George Lucas Calls Disney “White Slavers” in Charlie Rose interview

  • George Lucas has criticized the latest installment of “Star Wars,” the series he created, in an interview with Charlie Rose, describing the film as too “retro” for his taste and jokingly comparing the Walt Disney Company, which bought the rights to the franchise in 2012, to “white slavers” who had bought his children.
The hourlong interview, broadcast on Dec. 25 and released online this week, focused on Mr. Lucas’s legacy, which was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors this month. But he was harsh in criticizing the film industry for focusing on profit over storytelling.
At one point he said that filmmakers in the Soviet Union had more freedom than their counterparts in Hollywood, who, he maintained, “have to adhere to a very narrow line of commercialism.”
Mr. Lucas appeared particularly unhappy with the direction the “Star Wars” franchise has taken since he sold the rights to it, along with Lucasfilm, his company, to Disney for $4 billion. He compared the sale to a breakup and a divorce.
“These are my kids. All the Star Wars films,” he said. “I love them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them.”
He added, trailing off with a laugh: “And I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and. …”
Mr. Lucas said that he decided to sell his company in part because his filmmaking interests had changed and that the more experimental movies he wanted to make would not be financially successful enough to ensure the health of the company and the well-being of its employees.
Still, he said he had begun working on another “Star Wars” film before the sale, including preparing story treatments and “working with a writer.” But, he said, Disney was not “that keen to have me involved.”
“They decided they didn’t want to use those stories,” he said. “They decided they were going to do their own thing. So I decided, ‘Fine.’ ”
The film that Disney made, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its release on Dec. 18 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.
But not from Mr. Lucas. On Mr. Rose’s show, he criticized the producers and writers of the latest film for emphasizing familiar elements of his previous work - some of which he said had issues - over innovation and storytelling of their own.
“The first three movies had all kinds of issues,” he said of the original trilogy, which was released between 1977 and 1983. “They looked at the stories and said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ All I wanted to do was tell a story of what happened. It started here, and it went there.”
“They wanted to do a retro movie,” he continued. “I don’t like that. Every movie, I worked very hard to make them different, make them completely different with different planets, different spaceships, to make it new.”
Getting over “Star Wars” is like getting over a lost love, Mr. Lucas said. He told Mr. Rose that he tried to approach it the way one would approach the end of a relationship, by focusing on the future instead of the past.
“You have to put it behind you, and it’s a very, very, very hard thing to do,” he said. “But you have to just cut it off and say, ‘O.K., end of ballgame, I have to move on.’ And everything in your body says, ‘Don’t, you can’t.’”
On Thursday, Mr. Lucas apologized for his “white slavers” remark and backtracked on his criticism of Disney.
“I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize,” he said in a statement released to several trade publications.
“I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of J.J. and Kathy,” he said, referring to J. J. Abrams, the “Force Awakens” director, and Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president.

Letting one of your daughters get well over 200 lbs is bad parenting 101, specially when you've got unlimited money and you've supposedly retired to take care of your children. Regarding Amanda, her career choice was... pro fighting, getting arms like those of a truck driver in the process. Say what you want about "chasing your dreams", but that reeks of daddy issues. And yes, adoption as a single parent is a selfish decision, one incidentally taken by many billionaires who think no one's good enough to raise children alongside them.
So yeah, "I want to be remembered as a great dad" is a great answer in an interview, but he being one in the real world? Not very likely, really.

