In 2005 Germany was exposed to its own match-fixing scandal. A cup upset between a Bundesliga team and a lower-ranked side revealed a sport-gambling syndicate, and sentenced a professional referee to time in prison.
All on the eve of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Seb Stafford-Bloor writes, Henry Cooke illustrates.

The scandal has still effect on the German fan culture.
When you are not happy with the referees decisions, the whole stadium shouts "Hoyzer, Hoyzer, Hoyzer...".
Way to make a name for yourself 🤣🤣
Thanks for the info!
So they'll accuse criminal activity because they don't like something that happened lmao
Soon they'll chant, "Taylor, Taylor, Taylor," in England.
@@tutin4090 It's only illegal because they didn't bet in the arranged winner, they should inform the population about arranged winners so everyone can get rich
Btw., calling a referee "Hoyzer" in Germany is a red card offense.
What if the referee is really corrupt though?
If he is corrupt he'll still give you a red card
@@pierrethetrex6106 not if your team paid him
@@lucbalr If the team paid him, why would they complain in the first place?
@@mikgriffen not corrupt enough for the money
And ever since then calling a referee a Hoyzer in German football will get you a fine
That's hilarious
true lol
If he was getting paid 3k a game, getting paid an extra 67k over 8 months and risking your career and prison time seems so silly
Thinking the same thing. His cut was not worth the risk, imho.
it's probably all they could pin on him, I imagine it was a lot more in reality
@@josephperrett8366 oh, ive no doubt that he made more elsewhere, but this particular example still seems little return for great risk.
Don’t forget about the flat screen TV.
but the thing is he got caught, imagine how much he would have made if he had just worked 3 years. The betting would have been increased by 10 fold by then and his cut would have been massive. Imagine if he was active during world cup. He would have been shitting gold to this day.
Peak Croatians running a betting syndicate out of a cafe in germany lmao
There is a song by Croatian rappers on German and one of the lines is "Balkan Mafia Kontrolliert Bundesliga" haha
First I’d ever heard about this. Mad that this was going on around the same time as Calciopoli, goes to show we’re hardly “holier than thou” in European football. Great video, very informative 👍
Man, Calciopoli was several magnitude worse than this. You can't simply compare them and think they were equally bad
@@littlechemie5425 tbh i agree. Hamburg were a Bundesliga team and even with 10 men should have easily won.
It's bad but not calciopoli level. The stupidity was that Juventus fixed the last game of the season and got punished the most.
@@Micfri300 like Marseilles in '96
@@Micfri300 I don't think he was implying that it was necessarily on the same level.
....he then moved to England and legally changed his name to Anthony Taylor 🤣
😂
3:35 One of those he tried to recrute Is Felix Zwayer. There are still alligations against him, but the DFB protects him. Zwayer now is an international FIFA referee.
wouldnt surprise me, that clown makes so many bad decision whenever he officiates BVB games for example( and others too). He and Brych are german refs i really dont like.
And there are still shady people in the DFB. They kicked out the wrong person with Fritz Keller. The poison that kills the DFB are still in. Namely Rainer Koch and Peter Peters.
Zwayer actually even got a ban for it, it just didn't seem to matter in the long term because he's had a lot of allies along his career. It's insane how he ever made it to the Bundesliga in the first place, but the fact he's done international Tournaments and the Champions League as a matchfixer says everything about modern football that you need to know.
@@michiadams He didn't get banned. They lessened his punishment (a six month ban) due to his cooperation with the DFB.
@@dzemilmehovic5271 Yeah. I was about to say Brych. A very mediocre referee that for some reason still gets nominations for major international games.
Hoyzer: do match fixing
Calciopoli: interesting
Loving this comic book type of editing, looks like you're telling a story
Definitely keep it up when its more "story based" videos
A referee in 2. Bundesliga got €3,000 per match? That's what I call a lot of money for little work!
AND cup games, HSV was a "1st" Bundesliga team, for example...
