- “The complete objectivity of losing to someone and not something. You beat yourself up for hours. It’s entirely your fault in a way that almost nothing else in life is. And it eats and weighs on you. Chess is a very dangerous parasite.” - Robert Hess, Grandmaster
Magnus Carlsen, the greatest chess player alive, has never before been down in a world chess championship... until he faces Sergey Karjakin, a man who is hungry to see the roles reversed.

Ruy Lopez* (I incorrectly spelled Ruy Lopez with an o)
Dude.. I am in tears, carlson closed with the best most fatherly warm speech ever..
A grown man is crying lmao agreeed
*Carlsen
Carlos Magnussen
after sulking so badly after losing a game i lost interest in carlsen.
@@standardtuning4guitars423 Then you must hate most of chess players.
The last moments hit me harder than a ton of bricks. Growing up without a dad I always wonder if I will ever be a good one. I was expecting just chess a docu but left thinking about my life. Weird. This video is a piece of art itself.
I'm sure you will man! Lost my dad when I was 13, I'm now 22 and am only now understanding everything he did for me.
Same here, lost my father when I was 14. But, god has been kind. Looking forward to be the best father I can be.
@@prateekpani9464 I'm sure you'll be great man!
My Dad passed on in 1997; I was 17.
I haven't watched this video yet but my dad passed away last year, I'm 26. Guess I'm in for a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with this chess documentary!
Fischer wasn't 13 in 1965. He was 22. He was 13 in 1956. But the gamer reference is excellent, and excellent documentary!
You’re right, I mixed the years up! I’ll edit the description with a correction, thank you for the catch.
@@FlameIsLucky No worries, work of art there!
That is the best documentary I've ever seen, the composition, the history lessons, the music and the perfect build-up to the end, touché!
eh, its alright, a lot of juxtaposition of images, not enough depth
If you liked this, I recommend the AlphaGo documentary
the classic US pronunciation of "Alekhine"... the dude's just an imposter.
Ditto
You know this is like zelda TotK music right
I could not stop myself from crying a little at the end of the video. What a sacrifice. Incredible documentary, fully engaging throughout, LOVED IT!
The love and sacrifice of a parent so that their child can be greater than them is deeply touching. That is true love in it's purest form
Nobody commenting about the Pokemon battle theme in the background always makes battles more serious and iconic
Do you know who sang that version?
I was so confused that I stopped paying attention to the video and was listening for the word "Pokemon" because I legitimately thought The Pokemon Company might have purchased the song from whoever sang it here. It sounded like it could be the original.
29k views? criminally underrated, such a captivating & moving piece deserves much more ❤
Currently at 187k in over 4 months. Still extremely underrated
Unbelievably underrated video. This film was masterfully put together. You have a real eye for this!
Its extremely unfortunate that such a well done video essay/doc has only 209k views and that you only have 17k subs. I hope you know how appreciated your work is and what a good job you did. I hope that you get the views/subs you deserve.
Ive been going through many video essays this weekend but this one just delivers so much intensity and uncertainty. Even though I knew Magnus would win because of the way you portrayed it I wasn't even sure anymore. The writing was pure excellence. And your voice only adds to the greatness of the video essay. Thank you so much made my night 10/10
This video definitely took some time to create. I appreciate the historical background reference during many of the different moments as well as the videos of the upbringing of the players. Very well done video.
One of the best documentaries I've seen on youtube, congrats
This channel is about to TAKE off. Ive watched so many documentaries on youtube, but none of them really come close to the editing, production, and expert audience engagement that yours does. Great Job dude, and keep it up!
I love your documentaries, you are such a gifted storyteller/writer. You should be so proud of your hard work because every documentary I've seen from you has been an experience I'll remember.
Thank you for the video, much love.
Wow , what a spectacular documentary.
I loved the narration, the Natuto OSTs and cowboy bepop clips.
Kudos to your editing , great stuff.
I hope you do more coverage of other events! This was fantastic! So much effort with clips and visuals from so many things to follow along with the narrative. This was my first world championship since getting into chess and it was so cool to relive these moments! Thank you thank you!
One of the greatest Chess documentaries ever made. Amazing work. A great summary of Championship Chess over the ages, and it's consequences now, while highlighting the strength of the greatest ever player.
ive never said this to any youtuber ever but you are the most underrated channel in here. i hope you get the recognition you deserve
We're sooo back!! 😤
You have a great story-telling talent - this is the best documentary I have seen for at least a month on YT
An absolute perfect & warm speech that Magnus delivered from his heart. You could really feel the emotions building when he spoke about the 1 man in his life that sacrificed everything for his Son's dream, to be The World Champion & now the defending World Champion! Talk about making you parents, family, friends & fans so proud with a brilliant comeback!