@@BeardLAD You’re seeing things that aren’t there my friend. Almost everybody doesn’t realize that it wasn’t just all the extra scenes and cgi added in the special editions, but also all the effects that have aged so well actually weren’t like that originally. Everything got massively enhanced and upscaled to look much better, but nobody ever talks about those changes because they assumed it was always like that since you were less cynical as a kid and didn’t notice all the flaws. Lucas actually did release the original editions on DVD once but with all the weird outdated effects. The truth is every single version of the Star Wars movies that have ever existed are available to watch. So what you actually want is a version that doesn’t exist, a version that has none of the changes Lucas made except for the ones you didn’t even know were changes. Lucas is the arbiter of Star Wars. It’s his life, his passion, his story. He has the right to change his movies however he wants. And before you pretend this is about preserving film history or whatever, this is something big directors do all the time with DVD releases. People just notice it with Star Wars because they’re fanatic about it. Also, Lucas made just as many changes with the prequels but you probably don’t even know or care since you don’t like those movies of course. So this isn’t about Lucas making the original versions unavailable, nor is it about preserving film history. So what is this really about? I think this is about you wanting to recapture a certain nostalgic feeling you got when you saw the movies as a kid, but you never once considered that this was also about George Lucas and the vision that he wants to tell. So when the films aren’t exactly identical to the ones from your childhood, you think something is wrong and even try to make believe that he tainted the originals somehow. But in reality, all the wonder and imagination from the originals are still there in the prequels in spades and the originals were merely improved to age better with time. You’re just not as open minded as when you were a kid. Nothing could’ve ever met your impossibly high expectations of rekindling the magic of your childhood. And of course millions of people have shared this same lapse in logic about Lucas as you, and a disgusting cottage industry has arose on the internet in the last 20 years dedicated to demonizing George Lucas simply for making movies you didn’t like, which led to him ultimately selling the movies to Disney and more or less retiring from filmmaking. And look what we got: creatively bankrupt, hodgepodge, cookie cutter at best, soulless, counterfeits of films, mass produced by a committee that studies analytics to decide what’s the most ‘accessible for general audiences’ so that they can make enough money. So much better right? So much better than the prequels which were oozing with creativity and beautifully impeccable landscapes of planets they go to in each movie, with all the same rich, timeless themes about fathers and sons, the struggle between the temptation and balance of the soul, the duloagy of life, and there always being another side to the story (the prequels of course being the ultimate other side to the story), that were present in the originals. Lucas never changed, you did. (Forgive me if I made any assumptions about your opinions on Star Wars but this comment wasn’t necessarily aimed at you specifically but at the entire culture of people who disrespect George Lucas in spite of him making some of the best movies of all time).

Thats what a producer does.

I actually agree with George Lucas here. When he talks about award shows being about being shows and less about the actual artists that win the awards. I think this is why a lot of artists stopped going entirely. These shows just put these events together not to actually celebrate art, but to get views and pump out the most expensive long commercials every 5 minutes. I felt the host was quite rude a number of times telling George Lucas how he should perceive shows and himself, based on wealth and awards. A lot less conversions about his artistic and story telling side, which I'm far more interested in then conversions about gloat. It seems George doesn't really like talking about that either. It reminds me of Ed Bradley asking Bob Dylan how he felt about having Rolling Stone's "best song of all time," and he just scowled and said, well they change that every week. He didn't even show up for the Nobel Prize. I think when you're at the stratospheric level of Lucas or Dylan, and you see how your work permeates the cultural world, awards _would_ seem silly. Awards are important when they help small and middle level artists immensely, giving them exposure and an audience. If you not only have the biggest audience already, but you've literally changed the culture - nothing is greater than that. No form of recognition. You don't want to offend the awards people paying court to you, especially because you don't actually think you're above them, and thay means you can't be honest and say their praise is an inferior form of recognition and mostly uncomfortable and tedious. It's a hard one to feel sympathy for because it's a bit unimaginable, but I can at least understand it.

After seeing what Disney did the sequels, I can 100% understand where Lucas is coming from. Star Wars thrived because Lucas went against all the Hollywood culture. He didn't care about the money, the corporations, the pointless red tape, the bureaucracy. Lucas just wanted to make a good movie born form nothing but pure imagination that would touch the hearts of audiences everywhere and he succeeded.
But everything Disney did was the exact opposite of Lucas. They are a soulless cooperation who were bureaucratic to the core. They didn't care about the story, the character, the legacy, the plan, they just cared about the money and their movies are everything Lucas's Star Wars were not. He wanted to preserve their jobs and to make sure that to whoever he sells the company, it wouldn't go bankrupt. And Disney was a mammoth, it bought other companies, they had a lot of money and influence. Also, Disney had a Star Wars theme park. And Bob Iger was the CEO. The guy who helped Lucas with the Young Indiana Jones series in the '90s. He trusted him as he trusted Kathleen Kennedy who he knew since the '80s. Lucas was always true to himself and honest. I think he didn't realise that there are no "friendships" in business.

Movies, (or even news) a lot of them are so cliche and dumbed down and over simplified portrayals that they break from a consistent representation of society . People think everyone who is muslim might want to kill them if they're at an airport, they think every pedophile is a serial killer than wants to kill their children, and is a white old male. They think everyone on the internet is trying to kill you , but if you meet them in person, they're somehow more or less safe than if you meet them on the internet, as if its a separate set of human beings from a parallel universe.

