      hey there
      yeah i was looking for the same thing. but maybe you guys can help me out. my issue is that i have a analog synth with 2 outputs (left and right) . im also buying a compressor with again 2 inputs (l & r) and 2 outputs (l & r). i use the same focusrite interface as i the video. if i use just one cable from synth output into my interface - does that mean its mono? and with the compressor - i would have to connect 2 cables from the interface output into 2 compressor inputs and then from the compressor output into the 2 interface inputs?
      does having left and right inputs and outputs always mean im recording 2 files?

    • @NKWTI
      @NKWTI Před 2 lety +1

      Hook your mic up to the hardware preamp you want to use, go output with a balanced TRS (1/4 inch cable that has 2 black rings on the plug) and then go in with the other end of the TRS cable to the interface input or line-in. Make sure the interface gain is all the way down, if you have an output knob to your interface then that knob is able to be played with however you want and won't negatively affect the sound, but anything labeled gain must be set to 0. If you only have XLR outputs or don't have a line output from your hardware preamp, you can do the method above but you must use either a male XLR to balanced TRS cable, or use one of those adapter heads that converts the male end of the XLR to a balanced TRS. The interface end of the cable absolutely has to go into the line-in port with TRS, otherwise it will not sound so great with mic-in using XLR to XLR. Always think of XLR inputs as only something you want to initially go into something with, but TRS cables are "patch cables" that chain anything extra together, you never use XLR cables to chain/patch together preamps to preamps or compressors to preamps or mixers, etc, only the first thing in the chain gets the XLR connection.

  • @NKWTI
    @NKWTI Před 2 lety +1

    It works beautifully, silky smooth. I have a Volt 2 from Universal Audio and hooking up my hardware preamps to the interface with the gain all the way down just sounds so amazing, especially if you're starting with a high resolution interface. You'll want to go trs to trs from preamp to interface line in with the interface gain all the way down or you can go xlr out and use an adapter to go trs in to interface

    This might sound like an obvious question, but I am looking at getting one of the ART preamps for vocals, acoustic guitars etc... I own a Scarlett 18i8 3rd gen, but using your example here of Mic > Pre > comp > Interface. Can I hook it up this way Mic (xlr) > ART pre (xlr) > comp (1/4 trs) > line input of the 18i8 instead of xlr? Or would I lose audio quality and if that possible? Or should I just use XLR in all paths? thanks for the good info!

  • @Sadlander2
    @Sadlander2 Před 3 lety

    Here's my situation: I have a microphone, a small USB mixer that I use as my audio interface to connect to my computer and I have an external compressor (dbx 166). The way I use it now is, I go from my microphone into my compressor and use the compressor's make-up gain as my mic pre-amp and then I go from there into my mixer and I connect my mixer into my computer through its USB output.
    I plan to buy a Scarlett 2i2 and use that as my audio interface but also as my mic pre-amp because the mixer that I'm using now, even at a low gain setting, has quite some floor noise. But here's my question: how could I first pre-amp my microphone before going into my compressor and from there into my computer?
    I guess that I could do it the way I'm doing now, which is, going into my compressor first and then into the Scarlett 2i2 but it would make more sense going into the mic pre-amp first and from there into the compressor but then, how could I go into my computer?
    Or I could try to use the Scarlett 2i2 only as a mic pre-amp, going from there into the compressor, then into my USB mixer and if the signal coming from the Scarlett and from the compressor is loud enough, I could turn the gain from the mixer very, very low to minimize the mixer's noise. I guess this would work but I'd rather use the Scarlett 2i2 as my audio interface because my mixer's converter is only 16-bit while the Scarlett's converters are 24-bit/192 kHz.
    But here's an idea. Since the Scarlett 2i2 has 2 inputs, would this work:
    - Microphone into 1st input of the Scarlett
    - from the Scarlett's output into the compressor
    - from the compressor's output back into the Scarlett but in the 2nd input
    - from the Scarlett's USB output into the Computer
    - in my DAW, only use the Scarlett's 2nd input signal (the one coming from the compressor)
    I've never used a Scarlett before but from what I could see, if it has more than 1 input, you can have seperated tracks per input in your DAW, so this should work. I'm only worried about the output, if I go from the compressor back into the Scarlett, if that signal would merge with the signal from the 1st input and create a feedback...
    What do you think?

      If I’m not mistaking, you need to route that through your recording program. And each setup is different for that purpose. You’ll more than likely have to contact the company that makes you interface. You’ll need to ask about how to run outboard gear to your existing interface and they should be able to walk you through it if it’s possible

      Did you get it figured out?

    • @BreakHarpe
      @BreakHarpe Před 4 lety +1

      @@CLEANMUDVIDEOS I thought I had it but I still didn't. The only reason I figured it out is because this isn't my 1st rodeo. The last set up I had I had everything including an mbox 2 interface which is the only thing that separated my new set up. I haven't had my own set up 4 a couple of years so I had forgotten a few things. Studios needed a few different things back then. I had a mic preamp back then, but I kept watching all these new videos talking about these new interfaces came with built in preamps. So once I started recording, my mic sounded good but it didn't come out like before, & the only thing that I didn't use this time was a mic preamp so luckily I still had my studio equipment & found your video to see if people still used pre amps. To make a long story short I finally realized that the reason what you were saying didnt make any sense to me is ecause I only had 2 inputs, but I started off with the mbox2 which had 4 inputs on the back instead of 2 & my 2 were already full with the cables for the monitors so I realized that alot of people now days only use their headphones instead of their headphones & monitors or alot of people only use their headphones & monitors (Like Me) because since all these dumb ass CZcamsrs act like mic preamps in these interfaces are so great that you didn't need an external pre amp anymore. I have a focusrite 2i2, so now I'm going to buy a presonus 26c, that way I can use my monitors along with my preamp. Not being disrespectful or anything bro but you had alot of filler in this video & skipped over the main part which should've been how to connect the preamp to the interface & shown how the wires looked & you should've put a link in your description to every piece of equipment you used in the video so they can go straight to it & buy without having to figure it out themselves