I just started watching Magnus 2 mths ago so this was A Chess Documentary that really helped me learn & discover what Magnus has accomplished throughout his chess life.
Congratulations on defending your World Championship Title. Yes, I cried at the end for Magnus, what a sublime victory! You have also inspired me to start playing Chess & my daughters bought me a chess board on my B-day, Apr 10/24 to start learning, I'm having fun at the age of 57! Thank you for your contributions to the world of Chess! You are the GOAT of Chess! You moved me...Susan from Toronto Ontario Canada.
This was amazingly put together. Everything even the smallest detail was the finest quality. Thank you.
This documentary has earned you my subscription, you have done well, I hope you go far, this was very well edited, paced, and, most importantly, documented.
This video is like a documentary made by professionals. I am very impressed and thankful for it and I always love to see chess coverage by people who's channels are not only about chess. Keep up the good work and I wish you all the best in the future.
55:35 if Karjakin immediately resigns after the queens sacrifice it means that it was not that complicated a sacrifice. It was not like the game of the century
I mean, it was a great game AS A WHOLE, but the final move in and of itself wasn't hard to find AT THIS POINT.
It's a mate in 2...
I agree that comparing it to Fischer's game makes no sense.
Your documentaries are incredible. First the Yuto one, now this.... never stop man you have a serious gift for cinematography.
I love this documentary, it feels so legendary. Your work deserves more recognition, keep it up man!
i don't understand how you don't have more followers. The quality of work for your documentaries is off the charts!
This was truly one of the most amazing videos I’ve ever seen on this platform. It’s absolutely shocking to realise that you still have such a small following. You earned a subscriber today. Hope to see more content from you. Cheers.
thank you so much for this very amazing documentary, it's so good and the music is perfect too, and please make more chess documentaries.
As a chess player, seeing ChessBase freeze after 3. Bb5 at 8:05 is so relatable
One the best hours I've spent on youtube. Thank you for creating this documentary! Enjoyed it very much.
Really impressive documentary. You deserve a lot more views.
Incredible quality, just discovered your channel and feel compelled to watch your other videos. You are doing something right!
By far the best chess documentary on youtube! I've watched countless videos about chess and yours was unique. Maybe do another one about Judith Polgar or Kasparov :)
Brilliant work, wonderful documentary! Watched every second and even replayed for the brilliant final mate.
Words can't describe how excited I was to see you post a chess documentary
This is a documentary done phenomenally. May be once in a century work of art
just want to say your videos are so incredibly masterful please never stop what you do every video is so amazing
Thank you for making this incredibly well made
So glad I found your channel, truly some of the best videos on this website. Now I am BEGGING for a full length vid on Judit!
Please make more videos like these about Magnus Carlsen. His journey, struggle and feats he accomplished are things I could watch forever. It's something about him being so dominant that inspires others.
Absolutely fantastic documentary thats well researched and a great watch. Could've done without the anime but the overall editing was sublime
I thought this channel was uploading Netflix documentarys this is so fucking good
Netflix cant do this sorry
The best player won, and now the once-Ukrainian dude sits in Russia with his rubles, never to visit another free nation for the rest of his life while supporting the genocide of Ukrainians. The Quisling of Ukraine sits on a shelf he built himself, probably very pleased with his rubles and the fact that he will not be sent along on a Z-army suicide mission in his old homeland. I just had to get that off my chest since the disgrace dumped on the Ukrainians in general makes me more than mildly annoyed.
Thank you for an awesome documentary, Flamels. You deserve way more than 10k subs, thus I subbed to bring you closer to that absolute minimum target since this was more engaging than what most million subs channels use to hide the lack of a good script and research by blowing up something expensive.
You, sir, are a storyteller. Keep working on your art. I am waiting for your new post in the future.
Bro, THANK YOU SO MUCH. Amazing documentary, you are truly talented. Best of luck today and always!
This is amazing! Would be really interesting to see another documentary about the last Championship, with Ding Liren.
Ding is unbelievably boring. Won in one of the lowest quality championship matches of all time and then disappeared completely. Not good for chess at all.
@@Jeff-dr3euSi basically the Guy who didn't even qualify for the Candidates before the WCC and winning it against the worlds top players and winning the title against onr of the greatest players of this decade "boring"?
i just watched your Yuto doc; now I'm watching this, you're so talented. keep this all up
Probably the best chess documentary I have seen. Bravo.
My bro, this was Very good. Perfect balance between actual chess and The storylines. 10/10
i started watching you from the Yuto Skateboarbing vid, and i still can not understand how on the world your channel and the piece of art that it is has less then 10k subs.
keep up the amazing work Giga-King :D
Incredible. What a documentary. Loved the direction and music, especially the anime music and references lol
I was not expecting to be crying over a chess video in the middle of a work day. This was a beautiful production! Thanks for the amazing video.
Wow. This has to be one of the best, if not *the* best documentary here. Just wow.
