#opera #musical #highnote - Hudba
No contest, Kristin sings it and acts it the best. Don't forget this is a theater piece and needs to be acted as well as sung
Benedict Joseph Miller so right, Dessau and Jo might sing it better, coming from opera, but acting and singing in a stunning way gives Kristen the #1 by far
I wouldn't say that. She does play it to the hilt, but bigger does not necessarily equate to better in acting. Not even in a deconstruction, like Candide is. All Kristin did here was her usual shtick.
Benedict Joseph Miller Kristen Chenoweth was actually playing that role in Candide, however some of these were performed in a concert where they don’t really act, which actually I believe that some of them were actually better vocally than Kristen such as Diana Damrau (I’m not saying that she did a bad job she still did amazingly). I mean the title says who sang it better not who performed it better, that is a whole different question.
& the stans cheer CHENO CHENO CHENOOOOO
True. But, it says "who sang it better" so it's only counting the singing part, not the theatre part.
Me, half asleep: this isn’t phantom of the opera

@@fairy5668 I think of it this way: The objective of opera singers seems to be to demonstrate that you are the greatest singer who has ever lived. I'm just wondering how you do vibrato with your tongue i'm confused-
The tongue can act as a barrier to the sound coming from behind it, so some singers manipulate the intensity of their vibrato by manipulating the tongue.
Here’s how you do it correctly: Don’t do it
wiggle it about a bit
Oh man.. that scared me a bit
While possible, it's not recommended because it can really hurt your throat and damage your voice. If your don't have your vibrato, either don't use it or train PROPERLY to develop it. Do not use your tongue, waver your voice, or mess with your volume.
There really is a fine line between hitting super high notes and a screech .
To be honest as an untrained listener all of these ladies sound great. I'll never be able to hit anywhere close to those kinds of notes. I like all of them except for Ms. Tongue Vibrato. It just looks disgusting. As a performer Kristin has it in the bag, but with vocal quality I'd have to give it to Diana.
Kodoku Pierrot I
As a "trained" (I prefer more experienced) listener. There is a huge difference. Some of the performers sounded very strained and some were flat.

For me it's a three way tie between Kristin for her performance and stage presence, Diana for her smoothness and clarity, and Natalie for going higher than anyone else and for her technique.
3:43 I'm sure Patricia's vibrating tongue would cum in handy in that threeway...
What about June and Barbra
I TOTALLY AGREE
She didnt go higher? She was the same lol
They all sang the same notes. Natalie had bad technique though which is why she developed nodes.
My girl Diana Damrau had like the most deviously infectious laugh at the end and I love it so much. Kristen Cheneworth also made me laugh so much with her facial expressions and movement.
I agree
Barbara Cook is really here originating the role and y'all aren't even saying she did it the best. She never knew how to read music, but she could still DO THAT
Barbara Cook not only originated the role, but took direction from Bernstein's himself. If they do a comparison video of the "run" passages she's one of the few that articulates Bernstein's staccato score markings. So many others slur those passages.
@@dkimuk Unlike Kirsten who, as usual overdoes, overacts, etc. The humor is right there is the music. Leave it alone. Thanks to Miss Cook who follow direction from the composer, she is the BEST!
There is an interview with Barbara Cook where she talks about her struggles with this aria. But she obviously figured it out, genius that she was. What an artist!
Diana Damrau, including tipping the upper octave as a little garnish.
Well, it's very hard to choose, because you have two type of performers here- Opera Singers and Actresses Singers (and few who do both), and between the Opera singers you have the Lyrical Sopranos who can hit the note, but you can tell are a bit scared of it, and you have Coloraturas who can do it more easily (for example Sumi Jo, Damrau and Dessay are all famous for singing Queen of Night which goes to top F, so Glitter's Eb sits really comfortably on their voices).
Personally, I prefer it when an actress sings it- Barbara Cook (who originated the role) and Scarlet are brilliant, but for me Kristin the all-round winner as she does it perfectly in every sense!
ALSO, please note that the LEGENDARY Edita Gruberova is in her 60s in this video (even late 60s!!), so give her a mother-f***ing standing ovation!!!
Thanks again M.G for another brilliant super-cut x
I thought it was pretty amazing that Edita could still hit notes like that at her age. At that point usually women's voices have actually dropped down a little bit so that was pretty amazing.
I totally agree. They are also some light-lyrics in there,
Have you heard the younger Edita sing the original higher version of Zerbinetta's aria? Superb. I was lucky to hear her onstage (only once) in 'Puritani' in '91 and I cherish the memory.
Edita Gruberova is 60 , thats not an excuse ,60 is very young for an opera singer , Nellie melba at 65 could still sing beautifully
@@rat5800 Light Lyric is not a voice fach , coloratura isnt really a voice fach either it's more of a vocal skill and you aren't born a coloratura , and there are some dramatic sopranos who can sing coloratura
No one has touched Barbara Cook in this music, and almost no one has sung the Hs in hahahaha the way Bernstein wanted like Barbara. Her E-flat was great, and she did this 8 times a week and twice on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Word.
THANK YOU! I grew up on the Barbara Cook original cast album that my parents bought immediately after seeing Candide when I was maybe five or six years old. Barbara remains the best followed by June Anderson. You can all keep the screechy Chenoweth.
I also grew up on the soundtrack with Barbara Cook. It is on my iPod to this day. Hearing anyone besides her sing it is so strange to my ear. For me, her interpretation is perfection.
Agree.
I must agree. Barbara Cook also got all her laughs without shtick. But it did come, as Cunegonde says, at an awful cost. It nearly drove her to a nervous breakdown having to produce that song eight shows a week.
okay y’all sleeping on sumi jo’s vocals tho 🥺 kristin definitely had the best performance but natalie absolutely killed it sowwy
Natalie was the only one who went up that octave at the end (idk the note but Christ) and for that she deserves way more praise

