    Thanks Ron this was a great introduction to OctoPrint and I’m just at that stage where I want to do the upgrade so this was perfect timing.

    Hey, nice video. I look forward to see what you say regarding repetier server as that is what I use after spending 2 weeks trying to get octoprint to work which I never did. Have a good day.

    Ron, great video and I liked all the points you explained. If you get chance, could you answer this question for me..... Ive got repetier server running on an external Pi to my Artillery X1 printer, when the pi is connected, the screen on the printer is active, although the printer is turned off at the mains. Is this how it should be or is there way to rectify this, I dont want the board/screen to be on when Im not printing really? Many thanks John

    Chris Riley has videos on running octoprint for multiple printers. Easy to setup.
    Also I bought a cheap tablet and view octoprint in the browser. Cost less than the 7 inch screen I bought for one of my raspberry pi’s .
    Octoprint was designed to run on a pi headless.

      @RonsPlace  Před 6 lety

      I agree completely.. it seems to just hate the screen. I never have issues with it headless and using my ipad. I'll take a peak at chris' video

    I have a CR-10 hooked up to a Pi 3 Model B. I found when print round objects, there would be zits and blobs. I tried Repetier Server (free version) and this made the prints better. But using the SD card had the best results. I still use Repetier Server now as it's way more convenient than using the SD card. I just got an Ender-3 so am going to try Octoprint with that and see if there's any difference compared with the CR-10. Wondering if you've noticed the same thing?

    • @RonsPlace
      @RonsPlace  Před 6 lety

      I haven't really noticed anything about the prints.. I wouldn't expect a difference since it theoretically should be all the same gcode (assume you use the same slice). Thats interesting though.. makes me wonder for sure.

    • @mikeneron
      @mikeneron Před 6 lety

      Rons Place Here's the stl I used for testing and yes once sliced I used that same gcode on the sd card, Octoprint, and Repetier Server.

      Here's a picture of the differences with Octoprint on the bottom, Repetier Server in the middle, and the SD card at the top.

      That is amazing.. I will do a similar test and see what I find out. It could make an interesting test video if I find the same thing you did. I used to have issues with similar Zits on my cr-10, but don't now. I wonder if it is because I'm using Repetier?? interesting indeed.

      Mike Cameron what slicer(s) did you use? Because the embedded slicer of Octoprint is Cura 15.x.x, which is very old. I would recommend using Cura 3 on the desktop instead and connect that via the API-key to Octoprint. But Slic3r and (with a little hack) Simplify3D will do that also. Just avoid slicing with Octoprint.
      * Although I did notice there is a plugin to use Slic3r from within Octoprint now. That might be worth testing, if you really don't like a desktop slicer.

    Hi Ron!
    It sounds like on your CR10 you had a Raspberry Pi 3 running OctoPrint *and* a GUI *and* a web browser. A Pi 3 is not a terribly powerful computer, so although it has enough horsepower to run OctoPrint, once you throw a GUI and a browser into the mix, the poor thing just isn’t going to do well. If you have time, set up a Raspberry Pi as a desktop computer without OctoPrint. You may find that the performance isn’t much better than when you had OctoPrint on board.
    I have two Raspberry Pi 3 computers, each with its own OctoPrint installation. Each one runs headless and is command line only. I can open an SSH session to them if I need to modify something in the operating system, but I interact with OctoPrint exclusively via a web browser on my main computer. And that’s essentially what you were doing by having to use an iPad to access the web interface on the Raspberry Pi controlling your CR10.
    Your experience with the Raspberry Pi Zero W mirrors mine. I found that it’s juuuuust powerful enough to run OctoPrint, but only if you aren’t going to try host a camera on it. For the additional $15 to get a Pi 3 over a Pi Zero W, it’s worth it to get the Pi 3. There’s a spiffy case you can get which mounts on the back of the MK3 frame, above the control box. Thingiverse thing 2334119.
    I haven’t used Repetier Server, so I’m looking forward to your views on it.
    Thanks for doing this comparison!

      @RonsPlace  Před 6 lety +1

      thats a very good point to bring up.. It does seem to work ok if everything is closed down and I only access via another computer. Most of my Pi's run headless.. only the one runs with a screen. My problem is I really wanted a screen by the printers to avoid needing the PC nearby when I tinker. Thats what I like SOOO much about Repetier server.. multi printer control with a smooth GUI.

    • @tedder42
      @tedder42 Před 6 lety

      right, basically "hey, it turns out a Pi running X is slower than a Pi that isn't". That ain't OctoPrint.

    • @tedder42
      @tedder42 Před 6 lety

      and Gina says do not run OctoPrint on a Pi Zero.
      I wish OctoPrint had NATIVE multi-printer support. The reality is that $35 per printer is better than connecting several to the same Pi, I think. My other complaint is the mjpeg streaming is SO bandwidth-heavy. But I haven't been able to work out a html5-compatible streaming thing either, so.. eh.

    • @RonsPlace
      @RonsPlace  Před 6 lety +1

      I’m with you 100%.. I just really like the multi printer support and wish Octoprint had it. Also simplifies keeping the external connection safe for monitoring. I’m betting when I go back to more than 2 printers.. I’ll end up back with Octoprint lol.. just works perfect for 2 printers (2 printers and 2 cams). It’s good to have options though.

    OctoPrint also has a mobile App. I've only used the one for IPhone.

    • @RonsPlace

      I showed the mobile version a little in the octoprint video.. its basically the low bandwidth and mobile friendly version.
