No, the vast majority of those aren't true fans. They're casual Prequel haters masquerading as "true fans". Most only like the original trilogy and even then, just one film in the original trilogy - Ep. 5 -TESB. They only like[d] small bits and pieces of the entire STAR WARS universe. They treat[ed] STAR WARS like a salad bar, cherry picking only the small bits they like and ignoring/discarding all the rest.
So they all banded together and followed people like the ones who made this film and other STAR WARS know-nothing casuals who had a loud criticizing "voice" on public platforms like CZcams _[looking at you RedLetterMedia, Collider, John Campea etc. etc.]_ and they began the whole "Let's get rid of Lucas!" chant/mantra and were the ones who rolled out the red carpet to Di$ney, welcoming them with open arms.
They were told long before that getting rid of Lucas and bullying him into selling off his creations to outsiders was going to be a monumental mistake but, they didn't listen. They just got drunk on the full blown hype they created for "Di$ney Wars" and now, they're the ones crying about how bad STAR WARS has become in such a short time...
All while *NEVER* admitting _[but still silently realizing]_ that *THEY,* not the *_TRUE_* fans who stood by Lucas _[despite his flaws and failures with the Prequels],_ were and still are the *ONLY* ones responsible for the demise and death of STAR WARS...

In a sick way, shows you how obsessive Star Wars fans are with their fandom, even more so when in this case the original trilogy films are the core and foundation of everything they love about the franchise.
Other than the holocaust comparission, the other ultimate sick and bad extreme is "George Lucas raped our childhood" claim. Dude, out of the millions of passionate Star Wars fans in the world I bet that several thousands of them suffered of being sexually raped or abused at some point in their lives and they won't dare to compare at all the pain and trauma caused from it to whatever disgust that the Special Edition changes made them felt, even more so if they happened to be victims of it at their childhood.

It’s just history repeating itself. Fans back then were begging for the og cuts. Fans now are begging for the sequels to be erased from canon.
The thing is though, the fans who want the OG cuts are right. It’s basic film preservation. Not releasing them is almost like erasing history. It’s fine to have new cuts of movies (Ridley Scott has like five different cuts of Blade Runner, and most people like his newest one the best!) but to forbid the public from seeing an original work of art that inspired fans for twenty years (that’s long enough for a Star Wars fan from ‘77 to have a kid and raise them on the original cuts too) is borderline dystopian.

The prequels were hated at first, but today adults who grew up on the prequels adore it and take it seriously because it's a part of their identity as a nerd.
But prequel fans now hate the sequels in the same way. It's like poetry, it rhymes! And one day soon adults who grew up on the sequels will praise them and say they're masterpieces.

This documentary is honestly shameful. George is a masterful creative and a directorial genius. It’s honestly sad how people reacted to the prequels. While not perfect films, the story they told was cohesive, in-depth, and fascinating. Not to mention the groundbreaking effects (also, each individual prequel has more practical effects than the entire original trilogy combined) that revolutionized cgi and filmmaking. Some Star Wars fans are really the most pretentious and self absorbed people; being angry with a creator for altering their work post-release. Every creator in history has changed their art, from paintings to novels to films. Only SW fans complain though. The special editions are the films and the prequels are phenomenal. Wish fans could’ve seen that back then and maybe we wouldn’t be stuck with the sequels.

@@dbreiden83080 yes, the prequels told a strong, clear and cohesive story. The plot was very focused and evident with no major contrivances through all three epsiodes as we watch the Phantom Menace slowly rise to power while seducing the chosen one to the dark side; dismantling the Jedi order and republic in his path. I have never watched the Clone Wars television show and I was alive to see all three prequels release into theaters. Only a vocal minority of the fanbase really didn’t like the films; largely years after the fact due to CZcamsrs like RLM stating blatantly obvious lies while also being too dumb to even comprehend the basic outline of the plot. Actual intelligent critics like Roger Ebert thoroughly enjoyed the prequels upon their releases. Sorry George actually told a compelling story with themes and motifs; rather than just re-telling the same story over again with plot redundancies such as “palpatine has somehow returned.” The prequels aren’t as well made as the original trilogy, but they have 1000x the amount of heart, character, and creativity than the Disney sequels could even dream of.

