Hey Colt! Here’s a tip on recall that I heard from 40. If you have a plugin version of your hardware, load it up on the track, set the same settings on your plugin as your hardware then leave the plugin on bypass.
I would do this when i was using one outboard comp on my mixbus.
This is a very cool way to do it
Being an engineer and producer in the 1980s we did everything old school. No automation, no computer, no cell phone. Analog console and 2 inch tape. We just made charts of the console and every piece of gear and xeroxed a few hundred copies so we had them for sessions. It got you close to where you left off so you had a good restarting place for a mix. I say this because people want to live in the box which is great but if you spend time on an analog console and hardware, for me it is more of an experience musically.
Everyone in the industry now is too lazy and weak to do this.

For some hardware/console owners, in order to avoid some more tedious recalls, (and a good practice in general) I’ve found it to be a good idea to print stems through your hardware. That way, you only have to recall a couple of things, depending on the request.
As volatile as a plug in can be, it’s probably a good idea to print stems on everything.

This is exactly what I do. I print everything. Also allows me to use the same gear on different stems 💁🏼♂️ the whole point of having the gear is using it!

As I've said elsewhere, it's sort of weird that things have completely flipped around. In the old days, amateurs could get away with a DAW while pros needed a console and outboard gear. Now, music is so artificial and manipulated and constantly remixed and such that professionals almost have to have a DAW, while we amateurs can get away with a console.
I love having a console and only using outboard gear, but I only work on my own music and one song at a time, from start to finish. It's so incredibly interactive and natural to work that way. I use the DAW as digital tape deck basically. I don't edit or tune or any of that silliness, and I only use a couple plugins (BFD3 for drums since I'm in an apartment, and a sample based piano synth if I need a piano.) If I can ever get into a house, I'll get rid of those also. And I'm trying to record it as it should sound (as much eq, comp and f/x on the way in as I can) and not treat performances as just raw materials to edit into a song.
So, for me, a console is a great way to work, just as it was the 60s and 70s, where the goals of music makers were the same as mine are now. It does mean that, if I want it to sound better, I have to get better at writing, playing, arranging, recording and engineering. But that's how it should be. No one gives a crap if I post yet another song. So why should I spend a bunch of time sitting at a computer to crank out more artificially tweaked songs more quickly, that don't honestly represent my capabilities anyway, and that hardly anyone is going to listen to?
Instead, I spend my time getting better at all the things that let me just get it down right to start with. That's a longer row to hoe, but no one is waiting for me to get to the end of the row anyway. And, in the end, it'll make for the most natural, intuitive way to create music, which by then maybe someone WILL want to listen to (and for the right reasons.)

I only have 3 pieces that I use for hybrid mixing and even that sucks to recall. So thankful for detented knobs and gear manufacturers who make printable recall sheets 😅
Just print the effect back into your daw. If you still need to adjust it you probably didn't need to recall it perfectly anyway

I hated having to do recalls with hardware. Especially now every van expects to do as many mix corrections as possible. Probably a boundaries issue on my part, but a lot of times we’re on mix six or seven by the time I’m done. The littlest tweaks.
I started in ‘93. Hardware sounds great. But it’s an absolute pain in the d*ck in comparison to modern software. In 2018, I had to be honest with myself: I could no longer hear significant differences (at least that would be detrimental to the music) between hardware and software. I went fully in the box. Best decision I ever made! I still sometimes get misty eyed about the old days. But then I remember the ball ache of recall to raise the hi hat by half a Db…

Another great video Colt. I wonder if you couldn't use plug-in doctor and or a combination of waves q clone and plug-in doctor to save an actual image of the response curve of each piece of hardware as you have a configured at the end of each mix. I don't personally have plug-in doctor and have not used it so I don't know what options there are as far as having one signal live and comparing that to a previously saved curve for reference. Anyway the idea seems like it could be helpful in some cases where you have devices that have smaller knobs and higher resolutions that might be difficult to match. I hope this makes sense.
I thought I was the only one who did phone I pics😅. Man u made me feel like a pro again cause I was like ain't no way dudes is just writing down the input of an 1176 on paper. But as far as power... I'd say especially in a hardware environment see how much your situation can allow electricity wise. If ur a homeowner add a dedicated circuit. And yeah make it 20 amps. Ensure your panel is up to code 😅. Kinda gotta say that part. Then add a series mode surge protector. (Ie. Surge x) They work diff than the mov based power conditioners. U could add a power conditioner/voltage regulator. A few extra steps and it can really give capacitors longer life.
Great tips, thank you. I'm still working on building my "system", trying to either build or buy hardware as I can afford. My goal is Hybrid. I would go totally analog if I could afford a good colsole and hardware.
But question, would you consider your system Hybrid as you are using hardware mostly with a digital DAW? I ask because I am confused if having a console can still be in a Hybrid system? Like a smaller console + hardware?