@@Lolo50000 Damrau too!! She and Dessay did the G#6 at the end!!

Hmmm....it's so shady to include Edita singing this aria at 70 when there are plenty of good recordings available (and everybody else here has clips in their prime....).
I like many of the ladies, but I didn't know Rose Sawvel. Going to look her up!
Thomas Gareau, baritone I know, You’re Right! I know Edita could do that way better.

How did you not put Diana? She acted too
when we talk about these legends we often forget how great Kristin PLAYS. Plus, she could sing that on a rollercoaster, you wouldn't hear the difference.
Everybody forgot Barbara Cook who introduced the Song and also performed it
My favorites here are Kristin Chenoweth (such richness of tone!), Barbara Cook, and Natalie Dessay. Honorable mentions to Meagan Miller and Sumi Jo. I normally love Diana Damrau, but I didn't love her tone here (maybe the sound quality hurt her here?). I would have loved to see Harolyn Blackwell (from the 1997 Broadway revival) included as well.
(Sorry, I meant this as a comment on the main post, but I guess I will leave it here, too.)
While Kristen's was more comical, I truly think Barbara's Cook's performance was purely phenomenal. The class and power she commands with her voice makes her sound like so very lavish. I listen to her version all the time. I love it.
Cook... COOK, you idiots! The original and still never equalled.
I agree! Cook’s voice is so pristine and delicate . Her voice reminds me of songbirds for some reason!
Technically diana and Natalie sang a whole octave above their last note lol
Hey, good to see you here! Love your vids 😄
Yeah Natalie and Diana are one of the only singers who hit a G#6 at the end!
It’s probably Diana followed very closely by Natalie, although I enjoyed the dynamics used by Sabine. And Kristin’s is just a classic!
PeterButterSings
You’re in my thoughts. My post elaborates.
Once again, Barbara Cook. She sings without exaggeration and any trace of “ham” and the irony is delivered in a subtle way, without recourse to the burlesque of miss Chynoweth , great artist that she is. A prime example of less is more, plus a gorgeous voice and the clearest diction, she lets the music and lyrics do there work, never stooping to low comedy, sheer brilliance.
Natalie of course. The whole performance is amazing, voice and acting !
I think the best were Kristen, Diana, and June. The worst were Patricia (THAT TONGUE WTF) and Edita.
June's eyes!
Yeah that tongues was just cray-cray, and Edita's like... what.. 70?
Poor example of Edita’s singing. She was brilliant.
Lisa Autrey: June has eye/vision problems. Quite unfortunate.
mpsmithpt2001: THANK you! That's what I came here to say. Edita was singing notes in the stratosphere long before many of these young women were even born. When she was in her prime, she was the dramatic coloratura to beat (well, ok - maybe she *and* Dame Joan.)
Scarlett's first note here has always given me chills
Diana Damrau is so special. 😍😍😍 She feels what she sings. And that makes her a Diva for me.
All the voices that made it like a stage performance and not just a piece of music were all my favorite. Even if it wasnt like extreme, facial movements, tone, the little giggles at the end of them, all great