I still remember when the investigation was taking place. This was the first time I saw a scandal at this level of football in my life. I was following up live updates on Goal website like a madman. This brings back nostalgia. Another top video from a top channel ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
If only we knew what was coming next, with Calciopoli
lol...good old days
love your videos bro♥️
Goal used to be an amazing website, the good ol days
@@NajashiProductions i remember when they used to be "SoccerAge", with their green color theme, before rebranding as Goal
The sentences handed out seem a bit odd to me... so the guys who organised the whole thing and did the bribing got at most 35 months, but Hoyzer got over 2 years, even after helping the police?
Maybe they spend good money to buy good lawyers or admitted some information to get the reduced time. Hoyzer would probably get 10+ years if he didn't cooperate. But I do agree, I also think they got light jail time compared to Hoyzer.
Pawns will always get handed longer sentences because they don't have the money/status
35 months = 2 years 11 months, so they got a slightly longer sentence than Hoyzer. They were crooks but so was Hoyzer but he also broke his vow to uphold the game so he does deserve a longer sentence and if he hadn't cooperated it would have been much longer. You cant get rid of all crooks but without inside help they cant influence games
@@EvilFinian yea but its understandable for someone who isn't making much money to do anything for a big paycheck
Well 35 months is more than 2 years.
In Brazil, something "simillar" happened, and it was in 2005 too on the Campeonato Brasileiro, aka Brasileirão. It is a BIG case that you could do a video of.
Many people in Germany say Felix Zwayer, an international referee, was participating in that scandal and should not be a Ref in Bundesliga.
I watched this match, with my dad. The way he cussed in my presence. 💔😂😂😂 I was four then, and he never cussed
Sure you did
same, although I was fourteen. People tend to forget that this game absolutely ruined the careers of Mpenza and Toppmöller (HSV manager at the time)
Reminds me of a scandal that happened in Brazil, also in 2005, aka "The whistle scandal", in which games had to be replayed. There was a great coverage of the media, and in the end, some refs admitted receiving money to influence games. It would be a great idea for a video imo
One of the refs through away his career for £300. May be the worst decision ever made
No he didn‘t, he‘s still officiating games today as he served his suspension early in his career
@@AdrianSFS no way? How is that even allowed
@@vincentproductions8963 felix is still a referee, and had a trash game today on der klassiker
Glad you guys went more in-depth with this scandal since you mentioned it in your match-fixing video!
Straight away looked up the match to see the highlights
Congrats on one million you deserve it !
Why am I noticing a pattern of host nation scandals a year before their respective World Cup tournaments?
Extremely informative, never came across such informative video !
I am sure im not the only one who has very little memory or any at all about this, love that TIFO are shining a light on it and teaching us about the lesser known football scandals
Never knew about this, very interesting indeed. Thanks for the video!
Germany - 2005
Italy - 2006
Turkey - 2011
Is there any such match fixing scandals on Premier League, Ligue 1 and La Liga?
There might be but we all know how powerful Premier League clubs are.
Doubtful that it would ever reach the top levels of the sport. No player would ever participate because they are already exceptionally wealthy and the referees know they wouldn't get away with it because of the level of scrutiny.
maybe not in the top tier of football but certainly in the lower tiers this is very possible
there was the Brasileirão scandal in 2005
There was the time there were a bunch of power failures at EPL games back in the day.
I wonder what happened to the referee in the Chelsea-Barcelona game in 2009?🤔
That game was/is to big to be investigated. Imagine an Uefa referee in a champions league semifinal being investigated for match fixing.Ovrebo got paid hugely , and he will never face any consequence for it.
Great job Tifo. i would love you to make a video about the story of Larbi Benbarek. The only player Pele has admitted was better than himself.
I wonder if Ballack called Ovrebo a Hoyzer in that Chelsea Barcelona game
Alternate title: when refree got a red card in football
I didn't know anything about this either. The punishments weren't very harsh were they? Can see them being much of a deterrent.
The "Subpoena" brothers, amirite?
