    Italy in general is divided because of how it always was.
    Remember, most big cities were it's own kingdoms/republics (República Florentina, Repùblica de Venèsia etc) and would often fight each other.
    While some people tried to untie them before(Cesare) they were divided until early to mid 19th century.

    A lot of intense football rivalries stem from issues that have little to do with the game. In Scotland you have Rangers / Celtic and Hearts / Hibs which is religion. Rangers and Hearts are Protestant, Celtic and Hibs Catholic. And they hate each other. The Manchester Liverpool rivalry can be traced back to the creation of the Manchester ship canal. Portsmouth and Southampton is down to a dock workers strike years ago. Arsenal Tottenham is because we moved from Woolwich to North London and back in 1914 or so our then slightly shady owner did some underhand shit to get Spurs relegated. You have Yorkshire clubs fans still hating Midlands clubs fans due to the miners strike in the early 80's.
    As an aside the reason Italian fans in particular hate Liverpool fans can be traced back to what happened in Heysel.

Mining was a massive industry in Yorkshire and Notts in particular.

      @Danny Isambard not quite. There were a lot of city states, yes, but there were also bigger states, the biggest ones being the papal states, sardegna, Venice and Naples/sicily. But they were also ruled by other kingdoms. The Islands were ruled by greeks, arabs and spaniards, in the north there were german rulers, most notably the holy roman empire. Italy as a nation wasn't created until 1861 (yesterday was the anniversary) and the last regions were added after ww1. So there have been loads of influences and different rulers that has shaped the cultures of Italy and it's regions, which is part of the reason why a lot of regions have very distinct dialects and cultures, which they are very proud of

    As a Roma fan, I feel two things need to be clarified. Yes, Roma historically had a left-wing firm in the Fedayn, but right-wing overtones are massively present in the Roma terraces as well, although the Lazio fans are more "easily" linked to extreme right-wing politics. Also, Lazio didn't really "stand up" to the regime in refusing the merger, as actually the merger was refused by a fascist general. And as long as there is a kind of extreme tone to some derbies around the stadium, it is lovely how the atmosphere around a derby unravels through the bars and streets of Rome, as fans of each team jeer each other.

      i'm a lazio fan and I completely agree. Roma and Lazio, like many other fan bases in Italy, are affected by destructive elements. However, when it comes to Lazio, this tends to make even more headlines due to incidents from 20-30-40 years ago, which, however, persist. I would also add that the Rome-Lazio derby is hard to comprehend from the outside; you have to experience it, and not just those two times a year, but all the time. There's a lot of rivalry, but within the Roman context, it's a rivalry filled with irony. At least, that's how I see it

      This is very accurate. Definitely different shades of right wing in the fanbases, but deeply rooted in both. I think the "Roma left wing" view comes from the new owners' push at making Roma marketable internationally (hello, Disneyland), as the "b-but Lazio are evil!" talk I see online comes from America-based Roma fans.
      Its probably difficult to tell which parts of the rivalry are serious and which are not. Like the Anne Frank thing was a big story and of course made headlines, but has always been done for comical reasons rather than serious. An outsider might see that type of insult and think its a good representation of the two, but Roma (and the rest of us) regularly use the same insult towards Juve.

    • @dinamobabel
      @dinamobabel Před 8 měsíci

      @@YevOnegin not at all. And there is a difference: Roma's left wing credentials have to do with a powerful group within the Roma tifo, the Fedayn, who were left wing. The Roma support was apolitical and included people from all the political arc. The American property doesn't count in this, and in fact it has been criticised for not going heavy on some banners with subtle right-wing simbology. As far as Lazio supporters are not all fascists and there have been initiatives by Lazio supporters to counter this image, a relevant part of the curva is unapologetically fascist, they are undoubtedly among the most right wing supporters in Italy and the aforementioned antifascist fans have even been physically attacked by other Lazio fans for that.

