In 2013, the DSM-5 replaced Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and other pervasive developmental disorders with the umbrella diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
It was overdiagnosed due to the term "High Functioning" being "attractive to mothers in the doctor's office while being informed of the diagnosis", and groups who started using the label as an identity. It became an overused social colloquialism for anybody who felt that they were different. So the term "Asperger's" was removed, and the Autistic Spectrum part was brought forth with the "Type 1" label, in order to make things less confusing and easier to categorize.
(POST SCRIPT- This is all taken directly from the mouths of those who changed the terminology. The ones who were involved directly with writing the DSM on the subject. There is a video conference I saw that I have been looking for again in order to post the link with this information, but until then, I will not be taking part in any conversations about the reasons for the re-classification, in the comments below. Any comments that claim it was due to being discovered by a german, will be deleted as that is false information. 'Asperger's' is also not a "bad word", as it is just a name, and emotions have no place in medical science. If comments continue, that are based on pointless, emotional hangups, not concerned by the medical world continue, I will just turn off the likes and comments altogether like they were for the first 6 months of release. This is not a political, or virtue signaling channel. He understands that Pierce wants the answer to be "yes", not "no" as we would usually expect from that question. A casual "sure" is what you would expect for a question where the asker is hoping for a yes.
Funny thing is that I don't think Pierce uses that ever again. I mean he'll throw other stuff at him, some accurate "Still am, Pakistan" and others less accurate, but never specifically that one.
In the script, it describes the 'sure' with "as if someone asked him to pass the salt" and he nailed it

Danny pudi is Indian polish IRL, but they made him Syrian in the show, even though he is WAY too dark to be Syrian. Syrians are the same colour as Jeff or Annie
I always loved how Abed says “Yeah I was livid”. It’s so casual
I've had similar reactions a few time. Especially if I'm in pain, stressed, or depressed I have zero emotional expression. One time I saw a doctor about a broken foot and the doctor winced when she saw my football sized foot and toe that bent the wrong way and the doctor asked "doesnt that hurt?" And I just said "I'm in agony" in a flat tone.
You can see it in his eyes tho.. he locks into hers and you can tell he was livid xD
I actually love the twist of the episode where they try to get Abed a date. I love that the audience assumes he's single due to his quirks and so do his friends but that preconception turns out to be entirely wrong. Abed just has no interest in dating people for the sake of dating people.

Haven't given Community a rewatch in a long time, but it created diverse, three-dimensional characters and didn't turn them into tools or devices, years before everyone else caught on. I've still never seen anything else like it, and that goes triple for a character like Abed.

One of the most realistic depiction of Asperger's I've ever seen. There's that stereotype of people with Asperger's lacking empathy, when honestly you have to care so much--I expend so much time and effort trying to make the people in my life happy and often not doing a great job of it, because Asperger's makes it hard to read people and understand social situations. Same as Abed, when I find a foolproof method to make someone in my life happy, I lean very hard on it because it feels so good to be able to give them something that will unquestioningly make them feel good.

I love the Social Psychology episode. I could tell Abed was getting angry on the inside but was being polite on the outside, because I tend to do kind of the same thing. When he says "because you asked me to stay and you said we were friends" hits me hard every time.

Coming back to this, I've come to realize just how important the friendship between Abed and Jeff was. Jeff is confident, sure, but Abed is CONFIDENT. They're like two sides of confidence. One is confident to survive, one... Just is. I love how Jeff comes to see Abed as "the only normal one" and sees his flat attitude as endearing.

It's a really good portrayal of the diagnosis. I myself am diagnosed with it, and I fight each day to be composed. So it's refreshing to see a so well-written character.
I have it but was born in the 80s...I was overlooked and not diagnosed. Look at the Medical texts definition of symptoms and be honest with yourself. It was like having a broken arm you entire life without knowing what a broken arm was...and then you see the reason described to you and you say "oh yeah...that makes total sense." Then take that information to your doctor...who probably does not even know what it is. I asked more than 5 doctors about my symptoms and they all told me I was depressed despite the fact that I was not and had the proof that I was not. It is not easy. I suffered for over 20 years.
Why do you need to be composed? What's the prize at the end?
@@GodsMistake it's not about getting a prize. It's about fitting in, because when you don't people either resent you or fear you, and your life gets more complicated.
It's already not easy in general, but connecting with people is harder if you have a disorder.

a major difference between aspergers and autism is that people with autism doesn't care if they fit in or not, aspergers on the other hand really want to fit, and when we doesn't it hurts

Gonna be real with you. Not only do I have Asperger's, I also happen to be obsessed with collecting information. For me it is mostly science. The types of science I enjoy the most are Psychology, Zoology, Geology, and Chemistry. Never have I ever come across a fictional character that portrays me as well as Abed Nadir. I do share many of the same personality traits as the character Abed Nadir
Same story as me! Unfortunately, since then...many Overwritten characters have come to the forefront...a bad representation of real people. Of course, Abed was written for the screen as well. But with much more respect and nuance than most things coming out today. It is as if it is a fad now. Also part of the reason that the condition was re-named from Aspergers to Type One Autistic spectrum dissorder.

