First off all it may not be something wrong with the car if it's rolling coal, the owner may have a performance tuner in it which is dumping more fuel to make more power which in turn crates the smoke. Ever seen diesel drags or pulls? Also diesels have been found to be far more fuel efficient than gasolines. Also gasolines are just as bad if not worse, you just can't see all the exhaust gasses like you can with a tweaked out diesel.

They can’t have a three way catalytic converter like gasoline cars can. It’s also why VW cheated.. after offering the -seemingly- impossible efficient and clean burning diesel. They can’t go to the scrappers fast enough. They are rolling environmental disasters.

could have been a lot of things. Broken vacuum line going from waste-gate controller to the waste gate, bad injectors, bad injector quantity values, (nearly) clogged EGR valve...etc. But it definitely doesn't automatically mean that someone has "modded" it.
I'm pretty sure the last pre-emissions TDI sold in north america was the 2006 VW equipped with a Pumpe duse engine. The 2009s and up are Common rail injected with a dpf.
i mean that Common rail system is only used by merc and other like ppd is used by most VAG cars. Almost same but still not the same. But im sure that BMW exactly common rail:D

Cummins engines are used in everything from light trucks (eg a 3/4 ton) all the way up to power generation for industrial facilities. Tractors, earth-movers, Caterpillars. In an application where you want an engine with a pedigree for doing work, it's at the top. Not a good luxury motor, but it'll tow three Mercedes' on a trailer.

That's not something wrong with the exhaust, the smoke is caused by excess consumption of fuel. So either it's modified (bigger injectors i'd imagine) or it has not been serviced properly
I have a diesel golf MK4 and to be fair you get carbon build up which causes you to bog down and when you do you have to thrash the engine to clear the soot out.
its no different than the normal dust and dirt, pollen, anything really thats just in the air. My entire engine (which is a alh 1.9 tdi) was covered in yellow pollen and i didnt have a spot of it on the air filter. And you are susposed to clean or replace your air filter once or twice a year anyways

i hope you know that Cummins engines aren't strictly used in pickup trucks. id still prefer my vw or cummins, way cheaper for me, ive seen 1 mercedes diesel car before, i dont remember how many diesel vw's and cummins ive seen before. a vw parts car with a diesel i can get for $250 with a running engine with only 152,000km on it. the only mercedes diesel car thats local the guy is asking $1500 and it was rear ended and wrote off, still a good engine but 327000km's.
the world uses metric now. ofcourse whn you have an 8 litre engine it should last longer, but from what i know those fords somitemes burst into flames due to poor wiring quality. only the golf mk3 is a rust bucket the others are fine. the 2 litre 4cyl tdi engine can last with ease 400 000 km with a nice 5,5 litre/100km and 115 to 130 hp (from2002)

That year the ALH didn't have DPF systems on it. just a "cat" If it was not modified, it probably had a clogged intake manifold due to the EGR system.

Not necessarily. This is just a byproduct of having a custom ECU map in a TDI.
That's not rolling coal, vw's, Audi and European fords almost always do that when they've a few miles under the hood.