    Being not Italian and specifically not a Roman, you did an outstanding job.
    Lazio fans in Rome are mostly radicated in the upper class areas, while Roma fans are mostly to be found in lower class areas. Roma fans outnumber Lazio fans, that is true, but the majority of Roma fans just support the team to feel part of the majority. A Lazio fan picks Lazio because he (normally) truly embraces its traditions and identity. You said it too after all, the very first team ever founded in Rome was Lazio and not Roma, who just tried to convince Lazio to be part of them. It is an historical facy that Lazio refused Roma.
    Lazio fans are amongst the most feared and specifically, creative fans in the world. They created some of the most incredible "coreografie", which is the reason why I became a Lazio fan. Roma fans were never able to live up to the Lazio standards. I still remember a derby when Roma fans weren't even able to unroll their banner. That is something very embarassing for any ultras crew.
    When you go to Rome you seem to find a large majority of Roma fans around. Roma started a very efficinet marketing plan, opening stores all over the city. Lazio is way behind on that aspect, but there are plenty of Lazio fans all around the city.
    Lastly, the most important derby ever was played on May 26th, 2013. Coppa Italia final was Lazio vs Roma. That was the final derby, the only derby in history that assigned a trophy. Lazio won that derby and that will be forever something that will hunt Roma's fan dreams. Media in Rome are super supportive for Roma and try to belittle Lazio all the times.
    Lazio is the real, proud football representative of the city of Rome.

Now see i live in Thessaloniki and there is an intense rivalry over here, Aris vs Paok. I'm an Aris fan. Lots of similarities that i can notice such as: 1.We were the first team founded in the city, with the exception of Iraklis, that team that has not seen good days since the early 80s and spends most of his time, fighting with exctinction, in the lower leagues. 2. Aris just like Lazio has most of its fans in upper class areas and Paok in lower class areas. 3. Paok fans outnumber Aris fans, but the majority of Paok fans just support the team to feel part of the majority and because its trendy. 4. Only a fan who truly comprehends and embraces Aris traditions and identity becomes a fan of our team. 5. Paok has been trying to destroy all other teams in Northern Greece, because they wanted to consume us essentially and they are still trying that. While they didn't officially asked us to join them per se, i see it as kind of a similar situation where we rejected their attempts to dominate us. 6. We have incredable fans too that know how to make our stadium vibrant and create an incredible atmosphere. 7. Paok ultras are cowards and the laughingstock of Greece, they are also very violent, though not at all feared. 8. Media and government are super supportive of Paok and essentially against us. 9. We have the us against everyone mentality more than any other team in Greece.

    Neither club can be proud of the fascists among their "supporters". Like many fascists, they are also cowards of the worst kind who act "bravely" when they have knives in their hands. If they were stripped of their weapons, the only activity they would excel at would be running away from anyone who stood up to them. Their fellow citizens MUST be ashamed of the pondlife who dwell amongst them. Thousands of brave allied armed forces as well as true Italian patriots fought and some sacrificed their lives to free Italy from the evils of fascism. These so-called "ultras" stain the good name of Italian sport and sportsmanship and the sooner both clubs ban them all; the better. Viva Roma!

      @francescobaruzzi16annifa99 Před 2 měsíci

      You can’t just pick a team and be a loyal fan… but if you still want a team to cheer for and to be proud of, I’d go for one of the two Rome clubs, Genoa or Sampdoria, Torino, Lecce or clubs like these. They all have a great history (except for Lecce) and their fans are very passionate. I’d suggest doing more research if you want the best, but again, you’ll need to be interested with a team and actually fall in love with it. Oh and if you really like Immobile, he made history with Lazio and he was a really great striker until last year, so Lazio could be your choice

Only few players had guts to stay. But with a huge support from the fans we survived. Totally understand Lazio fans in that way where from the native club they almost push you out of scene. Decent video but politically there are some wrong claims. Mussolini was not a fan of Lazio or football in general. He just used it as a vehicle to spread his fascist ideals, just like other political leaders have done all over the world. He was always more of a rugby fan, as that was the upper class sport.
    As for the fans: Roma ultras also have a far right element amongst them, it's definitely not a Lazio ultra thing alone. There's actually a very good book about it called: Football, Fascism and Fandom which has interviews with ultras of both clubs about their politics. They make it clear that while they hate each other on the terraces, they have the same political ideology and band together over this in a political sense.