I am the same. except i also have OCD and ADHD, so not only am i obsessed with gathering all human knowledge of the physical universe (even though deep down i know its impossible), studying, for me, is torturous and slow. and thanks to my depression and clinical anxiety, my failures seem monumental in size.

Don’t underestimate an aspie’s ability to get stuck on an order. In high school, a teacher asked me to clean the classroom while she stepped out. It was dark outside and I was mopping the ceiling before she realized I was still there and told me to go home.
Exactly! I got the same types of stories. Humans are so unspecific or over-specific in their communications and I never know which one it is.

As someone who definitely isn't neurotypical, the episode where they were trying to set abed up with someone scared the fuck outta me til the end lmfao. I was so worried Abed was gonna get screwed over emotionally and so frustrated with how everyone else was treating him, the ending was just really nice.
Not until I watched this did I realise he says;

I don't think there will ever be a character like Abed again. Danny Pudi did such an amazing job portraying Abed. While sometimes unable to read the room he's also incredibly intelligent. I love how well Abed and Troy got along, I loved that Annie was as equal as a weirdo when she moved in. It'll just never be a character that can be done in any other show as perfect

I was diagnosed with mild autism in my early 20's. Can't even imagine how different my perception of myself would be had the diagnosis happened earlier. I don't know if I'd be able to forgive my parents if I was in your position, but at least they told you before highschool.

Abed is such a nice take on neurodivergence, usually it's played up as awkward (and it still is sometimes here) but with Abed he is VERY confident and blunt.

This character helped me realize I have aspergers. Was actually incredibly useful. There I was, surrounded by child psychology specialists from my school district in an IEP meeting. None of them realized for 6 fucking years. But then I hear about this beloved show from a youtuber I like, and for the first time in my life, there was the answer to all my questions. Why no one could relate to me, why no one could ever seem to respect my priorities, why everyone arround me acted so strange and selfish or arbitrary compared to how I see the world.

Abed is by far my favorite character
The reason it's no longer a term is not over diagnosis. In fact, most women with it and people of color have been under diagnosed their whole lives and couldn't get the proper help. Even with the diagnosis, not many people know much about it. For example, I live in a major city and they can't find anyone for me who treats adults with ASD-1 (what used to be called Aspergers). It was changed to ASD-1 in order for people to qualify for the help they need. People with ASD-1 are at much greater risk for suicide than neurotypicals. It's mostly because of how people treat us, ostracize us, and misinterpret us. Please refrain from making incorrect generalizations. On a lighter note, I love the character Abed and relate to the episode where everyone else tested as a psychopath except him. People often think we don't have empathy when in fact, we tend to notice the unempathetic nature of many (not all) neurotypicals.
I gave only the exact information given by three people who helped LITERALLY write the book on it. (DSM-5). Several of the top people in the field, themselves said that the main reason for the change in definition was overdiagnosed at the base level. And people with type 2 or different, were being diagnosed with Asperger's or type -1. They made the decision to change the classification in order to deter parents who were bugging the doctors about their children having Asperger's, something they read on the internet about having the words "high functioning" in it, instead of giving their children a proper diagnosis of something more serious. If I can find the facetime group discussion I saw by the top people in the field, I will post that in the description. This video had likes and comments turned off for the first six months because I knew everybody would start coming in with their own emotions about the topic. That, and the fact that I have suffered from it for over 30 years, was the main factor in me making sure that no information I gave, was generalized or false. (or if it was generalized, then the person who made the classification himself was the one who over generalized it)

I've always really loved Abed, but never fully knew why until recently. I found out that I have ASD, it was honestly one of the best days of my life. I started going through lists of symptoms and basically all of them described me in some way. All these aspects of myself that I always found a bit annoying because it meant I was never fully able to understand or relate to others suddenly had a place of origin and that felt amazing. If it wasn't for characters like Abed Nadir I probably wouldn't have been as comfortable with my diagnosis as I was. He's such a great form of representation because he shows that you can have this disorder and manage it, not only that but you can also find those that won't judge you for it. He's probably one of my favorite characters ever put to screen because of that.

