  • In this video we take a look at very cheap and simple solar! I am a fan of tools and always carry a Ryobi drill, jig saw and a skill saw! These work off of a 12V charger. You can get these on Amazon with the links below. Now Ryobi has come out with a 150W inverter with 2 USB ports! If you are carrying these tools anyway, you have a large battery bank! So why not use that power for everything and let them be your power source!

You won’t believe it Bob. I watched this yesterday morning and thought, “that drill battery hook up is such a good idea, but those are expensive and I’ll hold off.” Then I went to Salvation Army later and found a drill with a 15V battery on it for $10, AND a ryobi battery charger right next to it! I shrieked in the store cause it felt like a sign that I’m on the right path. Spirit said, “I got you girl!”

So you have a new generation of admires, and a damned cute one at that. (No this Grandma is not at all prejudice). LOL 😆😂 🤣

Have the 18v car charger, I cut the cigarette plug off and wired a xt90 with a pig tail. Used a wago lever lock to improvise a quick change adapter. I use my diy power box and 60w solar panel to charge my ryobi batteries. I also made a 5v USB to 19v 1a charger for using USB on small solar panels or 5v battery bank.

My wife and I used to live on a boat (for about 7 years). One of the things we always looked for was something that could do more than one job. Limited and small spaces require this kind of thinking. This Ryobi inverter fits that requirement beautifully and helps to justify the initial outlay of expense.

Great video about solar power, thanks for your work. In the video you mention that Amazon sells Ryobi. Actually, you can buy Ryobi off Amazon but you're NOT buying the tool from an authorized source. It's the same as buying the tool from your neighbor. The only Ryobi recognized dealers are Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet. (Full disclosure: I work for Direct Tools Factory Outlet) Those Amazon resellers come into my store and drop $15,000 to $80,000 on product. What those Amazon resellers don't tell you is that their sales DON'T HAVE THE FACTORY WARRANTY. Only the original purchaser, in this case the Amazon reseller, is the warranty holder.

Hey Brah, shout out from Hawaii.
I spent a few years wondering the earth, and I used my car as my power source.
Had a cheap inverter, and a little solar panel for the car battery.
I noticed that the 12 volt auxiliary port was slow to charge even a cell phone.
So I ran a positive and negative wire from the battery to a new auxiliary port.
Bam! That worked like a champ.
Probably would recommend a 15 amp fuse inline with positive cable for good measure.
Great video, love Ryobi, truly a off grid brand.

Have the drill, a tire pump, hot glue gun. Haven't had many carpentry projects while on the road so all the saws stay home. Your chargers and the new inverter could be very handy.

@@johnettew3957 It's called the Thunderbolt "100 Watt Solar Panel Kit" on their site. You also have to buy a 12 volt sealed lead acid battery for the solar panel kit to charge. Then you can connect a power inverter (also sold at harbor freight) to the large lead acid battery and plug in a Ryobi charger to the AC port on the inverter. Then you can charge the ryobi tool batteries individually. It takes a little learning to get it setup and going and isn't easily portable. I'm only really charging the Ryobi batteries and small electronics. I bought some small Ryobi fans which were not the cheapest but we use them in a hurricane. The Ryobi inverter he showed provides one way use a ryobi battery power a small appliance or charge a phone.
I have a lot of Ryobi batteries so what I do is keep 6 of them charged at all times off AC wall power using the Ryobi IntelliPort SUPERCHARGER. So even if I can't recharge them during a power outage at least I have six available to use. Feel free to ask more questions if you are stuck. The solar panel setup in the video which he is using to charge the BEAUDENS Portable Power Station (battery) would be a far simpler setup. He also mentions a Jackery Portable Power station which is a similar type of system.

@@johnndavis7647 you get more use of the sun by charging a big battery than charging your tools. While it might work to charge a drill battery, if you charge a deep cycle battery you could charge multiple tool batteries at once.
Regarding the 12v chargers that plugs into the cigarette lighter, they tend to pull more amps than the lighter socket can give. I have seen many work vans that the outlets are burned out from charging tool batteries.

Ryobe makes an awesome fan in two sizes. It runs on their batteries, and also on a 110V AC extension cord. The less you convert from AC to and from DC the more energy you get. The little black box with only 166 watt hours is not enough to run a CPAP machine much longer than an hour.

