I consider portable fans as probably the single most important thing you can do to cool you off in a van or any other vehicle home. The fans are cheap to buy, take up very little room, and don't draw much power and yet can make you feel MUCH cooler.

Thanks for the reviews. From an electrical engineer, something to consider... .8 amps at 5V is not the same as .8 amps at 12V. Electricity should be measured in watts for equal comparison. What i mean is .8 amps at 5v is only 4 watts. .8amps at 12v is 9.6 Watts. The 12v fan draws twice the power and would drain a battery twice as fast.

Yep! When boondocking at Wallyworld, it's nice to block out the noise.
I have a fan sound phone app... Just in case! Ever since having to block out rowdy neighbors can't sleep without white noise.

I bought OPOLAR 9 inch USB Battery Powered Desk Fan from your link and i am using it at work til oct when i will live in an rv...I love how quiet it is!!!...and blows the perfect amount of air.....thank you!

Thanks for the info Bob. A combination of fans is the way go go. I live in my van in the south east and have done very well with portable fans. Because I have a class B I am also able to use bigger appliances and fans, but the most practical have been 12v/usb/battery hand held fans that I got for hurricane preparation. I'll probably do a video on those because they were extremely helpful during Hurricane Irma last year when we lost power and ended up being my go-tos all year particularly when I'm boondocking.

Wow, Bob! Just bought the OPOLAR and it's just as you said, very quiet and does a great job moving that air around. I had to move away from it 'cause it was too windy!! Also bought the smaller clamp on Hopkins and that works well too, but noisy. Still, it moves air around easily and I like the fact that it oscillates too. Good reviews. TKS!! ;D
I travel part time in a minivan that I converted to a one person camper for vacations, etc. I really could not do it without my portable fans that are battery operated. They make an incredible difference especially in a very small space. Thanks for the information on portable fans.
Thanks Bob, "cool" video. I like KC's van. A wonderful evap method is turn on a small fan sleep under a sheet and spritz the sheet with a little sprayer. Guaranteed to work for 2! 💨💏

Thankyou Bob, I was just getting ready to order my fan's. I came to Tenn to pick up my cargo van and I am doing my simple build up here at my sisters instead of the ungodly heat in Fla. I am going with the way you do it. I am just so undecided on roof van placement with my bed longways behind driver seat. I will figure it out.

I agree Bob I have the opolar in my sailboat in fact X4 they are quiet and I love that it connects to usb they do not move as much air as a 120v fan but plenty if you are close
Recently got the camco fan love it. 360° movement moves a ton of air. Does mount hard wired in and has a timer setting. Was 100 bucks. Worth it I think yes lol. Thanks for the great info

I didn't see if anybody added this comment but another thing to consider is NOT just the sound level but the pitch of the sound it emits is important from what your mic picked up I think the Endless Breeze fan noise seemed a LOT more annoying.

Great info and well done. Little thought, if hot air rises, maybe vent out the roof and draw in from as low as possible from shaded area like the canopy or maybe a vent drilled into the floor in a area that wouldn't be close to the stinky stuff. It would have to be tested with a thermometer to know for sure. You have awesome ideas!!!!

My clip on oscillating fan lasted less than 6 months. I loved it while it worked. My daughters USB fan, she hangs from her ceiling. God bless.

A tip for those unaware: 18650 batteries are extremely common for vaping devices. You can visit most any vape shop and buy them for a reasonable price (about 8 to 11 dollars at shops here in Florida)
These shops tend to get brand name, quality batteries, such as LG and Samsung. Just a lil tip

What timing!...I just stopped at Fry's Electronics and bought me a speaker bar for my laptop, on the way back home from one of my many scheduled VA appointments... and, your fans sound great on the new speakers! Lol! Just thought you might like to know that! Good presentation, by the way! The clip-on fan you have is the identical one I had while I was still in the trucking business before retiring in 2015. They are GREAT!...like you showed, just move it anywhere! I also have a fan like the one you use next to your laptop as well. See? Great minds think alike I suppose! Road Pro has a LOT of cool products for truckers, but, will adapt to van dwellers easily as well. What I like is most of their stuff runs on 12 volt! Anyway, travel safe my friend, stay happy, and we'll see you in the next video!

