Everyone but Madeline is fearful: Madeline is so panicked that she’s started to disassociate. That’s why she seems kind of calm at the beginning - she’s reached the point of anxiety where she’s in a sort of fugue state and is not entirely sure where she is. Her true emotions come to the surface as the song goes on.

Can we just agree that Jayma Mays is such an underrated singer and actress. i know she isn’t really considered a singer, but whenever she sung in glee her voice was so cute and nice. also her acting is really really good especially in scenes like this where she has to show her characters anxiety and in scenes where she has to break down or cry, they are really convincing and make me really feel what the character is going through.
also, bonus points for singing this song faster then most people do, it takes a lot of skill to sing this song especially in the speed she did it.

Her timbre of voice didn’t fit with the way she was moving in the scene (her light airy tone would NOT have happened when she’s literally running out of a church) so I would’ve loved a live performance from her... it’s so hard to compare to the live performances. The way she casually starts picking the flowers off the bouquet, the delight in her face when the lightning strikes after "it starts to rain", when she grabs the mic off the stand for "look I didn't want to have to tell you but I may be coming down with hepatitis and I think I'm gonna faint", how perfectly timed her throw of the bouquet is to when the ladies catch it right on the last note, and just how relaxed her delivery is of this monster of a song. Pardon me, is everybody here?
    Because if everybody's here
I'd like to thank you all
    For coming to the wedding.
I'd appreciate you going even more
I mean, you must have lots of better things to do
And not a word of it to Paul
Remember Paul? You know, the man I'm going to marry
But I'm not, because I wouldn't ruin anything
    As wonderful as he is.
Thank you all for the gifts and the flowers,
Thank you all, now it's back to the showers
Don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today.
    Bless this day
    Tragedy of life
    Husband bound to wife
    The heart leaps up
    And feels dead
    This dreadful day.
Listen everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for
    A wedding. What's a wedding? It's a prehistoric ritual
    Where everybody promises fidelity forever,
Which is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of,
Which is followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he'll realize
He's saddled with a nut, and want to kill me, which he should.
Thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married
Go have lunch, 'cause I'm not getting married
You've been grand, but I'm not getting married
Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married
And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today.
    Go! Can't you go?
    Why is nobody listening?
    Goodbye! Go and cry
    At another person's wake.
If you're quick, for a kick
You could pick up a christening
    But please, on my knees,
There's a human life at stake!
Listen everybody, I'm afraid you didn't hear
Or do you want to see a crazy lady fall apart in front of you?
It isn't only Paul who would be ruining his life
You know, we'll both of us be losing our identities
I telephoned my analyst about it, and he said to see him Monday
But by Monday I'll be floating in the Hudson with the other garbage.
I'm not well, so I'm not getting married
You've been swell, but I'm not getting married
Clear the hall, 'cause I'm not getting married
Thank you all, but I'm not getting married
And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today.
    Bless this bride
    Totally insane
    Slipping down the drain
And bless this day in our hearts
    As it starts
    To rain.
    Today is for Amy
Amy, I give you the rest of my life
To cherish and to keep you
    To honor you forever
    Go! Can't you go?
Look, you know I adore you all
    But why watch me die
    Like Eliza on the ice?
    Look, perhaps I'll collapse
In the apse right before you all
    So take back the cake
Burn the shoes, and boil the rice.
    Today is for Amy,
    My, happily, soon-to-be wife
    My adorable wife...
Look, I didn't want to have to tell you,
But I may be coming down with hepatitis, and I think I'm gonna faint
So if you want to watch me faint, I'll do it happily
But wouldn't it be funnier to go and watch a funeral?
So thank you for the twenty-seven dinner plates
    Thirty-seven butter knives
    Forty-seven paperweights
    Fifty-seven candle holders

No it doesn't. Patti LuPone is the most overrated performer in the history of musical theatre. She literally shouts everything, doesn't have any sense of musicality, and destroys every rhythm she touches, and her fans just excuse all of that and call it "making a piece her own." Get real, people. I have never understood the appeal. Is it because she's a big personality? I'll give you that. But the heyday of larger-than-life non-singers is over. It's time for us to leave Patti in the past where she belongs. She's perfectly good in roles that require no singing. Maybe she should do more stuff like Penny Dreadful.

Katie Finneran's is my favourite of these performances for the energy and physicality that she brings to this musical number. I absolutely love the moment she loses her breath at, "I'm not well..."
The audience finishes, "...So I'm not getting married."
Katie then recovers with, "You've been swell, but I'm not getting married." Priceless!
Madeline Kahn is my second favourite because her portrayal is 50 shades of cray cray. She has an almost maniacal tone to her voice which is comical yet believable and fits the role perfectly.
I also commend Janes Shaw’s rendition, which has the most clarity of diction, along with the added pressure of having Stephen Sondheim right behind her, scrutinising every line.
Jayma Mays’ version is good and I enjoy it very much, however, because it was made for the screen I struggle to include this when comparing these performances.

@@kalatran9583 Whole reason I put Jayma as least nervewracking is because it was the only one that wasn't live, so if she messed up, they could easily reshoot it. That isn't to discredit her at all, I actually prefer the Glee version of this song due to her speed while singing. On the other hand, I put Jane Shaw as most nervewracking because she was performing this right in front of Sondheim himself. Regardless, anything below "least clear" is more of my opinion than anything.

    My top three?
    1. Madeline Kahn - not the fastest but the one with the best characterisation. She doesn't need to flail around and make funny faces but you can tell that the lady is a little bit "cuckoo" in the head.
    2. Julie Andrews - I like how she builds up the craziness slowly and goes balls-out crazy in the end, not in a very theatrical but in a more subtle and quiet manner.
    3. Jane Shaw - the way she keeps pace and just builds the momentum from the get-go. Just plain wow.
I like Lupone too but she is just a bit too "out-there" for me.

Many people have praised Madeline's "subtle performance", But in fact, I don't think the audience in that occasion could see and sense what we have seen and sensed on the screen… Many people had praised Carol's version but her pace is slower than the original… Patti Lupone is a master, nailed it✨. I understand why some commenters liked Madeleine Khan the best; she does a fantastic job of conveying frozen anxiety and frenetic hysteria at once, but I prefer the variation in lines from moment to moment by Julie Andrews to Khan's more single-emotion delivery.
