New rider here also. Bought all my gear before I got my bike. Sat on a few including an Iron 883 but ultimately decided on a Rebel 500 because I’m a short dude and was able to flat foot it and felt much safer. Recently passed my CMSP course and looking forward to practicing my skills in the parking lots! This channel and watching Nikki’s adventures allowed me to make smarter choices! Great channel! Some people already thinking about their next bike, I’m here thinking about my next purchase on riding gear haha. Already have two helmets, two pairs of riding boots and two pairs of riding jeans!
I got my bike helmet gloves and summer jacket at the same time. 2 weeks later got actual riding boots and armored pants. I was already wearing boots but they were work boots so I wanted the added protection of riding boots. Also got frame sliders when I got the boots and pants.
Great to see you out on the bike again Dan! I always enjoyed your informative ride along videos, they are what originally got me hooked on your content. I love all your content but these were always a favorite of mine. Nice to see a new addition to the series. I've been a rider for a while now, but I feel that someone can never know enough no matter what skill level they are. My buddy who has never rode before is really wanting to get into riding, and so I have directed them to give your channel a look. Your channel, your beginners guide, paired with him taking an MSF course, I feel is a great well rounded education for him to get on the road. Anytime someone mentions to me about possibly wanting to get into motorcycles, I'm directing them to your content. Keep up the great work brother!
Been watching bike videos and DanDan since 2017, buying my first bike tomorrow! Like a dream come true. Never forget the bigger picture when watching the videos. It's to start riding and stay safe!!! Super excited😄
Dan is a saint for constantly making content for new riders. Even if some of this stuff like "get good gear" seems like common sense you know there are going to be people who do bare minimum research into impact and slide protection ratings and think any ol gear will be adequate.
Course starts next week just bought a 2015 Road Glide just delivered today. I have bought protective pants, shirt, gloves, boots, jacket on the way. Looking forward to practicing for about a 2weeks to a month before I get out in the streets.
Wish I would’ve of known how addictive riding was! I’m already preparing for my next bike after I pay my first bike off. Love your videos man, I’m continually learning how to keep myself as safe as possible while out riding. Looking forward to learning more from your videos! Stay safe man!

a good tip for beginners and the rear break is. keep the rear breake locked while standing still. if xou fo get hit by a car it keeps the bike relatively in its position and reduces the chance to get beneath the car instead on on top of it
Sound advice thank you Dan! Just started motovlogs but only after a few years of solid practice. Didn’t realize how hard it is and distracting it could be lol 😂
This might be the first clip I've ever seen where one of the bikes is (or at least looks like, but I'm pretty sure) a 1990ish Honda VF750c Magna (3:15) That's the same as I got, and now my day got a bit better :D (I had to share this because I just fell in love with this bike, there was no other option for me)
I'm grateful to have found your channel because there won't be anything I wish I knew starting out! and if I don't know/practice something it will be my fault
Just pasted my M road test saturday. I didnt take a msf course, but i wore out videos from you, fast eddie and mcrider. I did loose a point due to a foot down on their verison of a U turn. Low speed left, straiten the bike up for 7 or 8 ft then low speed left. That 2nd left got me. I did replace my carb the night before the test,so throttle feel was different than what i was use to. It sucks, but showed me something i need to work on. I cant full lock U turn yet, but i can u turn without dropping a foot. Was also the first time i ever did a cone weave. I do wear full gear. Dont remember the brand kevlar lined ce padded jeans, vulcan 320 boots, fly racing ce jacket with a d30 spine protector, viking cycle leather gloves and a LS2 stream dot/ece full face helmet.
One thing i definitely have to practice is my U turns! I took a wrong turning on Sunday and had to turn around and realised half way through the turn I gotta practice way more with it. Luckily it was on a road I knownis dead quite 99.9% of the time but still. Just with the damn weather would stay dry enough and not so windy here in the UK at the moment 😑😔
Look all the way through those , turn your head all the way around , always look through and you’ll get more and more comfortable! Mike here in California on a GSXR 600 .
Something I’ve recently realized that helps me out on U-Turns is if I’m the first vehicle to a left hand turn and I have an island, I’ll stop 10-15 feet away from the line. Speed is your friend, especially in a U-turn. This way I can get a bit of a running start and get some speed before making the turn. It takes practice! Ride Safe!
For stopping from speed yea front brake is 80 plus percent but the rear brake is stupidly useful at stops slow speed hill starts. All kinds of situations
Our instructor made us practice using our rear break a lot when stopping. Your passenger’s helmet is less likely to bump yours, and if you always use it to stop at lights your break light is lit up and makes you more visible while allowing you to rest your right hand
In California the DMV book would tell you as your coming to stops to click on and off on you front break not necessary use it but flash it ! This helps a lot and I’ve seen the response from the cars behind me. Really makes you noticeable. I also have a bright blue led light on the back . My worse fear would to be rear ended.
if youre way above the average weight standard tire pressure isnt good , same for the other extreme, go talk to your dealer, if hes good with the recommendations, switch the dealer, its simple physics and of course make sure to watch keith codes - a twist of the wrist ;)
I took riding lessons and first thing they said was to never grip the handlebars always keep your fingers touching the clutch and brake levers. Keeps you from accidentally gunning the throttle.
Honestly a good pair of riding boots is such a quality of life upgrade. Obviously protection is key but I got a solid pair of waterproof adventure boots I can hop off the bike and do a long hike in comfortably, and I will never go back.
Great video! What was Dan using as training cones in video at around 6:30?? I need something to go out and practice that will easily fit in my tail bag anyone know that would be great.
The owner's manual is not the best setup for tire pressure when you're aiming for performance. I'm aware that this is a video for beginners and do not recommend that brand new riders mess up with their tire pressure other than what's advised on their manuals AT ALL, this is for the ones who have already been initiated in high-performance riding but still don't know about how much your tire pressure affects your riding (spoiler alert: it's a lot). Manufacturers have those recommendations in their manuals for a reason, and that's because it's safe. It wond bend your rim in case of greater road-wheel impacts, it won't be so dangerous in case of a tire puncture; it's just overall safer if you're riding normally. If you're a beginner or are just willing to ride with the maximum safety that your tire can provide, go with your manual. However, do not push it to the very limits. If you do that, your tire will be just as dangerous as an under or overinflated tire in regular riding. Very hard cornering, hard acceleration and hard braking (I'm talking about really heavy stuff) WILL put you in high danger in those conditions. I won't get into details here because this is already too much for a youtube comment, but do your research. If you're riding on a track or just having hardcore fun on twisties (don't think of them as a track, they are not. Ride responsibly.), you will be safer making your tire pressure a tad lower and not equal in your front and rear, as your manual will usually suggest. Again: if you're this last kinda guy, do your research. If you're a safe street rider, stick to your manual. Ride safe out there, boys. Sorry for writing a book, but I think it's relevant for the ones who don't know about the impact of their tires' pressure on their riding. All I'm talking about here is safety, especially for the ones who like to push their boundaries (which is not really the best idea for you to do on the street, but welp, gotta lower them bois' risks too).
I like these shorter informal videos. The longer videos in excess of 15 minutes 20 minutes tops I begin to lose focus. It’s not due to your content. I’m probably not the only one that feels this way.