Also to add to the power conditioner conversation, definitely get a non-sacrificial power conditioner. They’re more expensive, but will last longer than a sacrificial power conditioner.
One other challenge with external hardware and their inherent noise is gain staging. Getting the audio out of the computer, across all your hw and back in takes a lot more care in managing levels across all those devices. It can also be a Pro though, as you can manually drive analog gear harder if you need to in ways you can’t always emulate in sw.
Well dont record your audio on your Pc ,easy as that xd No Trouble getting it Out noisless or latency
@2:17 As a solution to the bus compressor problem, check out WES Audio, especially their Dione bus compressor. It's basically an analog bus compressor with digital controls and full recall capability. Also, their stuff will still be usable without any software.

if you have a lot of good outboard gear, but aren't trained on it, is it easy to trap the gear with poor settings if you're recording drums for example? can an outboard eq that needs a lot of changes be undone? or if it's through a good eq, you're able to re-eq to whatever you'd like once you get the track? i'm guessing that once something is compressed or limited with outboard gear using poor settings, it's pretty much ruined right?

I used to agree with your assurtion. Now, I have a hybrid setup. I send my tracks out to a Neve 16 ch Summing Mixer, then into a Neve Master Bus Processor, then into a Burl B2 Bomber A/D back into my interface via spdif. Plugins could never touch how amazing it sounds.
maybe you already covered this in another video, but do you run every track through hardware simultaneously, separately or do you just run your buses through it?
I like to print to track to save latency issues and free up more post processing with hardware.
I mix with tons of hardwares and agree with all you say, except for separating power cables from audio cables. Does it really has a significant impact? Cuz mine all running together and I didn’t notice any unwanted noise.

I was hoping you’d cover general maintenance of potentiometers or dials. Often get noise and crackling in volume knobs or even push buttons on gear and have tried a few things, so far ‘spray’ isopropyl alcohol seems to do the trick, but only for a couple weeks. Curious if you have any tips or suggestions. You have an awesome channel by the way! I have been a producer and engineer for over 40 years, and I learn something from every one of your vids. So thanks Colt!

Which Pope audio module do you have ? Seems they make several configurations of that model. Wit without opamps etc.
I would think with an SSL EQ you could arguably get closer, even with pictures, to the frequency you're really wanting to cut than with fixed eq detents. Like maybe the fixed eq has a detent at 500 but you really need like 400. With the SSl you may end up cutting around 430 trying to match the picture but in the end it's still more accurate. Just my take.

Studio One allows you to put photos right in your session with the Pipeline plugin. I have no hardware to use, but I thought that feature was super neat when I found out about it.
Do you know if you can use hardware in the mastering side of Studio One? I'd love to add an I/O when I'm mastering.
@@LaurenPassarelli I’m not sure about that one tbh. I’ve never used it as a specific mastering tool. I just slap ozone on my mix bus and call it a day for my beats. Lol. I just happened to catch the pipeline feature on a SO tutorial video. And all the videos I’ve seen are done fr the mix window and they’ll just send a bus through the hardware and all that.
@@LaurenPassarelli I'm not sure about your question, but you can always set your I/O preference when in the project page (for mastering). From the navigation header you go to Studio One / Preferences / Project setup (bottom left corner) / Audio I/O setup, there you can save your I/O rooting to the project file. From there on, you add the pipeline plugin associated with the saved I/O settings, Studio One will automatically calibrate the I/O latency and you'll be able to send it through the hardware you have. Just use it as a regular plugin in your mastering chain, then take picture of it for project recall.

I'm too forgetful with the photos, like I forget to label them or put them in my computer, so they don't make sense the next day. I've been feeling the pain of having an EQ with not detents! Have you tried the Patchrat app Colt?
i use hardware inserts and commit those tracks so its baked in. No recall on everything necessary. If you need to change an element just bring that back in and reprocess.

I want to use Pro Tools inserts but its ahead of time when check with a recorded click. I gave up
To circumvent alot of these issues for the patch bay you can use flock audio patch and for complete recall I would suggest using alot of wes audio gear that can be used for total recall as analog gear
The only problem with digital patch bays is they become obsolete once software support dropped. I preffer the good ole analog patch bays that will last you a life time. I have a MOTU AVB that has a virtual patchbay built in but the software won't be support forever. I instead use a Redco patch bay. Once drivers are no loner supported I would have to upgrade my interface at some point in time.
@@eman0828 I feel you. I still used my redco and switch craft bays also. Part of being an engineer is having fail safes and back up plans. Maybe keep a physical one just in case and still go flock. At the end of the day pretty much anything digital goes obsolete at some point. Hopefully flock is a company that stays around and keeps updating units for a very long lifespan... but it's tough either way.
Hardware is SO worth it and you actually own something tangible

Here is an idea for each piece of hardware take a pic of it…then make a pdf for recall sheets we did that at fullsail that way you can have detailed notes on what you did and didn’t use….

Sorry to be THAT guy, but it's worth noting TT patchbays are TRS. This refers to the wiring scheme (tip/ring/sleeve) and not the size of the connector. What you are describing is the difference between TT and 1/4 inch connectors. They are both TRS and yes, they are both fine. That's all...carry on!

