  • Do I need a patch bay? How do patch bays even work? How do I connect outboard gear to my DAW? If you've ever asked these questions, hopefully this video will be helpful. I had some requests to show how I have my patch bays set up, so I put this video together to talk about some basics of patch bays, how I set mine up, as well as some examples of how I patch some of my gear in.

It is true as you say in full normalled Mode, when you patch into the top or input, row it breaks the connection but it’s also true if you patch into the bottom or output row as well in this normalled mode
Half mode only breaks the connection when patching into the bottom row thus providing the split, one flowing down and a second out via the addition of said patch cord
I know you are aware and for the sake of the vid the whole description wasn’t neeeded
But for the newer users of PBS I though I would add that xtra bit of functionality,😊
Good vid I also like running xlr or combo and patching xlr to trs up into my Samson S + nice for quick mic, temporary snakes or floating outboard gear

Just ordered a patch bay, thanks for the video, this has been the most informative way to explain setting this up!

Spot on and very well explained.
I’ve got the Clarett 8 and OctoPre and going to get it wired up to a patch bay like you explain.
Again thank you for your video 👍👍

Thank you sooo much for this explanation. However I have one question.
So I just purchased a Trs patchbay to use in my studio.
My only interface that I’m using is the SSL12, which only has 4 analog in and 4 analog out (I can use adat but I don’t have an expansion interface).
My question is, do I NEED an xlr bay? I guess I’m stumped at the part of where I plug my mics into.
I used to obviously just plug them into the inputs of the SSL, but I want the option of sending that vocal signal to my comp.
Long story short, do I need an xlr patch bay? Or is there another way to set everything up.
    Thanks again!

The XLR bay isn't necessary, but it is nice to have one spot where all my mic cables come into the desk...from there I just have short XLR to TRS cables that feed the top TRS patch bay with those inputs.
If you aren't using an external mic pre and are just using the built-in preamps of the interface you can keep plugging the mics directly into the interface and then send out of your DAW to patch into any external compressors, eqs, etc.
So, no...you don't NEED the XLR bay...with my setup it makes things easier though.

Excellent video...so for the XLR patchbay., would you need an XLR to TRS cable to connect to the TRS patchbay?

Yes, it's XLR to TRS cable from the output of the XLR bay to the TRS bay.