I am pretty much incapable of maintaining a social mask. Even as a little kid i could never understand why people were so obviously fake all the time but they didn't even seem to realize they were being fake, or if they do realize it maybe they are just manipulative and think im too stupid to see through their false persona... Is this aspergers? I have suspected maybe i have aspergers in the past because i have always been so different from most people in ways i don't really understand.
Well, speaking as someone who as at minimum borderline Autism spectrum and who probably would have been diagnosed at having Asperger's Syndrome as a kid if it had been a thing at the time, I have to say that whether or not you actually fall in the spectrum from a diagnosis perspective, you certainly have the right cadence of speech down. So, my guess is that if you consider yourself a nerd, have some degree of hyper-focus, and there is at least one sort of trivial seeming thing that you are passionate about, then probably yes. I don't necessarily think though that a diagnosis, occupational therapy, or psychiatry would be good for you; it's probably sufficient to be self-aware and establish what you yourself want to do about it to improve your social skills with normals. Personally, I've found RPGs very therapeutic, as it allows me to create personas for myself to interact with others through.
I'm Asperger's and this is what I've come to realize about the social mask. Neurotypicals find peace and solace in predictable rhythms and, so, they create those rhythms. Whereas we try to create rhythms by performing those tasks that we enjoy as outlets of our creativity, they do it through the practice of rituals. They ask each other nonsense questions for which they don't actually want the answer like "How are you?". They set standards of decorum so that the possibility of hurt feelings is minimal, even if it results in worse outcomes. They knowingly lie to one another because they wish to do immoral activities and not hold themselves accountable.
It's bizarre, at least to me, that this is how they act. I find the particle-wave duality of an electron more coherent than this desire to continually engage falsely with the universe as a self-calming ritual, but, then again, I'm Asperger's and I prefer reality and honesty.
I’m not sure if I’m neurotypical but its not that people are being inherently fake but moreso they set boundaries with people they just met, parents, certain authority figures, etc. Its not really done with that intention, its like a natural reaction. Another thing is acting, talking, or copying the mannerisms of the person you talk to. This is also done unconsciously.
However there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not doing that. As long as you mean well, act and talk however you want. Both sides do what they do without thinking about it, and its not like neurotypical people do that constantly, its only in specific social situations that they feel being “honest” would either make things too awkward for themselves, the other person, or maybe its just easier and more comfortable for them

One of my favorite subtle bits with Abed is in S3E2 when he casually says that he tells everyone apart by their hair color. People with face-blindness (they can't recognize someone by their face) will often recognize someone by their hairstyle or color.
I'm not on the spectrum but i really relate to when they're trying to read an analog clock and Abed is slower than everybody else and he goes "I'm gifted in other ways" haha
my roommates threatened to cover the oven timer with an analog clock so I couldn't read it and had to learn. i could learn if I tried, but what's the point? It's the digital age.
My 15 year old daughter "can not" read the hands on a clock. That is only because they refuse to teach it school, and now she refuses to learn how, using the excuse of "can't" It is a new independent phenomena that I have noticed in younger people.Did I put that part in the video? I remember laughing at it because it was NOT a Asperger's trait that I am familiar with or suffer from, so that made it even funnier as a side joke. But if I included it in this video than I might have made a mistake. If you are just referencing the show en mass than hell yeah! lol

Reading an analog clock is a skill and like any skill, if you don't practice it, it gets rusty. I like Abed's line "i'm gifted in other ways" because that's how I feel about the issue - I could waste time learning an obsolete skill I was taught in 3rd grade, or I could focus on my 3rd year university courseload. I do feel gifted in other ways.
@@RandomPickles I have issues with analog clocks, certain math concepts, tying my shoes, and understanding distance. It COULD be a sign of autism, as I was told by friend who pointed out I have certain issues that she has and she was diagnosed with ADHD at 15 while I was just told I was "unique" because I did well in school and didn't "look" or "act" autistic. It's more related to ADD/ADHD than autism.
@@dinahmyte3749 A clock and math are mechanical. If somebody with Asperger's learns the base method, there should be zero confusion. They follow the same rules every single time without fail, and you can base reality off of them. If anything, they are comforting to people who can not decipher the uncertain, tribal actions with little meaning that humans use to communicate. The thing about clocks that Abed REALLY freaked out about makes total sense. The changing of the daylight savings time. A human creation that goes against the observed reality of the universe. A concept based on looseness and human concept. You may have any list of a number of conditions. But I am pretty sure not knowing how to read a mechanical clock is not the result of a condition that if anything, would make you more connected with them than anything. I am not a doctor, but doctors took 20 years of me explaining to them my conditions for them to figure it out, so I would not trust general practitioners about this to begin with.
@@RandomPickles I had high grades in math, including on my ACTs, but I couldn't understand slope in geometry, I understood how it worked and why, but physically never got it right. I took advanced courses in college, did well, but didn't understand English concepts like Authors meaning, despite getting a degree in linguistics. I still have issues with clocks and my shoe laces at 24 despite working in an academic setting and getting ready for grad school, it's a sign of dyspraxia, not SPECIFICALLY of autism, which was my point. It's a chronic condition, so literally, the rules don't work in my brain.