An excellent documentary. Well done and thanks for putting it together for us to watch.
How the heck does this channel only have 20k subs? This documentary was phenomenal
This is genuinely one of the best pieces of film I have ever watched. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this.
This channel is amazing. It deserves more views
The story telling through not just the dialogue but the incredible visuals is magnificent. The fact that this channel has not struck gold on the algorithm yet is baffling. This channel is 100% going to see a meteoric rise in the future.
This is an amazing documentary. Thank you for making it.
I watched this with absolute certainty this video would have millions of views
This should have came out before him surrendering the title.
this documentary is a true gem. hope more people find it.
amazing documentary. Great storytelling, emotional music, and very good editing. Good job and thank you
Glad you enjoyed!
This was amazing! I really hope u do more chess documentaries!
How has every video of yours that I've watched so far just made me sob at one point or another
I can't wait to see what you upload next
Bro its insane how good your documentaries are with only 23k subs - I've watched this about 5 times and king ding one, the climbing one a few times and skateboarding one like 4 times, I started played chess because of this documentary! I gaurentee you'll have 1M subs if you keep this up
This is actually the most organized Chess Documentary I've ever seen
This is easily the best piece of DOCUMENTARY I've ever experienced.., This is a masterpiece man, keep doing stuff like this and your carrier would catch the boom.! Great Man..!!!!
The quality of this documentary is incredible!
You really nailed it with this documentary. I don't even play and I was glued to it.
Best documentary about chess and one of the best documentaries ive ever seen
This was incredibly well made and the anime cross over visuals was a cool look into your own personal style of editing. Well done!!
Beautiful documentary. Thank you for making this. What a story. What a legend. And most importantly, what a game.
Congratulations on a magnificent and well told documentary on this world championship and both players. Very well done.
this was a wonderful video to watch. really really sweet at the end. thank you for the good time
Awesome documentary. This needs more views.
This title defense was a leasson to karlsen on how to play against players who are equally good at classical chess. Thats why he played 12 draws against Caruana much easier than against Karjakin. He knew in the tie break, noone can keep up. Karjakin was his biggest challenge
This documentary is breathtaking. Incredible job!
What a great document, honestly one of the best I’ve ever watched. Good job man!
I really was straight chilling on this doc for the first 20ish minutes and once I heard the Aphex Twins music roll I knew I had to immediately hit the like on this one. Great job on this video!
Amazing docu! Even tho I already know most if not all of these events, the way it was presented was so beautiful I almost cried
Wow bro top notch quality, ill be watching your other docs even if im not interested in the subject. You got skills
man ! who are you ?? 2 videos down from you and already it's the 2 best and interesting documentary i've seen ! great job
he is a talented dude for sure!
i cant imagine how good his doc's are.
saw 2 of his docs last year and somehow forgot about this channel, even when i subbed to him back then i never saw his uploads in my feed :/
so glad i found him again!
i wonder how he learned it because it was quality from the very beginning, maybe he had another channel in the past or he is just talented as heck
Amazing work man! Enjoyed every minute of this.
Thanks for this, i got really emotional at the end... Made me appreciate even more the memories i have of my father...
That is super profesionally made video, kudos to you.
This is an outstanding documentary. Well done, very well done.
Your music taste is amazing! I love this documentary!
What an excellent documentary! Juxtaposing real life events with the quiet war over the board, and to such dramatic effect!
I usually don't comment on videos, but I must say this is a great documentary, and it deserves more views.
U really are such a good content creator loved all ur vids so far it’s cool seeing you do more different content
great doco man, keep grinding algorithm is gonna pick you up soon.
The story telling and the editing and music is top tier pls do more
Bravo, this documentary is magnificent. I watch a lot of documentaries and this one was simply splendid! As other commenters have written, it managed to transcend the superficial subject (chess) into one much more deeper about life itself.
What a gem, this definitely deserves more than 124k views 3 months in. Kudos to the creator and please keep em coming, will go through the other vids shortly :)
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CHESS DOCUMENTARY YOU HAVE COOKED UP!
Brilliant documentary. Best thing I've watched all year
Dude wtf, how do you only have 15k subscribers. i've just found your vids and they're KILLER good. If you keep it up, you'll get big.
always the small youtubers with the bangers. great vid man
100%. i think its because they start doing it as a hobby and really love to create masterpieces like the doc's this guy does.
He is not in for the money you can tell. if it pays him a little, great, but i dont think that is his main goal.
He simply tell stories about the things he like.
maybe a lot of the huge youtubers start like this aswell but the bigger they get the more they focus on quantity.
not everyone but i would say like 80% for sure😂
its sad to see a youtuber you loved in the past slowly turning into shit the bigger they get haha
sry for the long text i just thought about it and you right, smaller channels often make some bangers especially this dude