You need to look at and understand his early work. He is creative and experimental, clearly intelligent and understands that there is a level of popcorn, bullshit, manipulation and control in the industry he wants to work in (film and storytelling) so what he essentially did was play them to the point where he was wealthy and successful enough to then say - f**k it - I'll do what I want now. And don't forget - government and corporations run the media ultimately and don't like free thinkers at all (read John Lennon's back story and the efforts set against him by those running America towards destroying his character and deportation). It's no surprise at all that Lucas has had negative press. So has Mel Gibson (who tried to take them on). And Shia LaBeouf.

George Lucas is a incredibly brilliant man. I think in some ways he's just a regular guy who enjoys being a father, auto enthusiast, mechanic, an affinity for 1950's and 60's Americana.
That's where American Graffiti was inspired from. Absolutely loved that film!
The other side is this creative visionary genius that captured the world's attention and made us all look up at the stars at night and think about a galaxy from a long time ago and far far away. Thank you George Lucas for sharing your imagination and brilliance with the world. I was 7 years old when Star Wars came out and I've been a fan ever since. The world you created captured the hearts and minds of billions of people. You have done exceptionally well!

I'm not saying he is a bad guy but u dont go and change ur fucking movies 10 to 15 years after u make them and then say they r the true movies. Now when my kids watch star wars they have the see all the bad shit in the original movies and trust me they can notice the shit in the movies and their only 7. I can't wait to see if disney will release the originals because they just bought fox which has the rights to them. PS I think disney is going to fuck them up too. Revenge of the jedi would have been a way better movie but george fucked it up to make more money on toys. by the way if u dont know what revenge of the jedi is it is return of the jedi just a changed story and the reason for their falling out. Harrison ford wasn't even happy about the changes that were made because he was supposed to die in revenge of the jedi.

+Bob Bobby The main reason we hate George Lucas is most of his accolades are unwarranted, namely he's the biggest bullshit artist, when crazy George is let loose with no criticism and input from others, not only did we get the mess that is the prequels but way before that it was the confusing mess THX1138 but when he is given limitations and take criticism and input from others we do get great
      film like American Graffiti.
New Hope was successful not because Lucas was some"genius"it because he surrounded himself with talented people namely his three editors that took the mess of his 1st cut and did what they could to fix it,had the original cut went out in '77 the film would have failed.
The Star War sequels are so praised(mostly just Empire)is because Lucas didn't direct them, but crazy George did have to screw with Jedi by changing Wookiees from the original script to stupid Ewoks to sell more toys.I knew the prequels were going to be bad(I just didn't know how bad)because I'm probability the only person that remember that crazy George had given us the garbage that was Howard the Duck.I only saw Episode 1 for free since someone bought me a ticket and after it left a bad taste in my mouth I refused to watch Episode 2 and Episode 3 in the cinema after that.
The original Star Wars Trilogy is a pop culture phenomenon(before crazy George tampered with it)and still is but to have people say the films are flawless are only kidding themselves(seriously did no one notice the battery cable going up Alec Guinness's(Obi Wan)arm to his Light Saber during the Darth Vader fight in New Hope it in all versions even the Special Editions, even crazy George missed it and once you see it you can't un-see it,I bet everybody missed it.)

It took me a long time but I think I finally understand. It's not about the awards. Sometimes you just have an idea and you have to make it. It compels you. That's what it's about. That's why George didn't want to focus on making "popular" movies. He did care about his friends going "wow", though. His films were art, unlike any we've seen in a long while and art is meant to invoke feelings and reactions and so many more indescribable things. That's why it mattered when his friends reacted to them. They understood the movies because they were fellow artists and when they said "wow", it wasn't cold and professional, it's because they appreciated his art. I'm lost for words and my respect for George is immeasurable.

My mother bought me so much Star Wars toys that I used to sit in my room and make up mock battles on my bedroom carpet with them. I can still remember those days today in my old houses. Nearly every stick I found in my backyard with my friends we made mock lightsaber battles. This guy made many kids across the globe happy and allowed us kids to use our imagination for all these cool battles in person. When Episode 1,2,3 were released I was still hooked on the franchise as much as my childhood. I still absolutely love Star Wars. Unfortunately as I've grown older I've seen the flaws in the prequels such as the bad dialogue and all, but that hasn't shifted my perspective for the franchise.
