The early 2000s were a period of dramatic social transformation. During the 2008 election Obama vocally opposed Gay Marriage for example, I bring that up not to slander him but rather to point out that was the political calculation only 16 years ago, it was too controversial for a democratic president to remotely entertain.

There’s even a little bit more to this awesome story.
Both Phelps and his coach, Bob Bowman has said many times that Phelps’ preparation for the 2012 Olympics was less than ideal. Phelps ended up losing his best event, the 200 butterfly, to South Africa’s Chad le Clos, by only five 100ths of a second, sparking their “beef”. In another event, the 400 IM, one that he also broke the world record in at the previous Olympics, he failed to even medal.
After 2012, Phelps went into retirement from swimming. Initially when he told his coach that he wanted to come back for Rio 2016, Bob said no, but Phelps was able to convince him that he was really serious about it this time, and fully dedicated to ending his career on a good note. Following his DUI in 2014, he was barred from participating in the 2015 World Championships in Kazan Russia, therefore, Phelps opted to swim at the 2015 US national championships in Texas that year. At the world championships, Chad Le Clos bragged to the media about his winning time of 50.56 in the 100 butterfly, stating that it was a time that Phelps hadn’t swam or beat in several years, therefore, Phelps should keep quiet regarding Le clos. Phelps responded by swimming a 50.45 mere hours later, what was (at the time) a textile world record. Also at that same meet, Phelps scared several world records, swimming times that WOULD have won him multiple gold medals at world championships had he been there, and he began to solidify his comeback. At Rio 2016, he earned five more gold medals, and one silver, reclaiming his 200 butterfly throne that he lost to Le Clos in 2012.

I find it hilarious how American parents forced to Phelps to be the role model of their children. He was not obligated to being a perfect citizen. Smoking weed and going to parties in Las Vegas is perfectly legal and human behaviour. If I won just 3 Olympic gold medals I would have partied way harder than Michael. Besides the DUI, he didn't do much wrong. What a legend.

The diet and nutrition aspect is really one of the most underappreciated aspects of swimming. It may be hard to imagine, but when you have to eat that much, eating itself becomes a chore and something you don't want to do. Add on to that, both Phelps and I have ADHD, and while I don't know if Phelps took medication for it, I am, and one of the side effects is appetite suppression, which makes getting enough calories even harder. And if you don't eat enough for a day, even if you're just 1,000 calories short, your body doesn't hesitate to let you know. You feel absolutely awful, your muscles cramp, and you can barely move.

the amount of focus and dedication it takes to become one of the best in the world at something is truly unique, but it also points to a unique brain & personality that most people cannot begin to empathize with. after you achieve what you've worked your entire life for, these overachievers can struggle to reconnect with a purpose in life. im glad phelps didn't hurt anyone or himself, and proud of him for recommitting his life to another purpose and starting a family.

Unfortunately, athletes do get away with more. Putting him under such scrutiny for weed was unreasonable but his DUI deserved some heat. He's still the greatest ambassador for swim and likely will be for the foreseeable future, but I think he's fundamentally a good man. But he was under perhaps one of the most insane training regimens ever and remained professional about all incidents. He will undoubtedly be remembered for his achievements, but beyond that he should be remembered for the DUI but also being the model of self-improvement and rebounding to a degree that I don't think has been achieved by other disgraced athletes.

This just shows people in a nutshell. Make Phelps higher than life so you in a way view him as more than human. He works extremely hard to accomplish something never done. And something as simple as smoking Marijuana which is beyond acceptable today. And to watch people have extremely harsh takes over something minor when deep down they've either made mistakes similar or far worse but the expectations for them are far lower.

If you think about it, from a young age he won everything most people would only dream of doing, and I think people don't realise whenever someone like him or Usain Bolt do what they've done do all the hard work to get to the top for us watching its great to watch and rewatchnd relive but for them it was their experience so sure they might feel similar feelings but they have to go into the "what's next mode" they can't really stay in one place because they weren't built like that in the first place, so for Phelps I can understand the missing practice and all that stuff because in his mind he already did what he wanted to do and then the second time around he was winning still without being the most dedicated so it probably made it worse for him because it showed him he could still win while having fun on the side. Once you create those habits you can't really stop them and once his career ended he was just stuck with his habits without the swimming side

  • @fuk4ze

you can see michael was just a kid who liked swimming, and he was damn good at it but as the time went on he changed into a different person. Swimming while important, was no longer the most important thing, and his life was no longer focused solely on swimming. His story sounds like a story of a kid who had nothing else but swimming, and thus losing on a lot of stuff on those early years. We praise the gold medals, the huge successes, but fail to realize that only pleases ourselves and not the person winning them. afterall, after you win 1 gold medal, all the gold medals are the same. Glad he found a balance in his life and i hope anyone can take something away from his story.

Marshawn Lynch has a similar resume of mistakes & the media tried to shame him around when he left Buffalo. Years later he finally gave them the finger showing that apologizing, in our culture, opens the door for the BS. Being unapologetically him meant they no longer had the rug of perfection to pull from him.
Phelps, by age 31, resume consisted of winning 28 Olympic medals (23🥇, 3 🥈 & 2 🥉), 1 DUI 🥃 & he possibly didn’t inhale 💨 like Clinton. Sounds like a high achieving American to me & that free-will results us in more good than the bad choices we like to focus on. The bandwagons full for greatness & it reveals the less forgiving when the opportunity to jump ship presents after something has gone wrong. Thank you Phelps for what you brought to the state of Maryland. We’ll take you over what most of these others states are left with as Legends

This young man has been hounded by media and his friends with whom he shared a bong (pot). This was it self akin to being stabbed in the back. Praised one day, no forgiveness for the second. And he did it again with the DUI, for that, yes, I agree; he should have been chastised. But he was a young man. Each and every parent has gone through these types of issues with their own Children but NOOOO Michael was NOT ALLOWED TO BE YOUNG. Hypocrisy rules. Shame on everyone who bashed him about.

My response to Maggie would have been "Hey! How many gold medals have you brought to the USA? 0?"
The fact that Phelps got 8 golds in 2008 and people still find a way to hate on him is just mind-blowing. It shows that all anyone cares about is money. "Smoking pot is hurting Phelps's marketability". Yeah, no shit Sherlock. But I doubt he cares about making money as much as other people do from his image. Phelps carried the pressure put on him by others and they celebrated in his victories. But when he was down, when he wanted not to have that pressure, everyone who celebrated turned against him.

I think he is the absolute legend. The way he was treated is so unfair. As I do blame him for DUI, the other stuff are pretty normal for everyone else. People forget he is a human being, he was a kid, with unimaginable pressure of the whole nation. They forgive much worse behaviour of actors, politicians, musicians, but not athletes. They are not allowed to make a mistake, they are not allowed to try to live like regular people.
The only shady thing with him was his gold over Cavic. Not sure who won that one, Omega claimed that Cavic didn't press the plate hard enough. But, nevertheless, that doesn't take away anything out of his greatness in a pool.