I’m a coloratura connoisseur. I like to think.
Kristin - theatrically & vocally is outstanding in this aria, and is and has been for years my 2nd favorite performance of all time. When I think of “Glitter and Be Gay” I do think of her performance, though she is not my #1 performance of all time. This is quintessential Cunegonde though. Slayage Kristin.
Daniela - cute.
Sabine - vocally, she is a coloratura monster. She needs to watch for going sharp though.
Edita - I’m disappointed. She knew better than to sing that at that age. It was funny though. 😂
Edited: Not being agist - she is a Queen thru and thru.....but she could’ve left this song alone.
June - YASSSSS QUEEN. What Red candy did she have before going on. 😂
Simone - theatrically, I’d pay to watch that! That spin is glorious when she’s actually singing.
Scarlett - THAT is a pretty damn voice! Top note was questionable.
Barbara - cute! Edit: HELLA cute - she sounds so lovely actually!
Petibon - no words. She’s singing flatter and flatter. I do love one of her recordings though, just not this one. #tongue 😐
Rose - sing Diva.
Constance - I’m not sure....that dress. Edit: she nailed every note but like 1.5 of them. Hahah!
Megan - was decently great but that orchestra up to the climax....😒
Sumi - THAT VOICE. Piercingly gorgeous. She did go a little flat at times.
Dessay - IS MY QUEEN and slaysssss her performance to artistic mastery (voice, acting, technique). She is in my top 2 coloraturas of ALL TIME. Definitely my third best performance ever! WHEN I NEED A COLORATURA FIX, I GO THE DESSAY ROUTE.
Diana - IS THE BEST HANDS DOWN. WATCH. THE. WHOLE. PERFORMANCE. I get chills every single time I watch it.

NPC 7384976 god i hate when people shake their heads for vibrato. i saw an actress who played the mom in finding neverland doing it to fake some sense of vibrato and it was the worst
If you don't do vibrato correctly then it can actually cause major problems later with singing. Whenever I see little kids being forced to do vibrato it makes me so angry. Vibrato comes with age, it cannot be faked if you want a good sound and or long career
@The Flying Dutchman Vibrato is not produced by the diaphragm, it's produced in the throat.

You're SO right. No one comes close to her. Vocally perfection, including flawless diction. AND... her characterization is SO superior, so hilarious and jaded, compared to the mugging of Chenowith

The definitive version has to be the original version done by the incomparable Miss. Barbara Cook who originated the role in the musical Candide when it opened on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theater on December 1, 1956 the musical ran for only 73 performances but because the score was recorded Candide is the only musical flop to come back later with a different book and staging to become a hit. It was Barbara Cook's coloratura soprano range that won her the role of Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein's 1956 operetta Candide, in which she debuted the show-stopping and vocally demanding comic aria "Glitter and Be Gay."

Natalie Dessay!! Not only is she perfect acoustically, she is also able to give total credibility to the character making it her very own. Bravo !
Kristin, best comic actress and best interpreter of the song.
Scarlett Strallen did the best job of both singing AND acting it. (Watch her sing the entire thing sometime - it's delicious) Kristen was great at hamming it up, but that nasal tone makes for a seriously unpleasant listening experience. On the singing front, I enjoyed several of the opera singers (particularly Anderson, Jo and Dessay), but there's always a great fondness for the original...
What are you guys talking about? They're *_ALL_* spectacular, marvelous, and wonderful !
Every one is great, even June Anderson, who has the wide vibrato that I don't care for.

As a person who isn't familiar with musicals, my personal favorite performance-wise is Kristen because she was the most hilarious to me and she sang it in her own way, and added a bit of her personality to the song and i feel like she genuinelu enjoyed singing it! But voice-wise? I don't think anyone can beat Barbara Cook. I just love how clear and bright her voice is! She sang the 'h's when 'hahaha'-ing so clearly and the high notes are just impeccable! Natalie’s FACE when she hit that last high note!!! 😂 She couldn’t believe it either!
She certainly did believe it. She is one of the few sopranos who could manage the 2 x G6s in Popoli di TessagliaIo non chiedo (K316 by Mozart). She used the complete range from Eb6 to Ab6 in various pieces.
She could sing much higher notes, for her this aria is an easy one.
Diana Damrau took the cake, she slayed it! June Anderson and Constance Hauman did well too
*cries in alto*
Cook is the only one who sings the music straight, and with a delicious twinkle in her voice. It’s also interesting to listen to her interviews with regard to preparing the piece. I was also pleased to read in her memoir that her approach was to sing and interpret the aria in an authentic manner, and to not exaggerate its humor.