A tiny fan is better than no fan whether used by battery or USB and battery pack, I know as I've camped IN VAN Without A/C in 100 degree temps. its doable and our bodies can acclimatize. If you can buy rechargeable fans so when power is out it will run on charge buying. extra time. Also a wet towel with some air blowing cools you down.
Agree..ive managed all summer mid to high 90s avg 70% humidity with a small usb fan plugged into my schumaker power station..cool towels n a cold spray bottle that I kept in my cooler..so..next summer if i can't afford maxxair fan ill prob get 2 more fans just like the one I have..

I agree. I survived last summer, in Florida, this summer in Tennessee with a clip on fan, and a O2 cool..spray bottle, and cold wash cloths from the mini fridge.
My sister and I bought vans for camping and she bought a portable air conditioner for about $300 to PLUG IN - which in the long run puts her in a position to pay an arm/leg to camp with electricity. I prefer camping OFF GRID, so I spent less than $300 on a portable generator that charges by solar, electric, or battery charger from van. I feel my purchase was the wisest as I can boondock and survive an emergency. Since I live in Texas, we are always dealing with extreme heat, and I can plug my mini fans into the generator running them all night for a week and not use up all of my resources. Small fans work just fine, for personal use. My spouse doesn't care for fans and would rather habitate like a snake, so I'm the only one who needs air blowing in my face when I sleep :) so these mini fans work just fine for me! We also survived 114 degrees in West Texas without an airconditioner (it broke) and we survived with a fan, and wet towels. My 2-cents is to focus first on bare survival efforts first and save those resources for emergencies. Running a huge fan uses up too much energy that you can use for other things like light, cellphone charges, etc. And of course, I'm talking about boondocking. If I were around unlimited electrical power, I would plug in a larger fan/or air conditioner and blast away!
I was actually going to post that info on my blog soon. It was a huge headache getting all the pieces together so I wanted to save others the trouble. I'm a huge prepper (not doomsday crazy) but I do believe S is about to H the FAN (no pun intended) so I focus a lot on OFF GRID stuff. I'll give you a heads-up when I post the info if you want, but I'm pretty happy with my gear. At least if we lost power, I can recharge with solar and I'll have my fans to keep me happy.

Bob, I'm totally addicted to a fan! I want it loud as possible. I take notes on everything you say and so thankful for your videos these past few months. I feel like I've been to rv college. I've traveled my entire life but most of the time, I did it the expensive way. Being alone now, it's not scary at all but I'm definitely making more well thought out plans before deciding what I want to buy and to be gone by Christmas. Thank you for all your help!!! I like that small Opolar one better. It’s small. It’s cute. It’s portable. It’s quiet. Doesn’t make a lot of noise like those big box fans.
I love my 02 fan. I live in Florida, so I have for camping or for hurricanes. I found mine at Goodwill for 7 bucks. Previous person never used it. Whoop whoop. I love bargains.

I picked up a fan from Home Depot called Arctic Cove that I have really enjoyed. It's designed to sit atop a reasonably flat surface or a 5 gallon bucket so you can add a water mist with the built in pump drawing water from the bucket. This thing is a game changer on a really hot day! It uses the same battery as the Ryobi 18 volt tools so if you already have the tools, you should already have spare batteries for your fan. It's a little noisy on high but fairly quiet on low. My only complaint is you can't use an alternative power supply.

Bob - I totally agree with the portable fan theory...we have two USB ones and one is a clip on and I love them both. It will have to do until we get our van completed though (we’re without a house battery) and It moves air pretty well. I am now thinking about getting another small one though. It will move even more air and it sounds like three will work more efficiently with the air flow. Hey where’s Cody. 😜

I am in S. FL and fans will not be enough here in the summer and I cannot drive elsewhere. My health requires AC.
Are there any AC options? In my home I'd cool room with AC then use fans to circulate cooled air for hours but, in a metal van I don't think that will work. What about the portable AC units? Will they drain the batteries? What about using a portable generator?
I like the oscillating tower fans. They take very little room and are powerful.
Had to spend the last week in the Southeast. No A/C. This fan was great. On low, it was wonderfully quiet. The D-cell batteries lasted for 6+ nights.