👉🚪
I want that comic
Kinda feel bad for the referee that didn't accept the offer but didn't report them
Anthony Taylor needs to be investigated
I guess Bellingham watched this video before the match against Bayern the other day.
Before Tom henning overbo was bribed by pep guardiola in 2009
Hoyzer might be lying about his cut or he is dumb for risking his career for that much. His fascination with the rich life then cheating for less than six figures? *confused*
Sounds like something from the Netflix series 'Dogs of Berlin'. Worth a watch if you haven't seen already.
the assistant who took the 300€ is felix zwayer he's still a referee in germany and for the uefa go figure..
This is very informative, actually refrees caused problems all over the game, the most underestimated ones if this is the right word, they could control games and fans can't do anything with it
This is making me question that 1-0 Arsenal victory over Norwich now.
saw this first on optus sports (paid subscriber). glad to see it here.
Flat screen TV in 2005!?
Emile Mpenza! Man that was a different generation of Belgian players…
It's pronounced "Hoitzer" not "Hoizer" as one might assume with English Zs... FYI.
So how exactly got the British police involved instead of the German one? :D ( 3:03 )
hey tifo you might find Braga - Fenerbahce Europa League match on 17.03.2016 interesting
A very similar scandal happened in Brazil in 2005, the difference here is that not only a referee was involved, but Cotinthians, who was national champion that year. Other difference is that in Brazil nobody was punished and the club involved on corruption was given the championship anyway. Brazil is the paradise for corruption practices
Do the Juventus scandal!
Does anyone have a link to that match?
I do not find a match when looking for it on english
most undeserving comeback of all time
must have been a little confusing that the main offenders had the surname supina
Chelsea vs Barcelona
I wonder what is that referee doing after all these years
Just living, I guess. It's been 16 years tho, he could be dead
He became a player in 2011 after his ban from playing was lifted and later was a manager for several amateur clubs.
1:40 Bakugo? Those explosion thingys on his mask lol
There is match fixing in every league. You just don’t hear about it.
Robert Hoyzer.I remember this name if we talk about German match fixing scandal
Ty for the vid. My life was a complete mess at the time so I missed this scandal.
Edit...
Now I'm just a mess 😂
Please do a video on how good is our lord lingardinho.
03:08 but why got he arrested in the UK by a British police men, lol?
I think Referees need a Raise.

C’mon Effzeh!
You say "the Athletic brings you the best sports journalism in the world", but that isn't the case though, is it? It's second best - to Tifo : )
German football have a lot of fixing scandal. Schalke and some Bundesliga club in late 70s, this, and recently stories
Today I learned that the German word for "Donaghy" is "Hoyzer".
Milan Sapina? More like Milan Subpoena amirite
@Tifo Football after today's Champions league match between Atletico Madrid and FC Porto you have more content to investigate xD
What a robbery!!
Cheating doesn't pay off.
who knew football is corrupt. i am just waiting for the qutar world cup
3:03 clearly drew a policeman but they looked too British so you thought, hmmm, how about a moustache, yeah moustaches are German, give him a moustache
Good morning I hope this finds you well I am a huge fun of your CZcams channel. I am based in Kenya. Which app do you use to develop your awesome videos? I am planning to start a CZcams channel. Please help a brother. Thank you.
They propably don't use a smartphone app. I could imagine they use a drawing programm and a video editing programm. Probably the Adobe suite.
@@fleetenkieker3445 thank you
This is why there's no bundesliga in football manager
BVB vs Fc Bayern ref
German second division refs earned money in 2004 than premier league refs today
I'd love too the the croation blokes betting odds final result 4-2 when one team is 2-0 down
You could put a quid on that and put the kids through school
Ahh Croatians, they're good in everything :D
Good history of the German cup and German football :)

Yet again we see crime resulting from economic inequality. Maybe if we actually tried to substantively change people's lives, they wouldn't turn to crime to get the same thing.
Yes he was getting paid 3 grand A WEEK to work essentially an hour and a half. Such hardship for the man, how could he ever have survived in such poverty working such a gruelling job.
It isn't relevant in this context.
