  • Watch a beautifully animated tour of the Hillside Sample Project, a virtual recreation of Moshe Safdie’s original vision for Montreal’s Habitat 67, created with Unreal Engine 5 and RealityCapture.
By diving into one of the most important buildings of the 60s, Neoscape helps viewers explore some of the key architectural principles that make Hillside so compelling, from Safdie’s use of prefabrication to modular design. It also demonstrates how the design changes in relation to different weather, seasonal, and time-of-day shifts, reminding viewers how much of an impact an environment plays on a building/structure.

    About Habitat 67:
Habitat 67 is a model community and housing complex in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, designed by Israeli-Canadian architect, Moshe Safdie. It is one of the most recognizable projects in modular urbanization and construction, partially because its vision for affordable future living was considered very ahead of its time. It is still a key landmark in Canadian architecture and is well-known throughout North America.
Habitat 67 was originally conceived as Safdie’s master's thesis at the School of Architecture at McGill University and then built as a pavilion for Expo 67, a World's Fair, which was held from April to October 1967.
As one of the major symbols of Expo 67, Habitat 67 gained worldwide acclaim as a "fantastic experiment" and "architectural wonder" and was seen by millions of visitors (over 50 million attended the exhibit).
Habitat 67 was designed to integrate the benefits of suburban homes-namely gardens, fresh air, privacy, and multi-level environments-with the access, community, density, and economics of a modern urban apartment building. It illustrated a new potential for urban living at a time when many households were leaving the city and sprawling, low-density development was on the rise.
Sadly, scope and funding never aligned, making the realization of the full project vision an unfinished dream. The existing structure was originally meant to only be the first phase of a much larger complex, but the total estimated cost of $42 million prevented that possibility. Instead of a community of 1,200 families rising 30 stories, the Habitat 67 that stands today was scaled back to 158 residences and less than half of the original height.
However, thanks to Unreal Engine, Safdie’s original vision can be explored in all its (virtual) glory, providing the next generation of architects, engineers, and urban planners an interactive reference point for creating a better tomorrow.

I actually saw the prototype in Montreal at Expo ‘67 (I was 16 at the time) and was very impressed. To me, it seemed to be a perfect combination of elegance, luxury and privacy - or at least a very good illusion of such to my teenage self. It very much seemed to be the wave of the future, neatly solving most of the problems (IMHO) of suburban living which were just beginning to be apparent at the time.
I hated ‘commuting’ to my job downtown (10 miles - LOL) and hated mowing our large lawn even more. And even in the much smaller prototype, the common areas were very nice and quite parklike. And I seem to recall that that you could expand the units by simply adding additional modules to accommodate a growing family. Which seemed to be far more clever than constantly buying a larger house.

Thank you for your comments. I was younger. Expo was fantastic, it showed what we have and what we could do. It inspired me to think about us and the future, and to plan for the future. These day it is the corupt official in the government, in the world and their often high tech, big business oligarch friends that cripple society and our dreams. The mismangement of COVID and useless wars that do so much damages.

    Breathtaking.
    Heartbreaking.
We are all to often shown how much better life could be by visionaries and technology but all that we recieve in reality are remakes of remakes and maintainance of the status quo by those who would stand to loose control if the populace were fit, well, educated and enlightened.

It's good that Safdie makes a comeback after 50 years seeing his vision fully developed. It's a glimpse of hope for all other architects who wants to illustrate their work in Unreal engine 5.2. Brutalism must continue in our modern times. It suits our atmosphere. The style is timeless and eloquent without being flamboyant and excessively geometric.
I'm glad this architect found his tribute and a team of 3D modelers for his vision. Kudos to all of them who participated making the vision in its entirety. Many other projects should follow this trend including the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and many others that deserves a full 3D curation. People should be aware of these projects, so the young generation of architects.

This project really was ahead of it's time in the 60's and it solves a lot of problems, with cities taking so much space and being divided. A lot is destroyed with large scale cities, a lot of important nature is lost, and while the introduction of cars made it easier to get around through large cities, it causes a lot of pollution just to travel around. Safdie really had a great vision here to put everything together in a livable space, to take less space, to make things easier to get to and more in line with the social nature of people rather than cities built for cars. The ability for everyone to have green terrace is great, too. It allows for good mental health of the tenant to have a green space to relax in, but also greenery can be planted to help sustain a lot of vital wildlife that a lot of people likely don't think about (our pollinators, who by and large help the crops that are produced and are facing danger with expanding cities).
I really hope that this helps to push architects to take the leap into making more "daring" structures like this. It could do a lot.

I'm still trying to comprehend the shape of this complex. From my understanding it seems like bunch of boards resting on each other and apartment units peppered on the outside. It's brilliant to ensure maximum view and sunlight for every unit. But you also got the shaded space underneath that can be used for semi-outdoor place like a shopping complex. Though i'm more partial to traditional brick low-rise buildings, i still very much prefer this than suburban sprawl anytime.

Where are all the cars parked? When you get groceries does everyone get a wagon to haul them around? Just practical concerns mostly. This project (of creating Hillside) is pretty awesome, but it's a shame that there aren't any videos that give a tour of the complex.
Neoscape, if you are listening, you should make a video that shows what a particular inhabitant's life may be like. It should show the type of walk they would need for a typical visit to a grocery store, and it should show what stairs or escalators, etc., that they would use. Even after watching all the videos I can find on Hillside, I still don't understand the basics of how people move from place to place.
Surely inhabitants would need vehicles at times (to visit friends in other cities), so are there vehicle rental facilities included?
What about schools, theaters, museums, etc. If this is truly a multi-use space, why don't we se anything of them in this model?
