Let me put it like this. If the minumum wage was lowered to 1 cent an hr and you had to work for minimum wage and you couldnt find a job that pays higher, would you not say that it needs to be raised. Just nobody can live off of 1 cent an hr and nobody can live off of minimum wage where it is right now. So they arent asking for free stuff, theyre asking for the bare minumum to get by.
@Black Shinobi I mean....they still need workers so they cant fire people. And also every company will have the problem so they'll still be competitive with each other. And also the price increase would be pretty negligible. Say you work at a grocery store. Lets say the store makes $2000 from your line alone during one hour youre there. Right now (in my state) they would pay you $12 dollars of what they made. So they go from making $1988 from your line in that hour to $1985 so the prices wont have to raise more than a few cents.

Meanwhile, those low wage jobs still exist, and there will always be people who need to fill those positions, and _all_ of them can't spend thousands of dollars, and several years, going back to school; all while still working their two shitty low-wage jobs. If people have better jobs available they don't pick the shitty ones, when that happens on a large scale shitty jobs start paying more and become more attractive. It's supply and demand. If you are an unremarkable person without any skills or training be grateful there are shitty jobs anyone can do instead of complaining about the pay. The pay of a shitty job is a function of how many people can and will do it, so it is not a matter of empathy or empty rhetoric. The problem is we keep producing talentless and incompetent people who are bitter about their own abilities and place in the world and believe they deserve more. They don't.

Pretty much the whole of the far left cant do that either. Ever try to have a civil conversation with them when they asked for one? More than two decades later, my Walmart "starvation" wages are still supporting my family in my 4 bed 2 bath split level rancher with 2 car garage, and we're all plump and happy. I'm just a sales clerk, not in management.
Let me guess, it's because you actually stuck it out when the job was really sucky and low-paying, and continued being and exemplary employee, and thus discovered that while Walmart isn't exactly great to work for in the beginning, it does get better and higher-paying for those who mange not to get fired? As opposed to calling in sick at every opportunity, doing the bare minimum of work on shift, overstaying all your breaks, getting fired within your first six months, and then blaming the world for the fact that you aren't moving ahead, like say, what I'm sure is a good chunk of the employees you worked with who aren't there anymore?
I worked two jobs for a couple years. The government benefited more than I did. After the Federal Government got done with me my hourly wage on my second job was 2 dollars an hour.

I feel like Ben still acts like every single person has the freedom to take absolutely any job they want. Often people don’t work minimum wage jobs as a career choice, they do it to put food on the table because there’s no other option.
The reason there is no choice is the people who work in minimum wage jobs is cause they don't have the skills or qualifications for better higher paying jobs... that's why a thing called college exists, so you can GAIN those skills.

No one is forced to do anything in this country. If a company is only offering 'starvation wages', then quit, and get a different job.
Even calling it 'starvation wages' is so out of touch it's silly. Over half of the US population is overweight, one of the highest rates in the world. Even a person earning only minimum wage is far more likely to die from eating too much food, than too little. Food is so cheap that anyone can afford to be fat.
That's a very good way of describing it. Some people that I know working jobs like that don't want to change so they think the company has to change for them.

When I first read on Twitter that you had said “working two jobs is a you problem” I had been really disappointed. This is because for the media and I jumped to conclusions about what you meant. I’m glad that you clarified that you don’t think having two jobs is a character flaw and that it’s actually a sign of strong character. Today I was very frustrated at my job as a cashier but I am choosing every day to work there. If I started REALLY not liking my job, I’d always have the freedom to quit. So did my parents. They had 7 children and my mom worked part time. When they finally saved enuf money to buy a modest row house home in Bklyn they had nevr bought anything on credit and they had to buy a toaster on credit so they vould get a credit rating.

I will say that one of the problems we face in free markets is the fact that companies can hire illegals and pay them less than they pay a legal citizen and then let the legal worker go because it's cheaper to have the illegal working. THAT is something that should be fixed in the system, and I think that's something everyone should be able to agree on that needs to be fixed.

The "You" problem: disabled; retired; $1050 per month SS check, $900 per month rent on studio apt. The "You" solution: move from overpriced California (despite it being lifetime home) to cheap-to-live Indiana; purchase home through USDA "Direct" program at 1% interest paying $292 per month (incl. tax and ins.) for 1200 sq ft historic home in the nicest part of town. Life is good. Gas is cheap....so is everything else. So many jobs here the fast food chains had to decrease hours open because they can't get enough people to work at a lower wage. People who say you can't live well on a low salary are wrong. It's easy to move somewhere else. I live like a queen. It is indeed all about choices. Make them for YOUrself.
