on the right side is there less movement on the drive shaft I managed to left side last night but seen horror story's about the right side. I am not changing the shocks on mine either so assuming that would also make it harder

    • @DrivenMadShow
      @DrivenMadShow  Před 11 měsíci

The right side was nice and straight forward, just 4 bolts holding the CV axle in. Undo them and get lots more movement in the assembly.
      Hope this helps.

Murdock is being daily driven, our most reliable vehicle :) - we have to do the timing belts soon, also changing the viscous fan (struggling to get the part - got two, both told would fit, but the core size is wrong - or Murdock has been modified, we doubt that has happened) the 2010 is a pain in the ass, you name it, it has broken !!
