Schizophrenic and Changing the World (Cecilia's Incredible Journey)

  • Cecilia is schizophrenic and autistic. When we first met in 2017 she was experiencing hallucinations nearly every minute of every day. Now five years later, Cecilia has found a treatment plan that greatly reduces her hallucinations. She has also founded an organization that aims to connect people with psychosis and empower them to speak about their experiences. Cecilia hopes that those out there who are struggling do not give up.

    The work Cecilia is doing with Students with Psychosis is groundbreaking and lifesaving. Anybody who would like to support this organization can contribute at bit.ly/StudentsWithPsychosis . Every donation will go directly to Students with Psychosis to widen their reach and allow them to continue to provide this pivotal resource to so many. I was blown away by witnessing their work first-hand and am so proud to call Cecilia a friend.

    This made me cry. My husband, a veteran, victim of abuse, struggled with psychosis. He was so paranoid he'd never get help. He'd never open up to anyone, and even didn't share everything with me. The song the guy sang had me in tears. I know my kids dad struggled in sleep and in life. I tried to comfort him and give him all of my love, but he couldn't stay away from the liquor which helped him escape. He died with no help in 2020. They often go undiagnosed with no one they can open up to, feeling alone. Dying alone. Cecilia, you love are sent straight from heaven. God's angel down here on mission. It disturbs me that her mental health team tried to make out her wanting to follow her dreams was part of a delusion. I think there is an assumption by the medical community that because people with psychosis have altered perception in one area of their thoughts they lack capacity for rational decision in other areas of their lives. So I'm glad to hear both Cecilia and Students with Psychosis are both flourishing, they both very much deserve to.

    • @corvarts9311
      @corvarts9311 Před rokem +42

      This 100%! Psychosis can be debilitating but it doesn't mean it's impossible to follow your dreams. Might be harder, might take longer, but by no means impossible.

    • @LeftOfToday
      @LeftOfToday Před rokem +27

      It doesn't even have to be psychosis for a therapist to diminish one's dreams on account of making whatever connection to their patient's diagnosis. I can speak from experiencing of having had a therapist literally scream at me and leave me for going back to school and following my dreams, all because I didn't tell her first. I don't think I needed her permission, but apparently she thought I did. It has still left doubt in me that I was 'crazy' to follow my dreams despite having graduated, and despite having been in a career I enjoyed for 7 years (up until my physical health failed me more recently). Having a mental illness can set someone up to doubt and question themselves that much more than average; it's the worst when your own therapist - instead of supporting you - just amplifies that self-doubt.

I’ve worked with clients who have hid their symptoms from me for years, which I both understood while making me extremely sad for them. From what I’ve learned, people can become incredibly lonely with that disorder. We need to make space for everyone in society who wants to be part of it.

    That song.. instant tears. He’s phenomenally talented. And Cecelia’s growth is amazing to see, from a haunted young person to someone so much more engaged and present. This whole video just filled me with contentment. I have experienced psychotic features with my depression and no one really understands. They see me as “too smart and put together” to experience extreme mental illness.

    What a lovely, intelligent, beautiful woman. I have to say, just seeing Cecilia in this video, I have a much more positive understanding of schizophrenia. She knows what is happening when she is having hallucinations, and that is a huge part of her success. I have had anxiety attacks my whole life. But just understanding what was happening and now knowing what it is, and when it is happening, has practically "solved" the problem.

    Ive been watching SBSK for years and I vividly remember Cecilias interview.. I went off to college in 2018 and had trouble sleeping. I went to a doctor about it and got prescribed insomnia meds to help with sleep. A side effect that I ended up suffering from was auditory hallucinations. I didnt even know. In my apartment I was constantly hearing birds or bird noises and I thought nothing of it. I genuinely thought i was hearing birds at all hours of the day, and never considered my meds were doing something. I would lay in bed and hear birds all night, which kept me awake, and I was miserable. I thought about killing myself several times because my meds were making me tired but I couldnt fall asleep because I was being disturbed by bird noises and it felt never ending. It wasnt until I had a friend over and mentioned the birds and they told me they didnt hear it that I reached out for help. Ultimately I just stopped taking my insomnia meds and stopped hearing things, but now 4 years later I still have an awful time going to sleep. But it makes me happy to hear other peoples stories because it lets me know that Im not alone. I was on sleep meds for 2 years and suffered the entire time. Thank you Cecilia for telling your story and helping others and thank you Chris continually restoring my faith in humanity ❤
