- Today's terrain tutorial is all about dramatic topography! Do you want to model steep cliffs and big mountains without a big budget? Greg shows you how he made a custom 4'x4' tabletop for the Battle of Thermopylae. All of the terrain techniques used in this video are DIY methods you can apply to a wide variety of battlefields you may have in mind for your next big game.

The 10mm American Battlefield Trust will be sending you a strongly worded letter regarding your destruction of The Shiloh battlefield. As the members are all 10mm themselves, it will be difficult if not impossible to read.
The Complaints Dept has dusted off his .... erm .... their microscope and it's on standby, expecting a miniaturised influx (confetti) of 10mm mini-complaints in the mail.
I can't wait for the battle. I'm intrigued to see how it could be made an interesting scenario, as the battle historically doesn't lend itself to dynamic decision making.
No it does not lend itself to a great scenario! So true. This was a major point of emphasis in the scenario design and I think folks will be interested to see how we approached it.
Just give negative victory points for players letting predictable quotes slip and see who's losing the least at the end of the day.
Sounds like an episode of QI!@@mazikainen
Yes please to more terrain builds. Always a fan of Little Wars TV game boards. Never disappoints.
Greg, you are a master of maps and terrain.
Newsprint / papier mache is an old technique but you prove that it's still one of the best.
Just a minute in and I had to pause. I knew that a lot of the Aegean coastlines have shifted both under and above the waves, but just looking at Thermopylae and the level of coastline recession is just... wild.
Noooooo! How could you give up a Shiloh battlefield???
💀
Excellent work! The Triple Thick tip is a fine one that I'll be trying very soon. Thanks for that!
Soooo much easier than resin!
Can't wait for the next video
Oh my gosh. Cant believe yall are doing this battle. I cant wait. Watching the old 300 Spartans movie as a child, not the new remake, is what got me interested in ancients warfare.
“Spartans! Prepare for glory!”

Technical note: XPS (pink insulation or equivalent) is extruded polystyrene. EPS (white styrofoam or equivalent, the kind with small balls of foam) is expanded polystyrene. Unless you're using EPVC (extruded PVC, which is much harder than either of the polystyrene products) or some injectable foaming product, it's extremely likely that any foam you use is going to be polystyrene. The foam board you show at 1:34 is definitely polystyrene.
Greg. Just wonderful. Thank you
Nice tutorial. I think noting the reuse of old boards is a great point.
Recycling at its best! Every custom table eventually runs its course
This video is immensly helpful for when i get around to making my 1980's Frankfurt USAF Air Base board for my cold war wargame! Your board looks great!
The table is looking excellent.
Bat sh8t bonkers brilliant 😂 looks brilliant. Looking forward to this one. Obviosly over hundreds of years the terrain changes and its great to have a better understanding of the terrain at the time.
Great tutorial with some really great hints. Thanks, Greg. Now I'm inspired to build some new terrain tables!
You all do awesome work !!
Fantastic thank you for teaching me something cool. Loved the video
That’s very cool. Thanks for the tip.
Excellent!
The cool part of this table is you guys can use it for modules from Ancient Greece to WW2.
Well done buddy.
Ooh! Triple Thick! I have a moat to do and that looks perfect.
So cool 👍
Nice looking battlefield, you guys ever try any model railroading layouts.
Funnily enough, i was looking at some ACW terrain last weekend and I did ran into images of your shiloh table.
At least I think it was it.
Awesome looking table. But Thermopylae does look impressive.
Looking forward to the battle.
Great board!! I work in construction so I can get all the insulation I need, but where in the world can you find a newspaper nowadays? 😂
Bro before i saw this video i saw the movie "Meet the Spartans", now im remembering all the funny moments😂😂😂, but im anxious for the battle
Showing us the magic.
it would be great if you did another big campain like you did with pyric wars ❤
Girls: "I love arts and crafts! Show me yours!"
Me:
Nice
TFW you get carried away making impassible terrain. It looks great, but reminds me of all the other historical battles I want to game that are difficult to adapt as scenarios because they aren’t simply 2 formations facing each other on a flat empty plain. Sometimes it’s hard to identify some command decisions that will fit on the table, to avoid just being a diorama in motion. Often the most obvious decisions that could change the course of battle involve being somewhere completely different.
Agreed…this is one of those famous battles that’s hard to wargame. Limited maneuver options and limited choices for each side. But damn it’s a cool looking battlefield!
God, I wish that you were my neighbor.
Yea, you’d be able to scoop up lots of scrap insulation for your house at the curb on trash day!!
What was that paper? News paper? What's that? Was it under the corded rotary phone?
Some of us still read the newspaper! A dying breed, I know…
Time to flip some of those shelves upside down, they're getting pretty bowed.
I would like to see the triple thick closer up . looking to do water stuff and I don't want to mess around with resin
I'm confused, where are the hot gates? All I see is a fantastic tabletop wargame battlefield 😁
Thank you. Off topic Lucille looks a lovely Hound, which type? I ask as the owner of a Beagle Harrier Cross.
Beagle-Tree Walking Coonhound
Thank you for taking the time to reply, lovely looking dog,I had not heard of the tree walking breed before, living in England as I do.
wow
Mmm when does a tabletop wargame becomes down to a board game with 2mm counters😮
Help me please. I just decided I wanted to do something like this. I want to re create the battle of edington. I don't want to play a game but just make a model battlefield with the figurines for a decorative piece in my house. How do I decide between 10, 15, or 28mm miniatures for the battlefield? I want to make a 3x6 or 4x6 replica. This is my first time doing this and very new to everything so it is a little overwhelming
SPARTAAAAAAAAAA
Wait, credit unions draw more car loans? What? Since when?
ANNNNND you will have a very very hard time storing it.
One day we will have to show everyone how we store our gaming boards!