@@dbreiden83080 you’re being a bit biased and pretentious. The reviews were simply not “dogshit”, they were largely mixed. If you watch the out of theater reactions the vast majority are positive or mixed; with only a few extreme negative responses. The large portion of people I’ve spoken to or seen reviews of either love them or don’t mind them. Similarly, if you watch reviews of the original trilogy, there were many who had the same negative perspectives. “It’s all special effects! No real acting or story! Dry and terrible dialogue.” The negative responses were just highlighted far more often due to social media and the internet. At least the prequels, whether you like them or not, did not hamper or disrespect the original trilogy or characters that came before. Lucas absolutely did his best to maintain a cohesive story throughout the six films.
Also, the point of the first episode isn’t to focus on Obi-Wan. It’s entirely to focus on the dual of the fates and Anakin’s start to his journey. Qui-Gon is a wise and intelligent Jedi who, as we see, isn’t on the council due to his differing perspectives on the force and training. He’s even willing to completely disobey the order to take on Anakin as his apprentice. It’s also clear from the get go that Obi-Wan sides with the order and not his own master; disliking Anakin immediately. “Why do I sense we have picked up another pathetic life form.” “The boy is dangerous they all sense it why can’t you?” It’s called the phantom menace and the final battle is the dual of the fates due to the fact that palpatine is slowly gaining power in the senate to eventually take over; while if Qui-Gon dies, Anakin will absolutely fulfill his destiny of turning to the dark side. Had Qui-Gon survived, Anakin would’ve been allowed to use his emotions and attempt to save the people he loved like his mother and padme. It is Obi-Wan’s/the Jedi’s distaste/distrust for anakin, Palpatine’s now fatherly role for anakin in light of Qui-Gon passing, and the lack of the Jedi’s sympathy and acceptance of emotions like love that causes Anakin to fall to the dark side. Not to mention how amazing the underwater gungan city is, how awesome Naboo is, the entire Pod Racing sequence, and getting to see the Jedi order/Coruscant in their prime. I can accept if you don’t enjoy them but they’re genuinely compelling films and stories.

This documentary is a really interesting time capsule and look into a moment in pop culture and Star Wars history. Although there were toxic elements of the fandom back then, I get where these people are coming from. It’s easy to look back at this now and think they were being whiny but it makes sense to me why they were upset by what Lucas was doing at the time. He made significant alterations to the films and refused to give fans DVD/Blu-ray releases of the unedited versions. I also understand why The Phantom Menace broke a lot of hearts. Seeing that movie for the first time as an adult who grew up with the OT and seeing it as a child experiencing Star Wars for the first time is a COMPLETELY different experience. As a 2000s kid who grew up with Prequel/Clone Wars era, my experience With Star Wars is very different from these people, but I get where they are coming from and think it’s interesting to hear.

This was toxic hate before it was a media buzzword. This was the sharknado of prequel hate that fans had to endure because hating on prequels was considered cool by media and internet of the time, that anyone trying to defend the prequels got shouted down and name-called into oblivion. There was no "You're just upset because your expectations were subverted" excuse accepted. In complete irony, it was considered acceptable to hate on SW and ppl like George Lucas but today, a movie like "The People vs Kathleen Kennedy" would NEVER be allowed or accepted due to "misogyny" and such. Even Simon Pegg - who now calls the SW fandom "very toxic" is here gleefully hating on the prequels and ANYONE who likes them.
People like Mr Lucas, Mr Best, Mr Christensen, Mr Lloyd were considered "acceptable targets" and told to "man up and accept criticism" but media and twitter mobs rush to defend the characters like Rey, denouncing ANYONE who has anything negative to say about say, Rey, media quick to scream "misogyny" and such. Think if this film was made directed at Disney and Kathleen Kennedy, how much it would be denounced by media and twitter mobs but back in 2010, it was considered perfectly okay to attack like this. What a difference over a decade has made in what and who is acceptable to "critique" and what is considered to be "hate".

The filming technology and CGI progressed so much at that point that a lot of the work already got done (You know, usage of CGI and green screen in order to place actors in fantastic environments without going anywhere). A lot of the film making process got digitalized, you have to remember that, he can no longer rely on the old methods that he learned in college which is likely why he doesn't edit himself anymore. You also have to remember he was 55 years old when he directed the Phantom Menace, and was at the time the head of Lucasfilm. So he organized a lot of the business ventures and everything like that, film studios have a lot of paperwork to do to organize contracts, call in actors, etc. which is why Rick McCallum was so important to help him alleviate the stress of all that. Add to that the constantly whining fans that didn't want to see his creative vision and constantly shat on him, the actors, even on the efforts of the rest of the crew, the fact that he wouldn't get to spend a lot of with his own family while making the films, as well as worries that the hate for his movies would get so large he would start losing money and lose jobs for all his employees, and you can see why he would wish to stop making movies and to sold the franchise to the corporation with the largest pockets in the entertainment world.