I'm sure a smaller TV would run longer. I don't have an RV, but was doing the test just to see how long I could get weather info and other news in a power outage situation. That little Ryobi inverter is limited , but also compact and quite handy to have around. I use it quite a bit for many tasks. The portable 2 speed fan that they market is also well worth the price. Hello yes we carry Ryobi everything lol. We use the fan all night. If you turn the fan around you can use to pull the hot air out of the van. We recharge by using solar and plug into our inverter. We love love love the Ryobi line of tools. Stay safe from your Aussie nomad friends 🤗🤗🤗

BEAUDENS Portable Power Station is truly excellent. I also have Ryobi 18v tools and will be getting the adapter. I have 100w panels and an all in one charge controller with outlets. Good setup. I plug mine in in the back of the truck when going on road trips and I always have full batter for the hotel or what ever.

  • @verohandymike

That would be a good setup for someone who doesn't need a lot and any old solar panel they can get their hands on would run the battery charger. They could get the LED bulbs that plug into USB, there are some now the same size as a regular light bulb that put out just as much light. I'd also recommend a fan that uses USB or at least an adapter as it will pull less amps for the same amount of breeze. It'll charge cell phones and a laptop too.

I used a Ryobi inverter and mostly 4ah batteries last fall when I lost power due to an ice storm and was somewhat disappointed. We were only getting something like 4 or 5 hours just powering a LED lamp (60 watt replacement size I think) and an occasional phone top off. I more recently tried it to power a wifi security camera; the battery and inverter both got a bit warm and I don't think I would have got 2 hours out of a single battery.
On the other hand, I used a 7.5ah Ego battery with their 150W inverter and was able to power my CPAP all night (humidity turned off) and had unknown power left in it. It also powered the aforementioned camera overnight with no noticeable heat. That said, I wouldn't recommend anyone going out to buy the Ego battery, charger, inverter for van life only, as they are very proud of their batteries especially and a person could get more bang for their buck via other means. However, if you have one or more of their batteries, that may be an option.

I've got the same setup, but with the Milwaukee batteries and the m18 top-off. It does 175 watts continuous on the ac port, and a USB-C port that can charge a laptop.

Ryobi One+ is a great tool set. Great batteries, lots of tools you can buy only the tools you need. I already had the weed wacker and blower for my house. When I started RVing, I got the air compressor/inflator, and battery fan. My next purchases for my RV are the inverter and big flashlight. (On a side note, if the batteries stop taking a charge, there are CZcams videos on how to fix them.)
I don't ever use a cigarette 12 Volt charger for my batteries because it takes to long. I have the normal plug in charger and when I run my generator, I make sure all my devices, power banks, and Ryobi batteries are plugged in and charging. Great video with lots of good information.

I can cut straighter lines (by hand, without guides) with my jigsaw than a circular saw. I use the newer "clean cut" blades. (I'll link to an example if requested.) It just takes a little practice. A circular saw blade has a wider kerf, much wider than the actual thickness of the blade. That means a slight tremble in your hand can cause the blade to move left and right, resulting in a rough edge. These newer "clean cut" jigsaw blades have almost no kerf, so the blade can't move directly left or right as easily. And following a straight line, therefore becomes nothing but a matter of practice. Most people don't even try to practice cutting a straight line with a jigsaw because they believe the myth that it is impossible to do so.

Perfect timing. I was saying today that the next two things/systems I need to figure out are power and internet. I’m going to have to watch this again but some great information. P.S. I like the new (at least new to me) editing style. I often speed up CZcams videos to shorten my watch time but this style of editing gets the info out quickly. I even checked my settings to see if I had it set at a faster than normal pace. Thanks again. 😀

Thing about the cigarette lighter plug in ends, they typically are limited to about 15 amps. Clamping straight to the battery usually gets me the best constant connection. Great battery system though. Great video too.

Hey, thanks for making your videos. If your wanting to make a straight cut with your jigsaw, try to find a straight edge and either hold it steady with one hand while cutting with your other or clamp it. For example a straight piece of wood, preferably longer than your cut is going to be. The only inconvenience is you have to compensate where you put the straight edge for the guide. I often cut wood

Plus I am a forever Ryobi tool use :) I have the original Ryobi set in the big grey case : which has the flash light, circular saw, drill, and other saw, charger, also another charger, inflator, spiral saw, brad nailer, stick vacuum all 18v
