  • Sanding, exciting and new,
Come on in, we're abrading you!
    Sanding, your finest reward,
Catch the dust, or it will choke you!
The sander, soon will be making another pass,
The sander, hold it right or you'll be on your ass!
Set your mind on a smooth finish,
and your eye on a perfect sheen,
Change the paper to a finer grit,
Or you you'll be sorry and it'll look like shit!

Ah how silly could I be not to recognize that fom the Love Boat tune.... **sigh**

Always fun to hang out in your shop and hear what you've got going on.

It would be really interesting to see a fusion design of the sanding block. Something that involves using a wooden plate for stiffness and 3D printing the frame and handle.

I've had good luck using a mini split with a heat pump. It works well with Minnesota temps which sound close to what you get in Canada. What's handy is some of them have freeze protection which maintains temp at around 40F so you don't have to keep it heated to 60 when you're not in the shop.
Still, it sounds difficult to give up that setup in the garage for a shed 😆

I wasn't going to say anything about moving out to the shed but those thoughts went through my mind. "Won't it be really hot/cold? You did all that work in your garage just to store your van and some other stuff?" I let people be and try to reduce giving my opinion but I'm glad you're staying in the garage for now. I don't know how many of us could handle the change.

John, The little eys flipping back and forth insert was funny. Glad your staying in the “workshop” that we built together (well I watched).

    Hi John,
The purpose of the design and print orientation factor in for sure. Love the tweak on the handle. Shell thickness or outer layers often compensate for higher infill. I have a 10% infill hockey puck type adaptor that goes on my trolley Jack. Have had no issue with it holding up my car.

When you 3D print the blade, I'll be impressed.

Really appreciate your thoughts on the different strengths of 3d printing - Playing around with my parts I found their orientation on the print bed to be a major factor in strength as well. Keeping with the clothes hook you mentioned, laying it on its side will be the "strongest" orientation, since the layers go vertically and shear forces are handled somewhat better, but then again it needs different strengthenings so that it won't deform under the constant load.

    @billj5645 Před 14 dny

A lot of products that we interact with on a daily basis are marginal in strength. Consider any consumer product made out of multiple pieces of plastic, the places where the pieces connect is marginal in strength and if something happens such as you drop the item it will likely break at the connection points. Now make that same item with the material weaknesses of 3D printing and it may not work for normal use. The connection points need to be strengthened but most people making 3D printed items don't understand engineering stress analysis and don't know how to strengthen connections. They have to build one, wait for it to break, then rebuild it with more material in some areas, until they get something that works.

    That's good rethinking John
We should all probably give second thoughts to many decisions we are going to make.

We got up to 34C ( that is 93F ) last week. We are just south of where John is. Not Arizona heat but with the humidity that we have, it is quite uncomfortable.

Think that is a good decision to stay in a well insulated shop. You do need some comfort with what you do. Also the poem underneath the caption is pretty snazzy 😃

Would you be allowed to put a carport in front of the garage? That would give you shelter from snow + ice on your car.