    • @CLEANMUDVIDEOS
      @CLEANMUDVIDEOS  Před 4 lety +1

      Break Harpe appreciate your feedback! As you see the way I explained it in the video, was to not box people in to only being able to use 1/4” or xlr cables. Either set could work depending on what your preamp and compressor takes. So, no it’s not as easy as just saying grab these cables and you’ll be good. Some outboard gear requires xlr and some require 1/4”, while others can take both. I gave the concept and it’s up to the viewer to use the connections that work for them. Also the statement that you made about CZcamsrs saying you don’t need an external preamp is dumb, that’s subjective. A lot of people are creating great music with the stock interface preamps. Sometimes, there’s no need to get an external preamp unless you are going for a specific sound or situation. I do appreciate your feedback but you have strong OPINIONS that are truly only subjective. You almost come off as arrogant, seeming you know best. What works for you may not work for others and vice versa. That’s kind of how life works.

      @@CLEANMUDVIDEOS That's why you can't tell niggaz nothing because they always look at it as a nigga thinking he know everything, he think he's better than everybody,or he's hating. You a dude who'd do better with nothing but yes men around you & no growth. I'm not a content creator so how do you think I came up with that "SUGGESTION" on how you could try to do it in the future??? Hmmmm maybe because I've seen that method be successful!!!! 🥳🥳🥳 I've seen multiple very helpful videos doing exactly what I "SUGGESTED" you to do, you know the each 1 teach 1 thing. Oh I guess niggaz ain't get the memo on that yet huh??? It had nothing to do with me knowing everything because if I knew everything I wouldn't even be over here in the 1st place now would I? 1 example is I've seen a video where it was 3 different ways to hook up some speakers, they showed how hook it up with a aux line, an rca (which came in the box), but the dude preferred use the TRS he bought separately & he broke down how they all worked which only took 30 seconds. He showed what cords go where, plugged them in, did a sound test, finished the video, then put the links in the description to all of the stuff in the video...But guess what color all these youtubers were???? WHITE!!! So I see you doing your thing & I went out the way to let you no "It's no disrespect bro" but you still was butt hurt like I insulted you, but I was trying to give some light constructive criticism from a viewers point by suggesting for you to try to do some of the things that I found to help me best. It doesn't mean I was right or wrong, but I've done that same exact thing to the white people & they didn't feel no type of way & then they explained certain things & we had a kool convo. And what you're saying about the mic preamps are subjective, duh but a newbie doesn't know that smfh. I challenge you to find a 1 "How to build a home studio" video in the last 3 or 4 years where they mention an Extermal Mic pre amp. I looked at a shyt load of Focusrite videos before I decided to switch & they all pushed the narrative that it already has built in preamps, but I still used my old preamp to make it sound dope soon as I record. I bought my 1st set up 8 years ago & when I posted pictures of my set up people who have had home studios way before me was asking "What does that grey box do???" So I'm not talking out of my ass....When you're a newbie & all the interface videos you watch say they already have preamps built in them & never mention external preamps then why would you even think about getting a mic preamp, but we all know some preamps are better than others & will make the others work better. I'm looking at it from a beginner's standpoint & not a nigga who already knows everything because people who already know everything wouldn't even be over here. I usually don't say shyt to niggaz because of situations like this. You're feeling some type of way when I said nothing disrespectful, didn't insult you, or call you out your name...smh That's some insecure emotional ass shyt. Niggaz die over stupid shyt like that everyday, that's EGO. If a person says straight up that he's not on no trolling disrespectful shyt, you can't hear my tone nor my inflection & you're taking it like a nigga personally came to your channel to try & talk down to you...smfh #TRAGIC

      Break Harpe bruh, evidently you took everything I said out of context and actually got offended. As well, you didn’t hear my tone in saying what I said. I never even said you know everything. I just said you had a strong “Opinion.” You spoke as if I did things wrongly. I feel as though I tried to answer with a sense of openness. Thanked you for your suggestions which I do with everyone. I didn’t have any hard feelings whatsoever. Seems like you took offense with me offering you a suggestion as well. Definitely not that serious at all. How did this become about black/white ppl? Not sure. I think you took me as being confrontational but if you check me out in any of my videos, that ain’t me. If you recall, you called CZcamsrs dumb for saying a person doesn’t need a preamp. All I said is that it is all subjective. Ain’t looking to go back and forth with you my dude. It is what it is. I won’t get disrespectful. We all operate differently.

    Theres no reason to use the art preamp, the focusrite has a mic preamp built in.

    The problem with your instructions, is that the sound will be distorted and you wont get a fully clean signal , because your chain is going through 2 preamps , that not good bro, link me and I will tell you the solution for resolve this problem.

      Thanks for your input! That’s something that I do realize. Honestly, just wanted to be able to give an option to had a different flavor. I know that this way won’t bypass the Scarlett’s internal preamps. From my understanding, I didn’t know the internal preamps of this unit could be bypassed.

      @@CLEANMUDVIDEOS use a direct box and convert the output from the external to line signal and this will bypass the preamp in that version of forcusrite rite, however the id22 in the background is the prefect audio interface for this situation, those preamps can be bypassed , and to be honest with getting a clean single is best. so if you want a color from a extremal preamp dont do it with another preamp because it really cause unnecessary noise in the recording. Believe me I learn all of this the expensive and Hard way