Great viseo.... Hardware sounds good but besides expense, what a pain in the butt and time waster to use, maintain, patch bay, power issues ...ahhhhh
I am 100% in the box and I do not believe in analog being superior over digital. Analog brings certain sound color but brings noise and is expensive to run and keep going. Digital sounds clean and plugins have gone a long way from sounding sterile and weak to musical and close to the analog counterparts.
Hardware is the past. Don't need any of it.

@ColtCapperune ..you need a tube tester, buddy. Replacing all the tubes just because something sounds funny sounds _expensive_ to me, and very likely overkill especially if it is an issue with just one tube. If you test the tubes individually, then you can at least know that's the issue you're hearing. Honestly, tubes last a pretty long time so I'd be surprised if they're really the culprit particularly often. And even when that is the case, from a cost perspective, I wouldn't advocate changing all the tubes just because one went out. The only time that would be reasonable would be if you had something like a twin channel, and wanted the counterpart tube on each channel to be fresh/matched. Or, if a device has multiple tubes of the same spec (like having two 12ax7's), there might be an argument for replacing both, using a "matched set". But--opinion alert--I think "matched set" is just a phrase used to sell a second tube. If you pop out both tubes in your device and test them, and let's say one of them measures below spec, and you order a replacement tube and test it, and it's within spec, it's probably going to be as close to your good tube as any "matched set" ordered from a supplier, like TubesAndMore, etc. Maybe experiment with that idea: Order a matched set, test them. Then pull a single tube of the same spec from a working device and measure it, and see how it compares to one from the new, matched set. Maybe I'm wrong but one thing I'm sure about: tubes don't fail that often, and replacing all of them because one of them is borked is definitely overkill.
In fact, _personally_ I have more confidence in a currently working tube than one I'm just pulling out of the box. Because a tube that's within spec and has been working is a more trusted commodity than one that has bounced around in shipping. My point is, when you reconnect the device, if you've replaced all the tubes, you now have several unknown commodities. Maybe one of the new tube goes out in just a few days? Then you're pulling the device again. But if you replace just the malfunctioning tube, then really, there is only 1/N tubes that needs to prove itself.

By far (and it's not even close), I've had more down time due to software not working (constant upgrades, MacOs updates, etc etc) than I ever had with hardware. In fact, just this week alone, I lost several hours having to uninstall and reinstall a bunch of stuff. The vendor (who will remain nameless) actually wanted to me to uninstall EVERY plugin, and then just reinstall their stuff to diagnose a problem. Even the biggest SW vendors are not immune to causing chaos with they rollout new stuff. (My compressors and hw eqs never get "updates".)
I only track with hardware. All the mixing, unless I need something VERY specific, is all itb these days

But when taking photos of settings I’ve often wished I could import a jpg into my DAW’s channel notes. Seriously? Why isn’t this a thing?
There is a plugin for it called snapshot.
Until the company goes broke or no longer supports the product, then it becomes an expensive paperweight. Just go straight analog it lasts forever and holds it value.

@@kenntakac5034 you can, but wesaudio gear doesn't have any values written around their dials so without the plugins you don't know what your settings are and you definitely can't recall your settings even by taking pictures so your fkd.

MEGASUPERAMAZING video but I would like to know, why in 2023 there is still stupid guys keeping developing expensive hardware gear and other idiots buy them, for the price of one good hardware piece you can buy 3. or 5 even ten plug-ins. I thing I have some ideas : at first they want to have all the FX and dynamic tools existing in the entire world, so they can say : come in my studi,o I've got every thi,ng you need! The other argument is that nobody have the money to buy50 good hardware pieces and also not the time ( wich means MONEY........a lot of )to Make A/B comparaisons between 6 compressors on one vocal mic.
But for me it is good to have a maximum of hardware gear ( I'm not a studio guy but a live soundmen with the same choices to do ) sorry for my poor english, and would like to work with hardware and a good analog desk ( Midas XL 4, one of the best! ) Why ?
Because for.me and I don't thing I'm the only one. Even we can find good plugins HARDWARE SOUNDS BETTER.

it's 2022....hardware is useless...just ask some of the best engineers in the World....I get amazing records using Reaper stock plugins...you wanna know what the trick is??? real people performing things properly with real, great equipment...job becomes easy at that point..compress the snare correctly so clean it up....90 HZ HPF on all stringed instruments....heavily compress the bottom end of the bass to make up for the filter and tighten its low frequency and voila....you're already close
Any professional can make a perfect sounding record using stock plugins in 2022. Cables have been nulltested by people like Ethan Weiner and there is defacto no electrical difference between then. You are being marketed to as an audio professional, don't fall for it.
Mixing without Hardware sucks, as soon as they have you up to your neck in plugins they'll tell you that they sound like shit and the hardware is better so you buy it all, it's a scam. You waste your money year after year on plugins and updates and in 20 years you'll have a bunch of expired software. If you would have put that money into Hardware you would have a studio. Wake up
Software becomes obsolete and no longer functional one support is dropped. Hardware will last a life time that will be the same 30-40 years later that will stll be functional with some maintenance. Hardware holds its vaule while software is a money pit that has no resale vaule.
