In 1993, Marseille became the first French team to win the Champions League, beating Fabio Capello’s Milan 1-0. But it emerged shortly after that Marseille, in their 1-0 win over Valenciennes on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, had bribed opposition players to ensure that victory.
Callum Rice-Coates and Philippe Fenner tell the story of what happened.

So you are giving a million to someone that won the Tour de France cheating because he gave informations about another guy that won several Tour de France cheating. In the Lance Armstrong case there were loads of evidence, so much that Lance himself "came clean" and told the truth. And then floyd gets a million 8 years after ? Yeah, I mean Italian football was chock-full of bribery of referees in the 80s and basically nothing was done about it. They tried to clean it up by assigning referees for matches at random but Hellas Verona ended up winning the league in 1985 as opposed to Juventus/Milan/Inter so that solution was quickly discarded.
Marseille's case was the only one uncovered so only them get the flack for it, but football was run on corruption and bribery for decades without any consequence.

I think they were told either you police it properly or we (the various governments) will. FIFA. the Prem etc. (like the NFL) employ dozens of former law enforcement officers, spooks, ex military etc. and are always on the lookout for suspicious betting activity. Which means the old way of fixing games is much, much harder. However, there's absolutely nothing stopping say - the Prem or even FIFA and the WC from fixing the matches themselves. Three things:
    1. Glassman’s career was destroyed by his refusal to accept the bribe and speaking up against the omerta. He never found another top level team, allegedly due to Tapis’s influence. It’s one of the saddest fates of French football.
    2. The most interesting part of this weird story is that nobody won the league (still called Division 1) that year. Second place PSG was owned by TV operator Canal+ back then, who owned the broadcasting rights to the league. Canal+ had agreed with Tapie behind the scenes to create a rivalry between PSG and OM (even thought there was none historically) during those years, and played up the opposition to the point of fostering genuine hatred between fans of the opposing teams in order to boost audiences and increase the appeal of the League. When the scandal happened, Canal+ got worried that the entire Provence region would boycott the (paid) channel and blocked PSG from claiming the title, forcing the league to declare the entire season vacated.
    3. Bernès is pronounced Berness’

We didn't lose a game all tournament and all season mate. That was the famous unbeaten year we nearly had a quadruple and matched Celtics Lisbon Lions.
Had we don't the tournament we would have had automatic entry into the following seasons as champions. Instead we had to quify again and failed. The season after that (94/95) UEFA gave out automatic group stage qualification for the very first time and only selected the 4 big leagues and some chosen other big nations.... England got a spot despite ALL their cha pio a for the 3 previous seasons (91/92 was the European cup but UEFA trialled a group stage in that season) failing to reach the group stages of the tournament. So England got a group stage spot for free, without earning it while Rangers, now in their 2nd group stage of the first 3 seasons of the Champions league, still had to go through qualifiers.

My friend, you should check out that season and Rangers form from the qualifiers to how close they came to the final. That was the inaugural season of the Champiins league and all 8 founding group 'league' stage clubs were given a star around the Champions league logo. It was just champions back then also. No seedings, no automatic qualification for some nations, no coefficients etc. Just straight and fair.
The very first Champions league had No German, No Slanish and No English teams qualify for it, imagine that now lol.

We could also add the testimony of Marc Fratani, ex-assistant of Bernard Tapie at that time. He recently declared that there was a whole set of measures that Tapie and Bernès used to favor Marseille between 1988 and 1993. Bribing referees was one of them and Marc Fratani even took part to those bribes occasionally, making sure to leave the money in a safe place for the referee to pick it up the day following the game. They were not doing this on each game though, because it was costly and they didn't want to take the risk to do it too often.
They also used syringe injections into the other teams water bottles at the Vélodrome. They were injecting Haldol into them before the games, which is an anaesthetic.
Fratani is not in good terms with Tapie anymore now, which is why he revealed all of this to the media last year. I don't know what took him so long to do that but I'm also pretty sure that Marseille wasn't the only club in the world to use such methods back in the day or even nowadays. But as it is said in the video, such actions are hard to prove when it happens.