Thank you very much. Great video. Would also help to move warm air into cool spots in winter. I live in an area that does get warm in summer, but also we have snow and ice in winter. We both work fultime jobs, so it's very important to keep comfortable. Alot of options are always welcome.

Clark great question. I would suggest if you have roof fans to blow the air in on low, to force the heat down.
Oh yes, for sure. Our rig actually has two roof vents we will soon put fantastic fans in. For now we use battery powered fans to pull air in or out. We have four heating options. Well five counting cooking. We have in house heater, and a ceramic heater that came with the rig, a little buddy for the bathroom, and a wave 8 heater we added.
The rig is a project to be sure, we are restoring it.
In summer, we will use a 5000 but ac, and a portable ac if needed. We are building our solar and batteries, we also have inhouse and back up generator options too. I've ordered two wind turbines, 600 watt each. So we will make that work especially on cloudy, snowy winter days.

Being into the environment, I really wanted to convert an electric cargo van, but the tech/range/price isn’t quite there yet. VW is gonna release an electric mini bus with a 300 mile range & 30 minute quick charge in 2022. So i figure I can convert a gas van now, and then switch to an electric one in 4 yrs. Your videos are entertaining as well as informative. I hope I am lucky enough to be interviewed by you someday down the road. Keep on truck in’ 👍
I bought two little USB/alkaline battery fans from Aldi, 2 different styles, both under $10. They work great for me. One has a timer! But I'm intrigued by the fans I've seen in many van videos that include a light.
Fans are better pushers, than they are pullers. They push air in a straight line, but they don't pull air in a straight line. So this means if you have the fan clipped on a window, but the fan itself is a couple inches outside the van, it's not pulling hardly any air whatsoever from inside the van. And retrospectively, if you have a fan sitting on the floor inside your van pointing inside, expecting the fan to "pull air" from outside, it's not really doing that. The exception to the rule is, if you have a fan in a window, and you cover the rest of that window with cardboard or something so that it creates a vacuum effect. That's a better way to position fans. In conclusion, even though fans pull the same volume of air as they push it... fans are pushers, not pullers when it comes to moving air into... or out of... a van.

I've been watching a lot of them because I've been living abroad as an expat in the Philippines but I'm returning to the US and thinking of taking up the nomadic lifestyle instead. Here I live pretty cheap but it's just too far away but as far as beating the heat I have experience as I live in an Apt with no A/C and only an electric fan. Looking forward to being back in the USA and just before Thanksgiving!
Being an expat is highly overrated, having lived abroad in various locations on and off. No place like home. Especially down the road, this is a great country to live in, teared up when I saw the big American flag at Miami airport and kissed the ground when I got to Newark NJ 4 yrs ago . Am here for good. Bob helps make rv/van/car living affordable on any means. This channel has real value to all of us regardless of age, race, gender and means. It will be a great Thanksgiving for you. Welcome home!!

The USA has so much to see and I enjoy Bob's videos that make the nomadic lifestyle seem more attractive than the expat lifestyle. Retirees of whatever age chose one or the other whether they're on SS or disability. I'm in my mid 40's living on 50% disability from the VA. I know I can be a nomad and live off my monthly income and stay on public lands or low cost camping. If anyone has any thoughts to share please add to this thread!! Thank you

I DIY a box fan out of a DC raser scooter 24 volt motor with a standard box fan blade. I run it of a 15 watt 12 volt solar panel. In 2018 a hurricane knocked out power in North Carolina where I live for over a week. I had a generator but nobody could find any gas for damn near two weeks. That fan probably saved my life. Man it was hot.
A 12v cabin air fan out of anything in a pick and pull yard to pull air from under the van into ducts to blow air at where you will be (bed/desk/chair). As long as you wait a half hour after you park the air under you will be cooler then the normal outside air.
How to stop the airflow when off is easy as you can put a pvc valve in line from the hole to close off to stop air from getting sucked in by the exhaust fans.
