My girl and I were having an argument one time, and this came on MTV. We stopped, looked at each other, and this became "our" song through courtship and marriage, until the day she died.
Many videos from the 80s have certain level of nostalgia, but this one is overloaded. It's like it was planned to make us miss those days after four decades
The Portuguese call what you describe Saudade-a constant feeling of absence, the sadness of something that's missing, the yearning for the return of what is now gone, and the repressed understanding that one might never encounter the object of longing ever again.
That's because music was way better then! There was also an eclectic genre of music, Not just an industry dominated by hip hop, made in the studio with a mixing machine.
Every 3-4 years I find myself here on this page. Then it's onto "Steppin Out", then "Is She Really Going Out w/ Him?" Like clockwork but it's never planned. That's the power of great music.
When I was dating my wife she bought the Night and Day CD. I told one of my friends and he was like "Whoa! She's a Keeper!." And here we are, over a quarter of a century later. And yes. We still have the CD.
Songs that tug at your heart strings like this one just aren't (and maybe can't be) made anymore. It drives home the irresistible need for a special someone in your life to share of yourself. I'm blessed to have a wonderful wife of 30 years, but this song still brings out the melancholy. Even more so knowing this era is never going to come around again.
Most certainly is! A close friend of mine who passed away a few years ago would feel the same way. Her and I CZcamsd up a bunch of videos from the 1980s and she was very kindhearted, intelligent and understanding.
I was just introduced to the artist Joe Jackson recently by my little brother who sent me a message telling me that "Stepping out" by Joe Jackson was the last cassette my father bought before he was killed along with my Mom in a house fire on April 3rd, 1987. My dad was an accomplished piano player. When I listened to Joe Jackson, I realized I had heard some of his music before but as I listened to "Stepping out" and some of his other songs, it was as if I was listening to them for the 1st time. I knew immediately why my father bought his cassette. Joe Jackson is unbelievable on keyboards! And his messages in his music will be timely for all time. Someone wrote a response to JJ's music in these messages saying " This artist is so underrated". I agree, but I'm guilty of that. We should all listen to all artists and all people with better ears. Thankyou my little brother "Foobiebeachnut" I Love & miss you so! xox, "Lauriepauriestargirl"
De seguro tus papás se ponen muy contentos, cada vez que tú hermano o tú, ponen la música de J.J., y tu papá debe estar orgulloso de que aprecies como él, a este gran compositor ❤. Saludos

Haven't heard this for decades but for no reason a couple of lines from it came into my head last night and I couldn't get them out. Had to listen to it in its entirety. Great song. Btw, how did I get this old? Last time I heard this I was 20 something, now I'm 60 😱
This was constantly played on MTV back in 1983, I’m now 52 and never got tired listening to the “Day and Night” album. JJ is a masterpiece, his 1979 punk music, “Got the Time” was covered by Anthrax 🤘🏼
Seems like yesterday when I played this cassette over and over in my detachable walkman. I was in 6th grade and the other kids would laugh at me because I enjoyed this music so much. Guess I was the only one that had good taste in music.
Sep 2021 - This song is about the battle between the boredom of monogamy and the loneliness of independence. The singer wants his girlfriend/wife to seek interests outside of him; so, that his love for her will grow stronger... 😑
+Paul Metzger I was in Jr High when this came out and that was a fairly sad period for me. Also, it came out in winter time, as I recall. A lot of bad things happened to me in 1982 so that's why I feel bittersweet when listening to this song.
Same here. It was one of those songs Mtv played a lot in early 83 and it has that really melancholy feel to it and it takes me back to being at home as a middle school kid as well.
After well over thirty years, this song still brings tears to my eyes. You don’t need overblown production or choreography to make a classic. Just tell a simple story that we can relate to. Joe Jackson was a breath of fresh air in the early 80s, and I still love to listen to his music.
White teen in western Canada when I first heard it.He changed me from ACDC to music, saw him live at Roy Thomson Hall in T.O when I hit eighteen. Luv ya Joe
My female friend in college used this as one of her wedding songs, she said it really is not a break up song but about the strength of love, I've never forgotten that.
This song makes me feel like it's a rainy Saturday afternoon in 1984, the internet hasn't been invented yet, and so I have to just stay home and watch Mr. Mom on television.
Genius chord changes. Listen to this in the middle of a relationship breakdown it will leave a lump in your throat or holding back tears. The lyrics fit perfect with every chord change, such a sad song. A very well crafted classic 👌
Anyone else hear Badfinger's "Day After Day" in the opening notes? Definitely one of the best JJ songs. That piano fill is so beautiful and makes it timeless; the bendy synth solo makes it so '80s!

Like most Americans I had never been interested in anything beyond our own borders but that trip made me realize that there was a whole other world out there. I hope to go back soon. Unfortunately, my marriage didn't have the happy ending as was the case with this video. But during the good times, the "staying home and staring into each other's eyes" brings back very fond memories.
They don’t make music like this anymore. Loved this when I was a kid in the 80’s. I always had a strong connection with music, ended up getting a guitar at age 12 and haven’t looked back! Joe Jackson in my opinion never got the recognition he deserved!
He wrote a great book about growing up,going to music school, meeting Graham Many, playing rock and roll and ends when...he gets his first deal. Sheer class.
I was 24 when this came out,,at the time i thought it was brilliant and now ,,,,,,its still brilliant.....like some other comments Joe Jackson was vastly underrated ,,anyway i think he"s great.
to J bLACK. SECONDED. His upward spirals at the end of a phrase and then the off-beat tempo of the drums which he echoes are iconic. totally under appreciated.
Love this song and Joe Jacksons music since I heard it as a little child back in 1982 and 1983. Joes music and this song brings back AWESOME magical childhood memories of scenes of the mystical English countryside combined with moderness of early 1980s here also combined with the syfy/fantasy movies, shows, etc of back then such as Time Bandits. The video with the English countryside, scenes of old mystical and modern England, ALL combined with the way Joe Jacksons music sounds here ALL brings an AWESOME mystical feel and excitement to me still as an adult just as much as over 40 years ago when I was a little child. LOVE IT! Too, i should mention that I have always had a fascination with the UK England and all the mystical countryside with the mideval and ancient beautiful stone gothic architecture, castles, etc..ALL being combined with modern architecture, futuristic technology all coming together producing an exciting kind of vibe and feeling for me. Thank you for this video and song!
Es cierto, por lo menos en este video, se conjugan la hermosa música de JJ, la arquitecta, el clima nebuloso del lugar, generando sensaciones bonitas, pero muy difíciles de explicar. Saludos
Found out about the album from my younger sister in about 84 or so, and instantly fell in love with it. Unfortunately, my sister died in a car accident in 93. Anything from Night and Day makes me think of her!
I love this song so much, but it hurts too much when I hear it. I'll forget about it, but then it will pop up somewhere and I'll listen to it five times, wallow in the heartache for awhile, then forget about it again. It doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
This video is a friggin time capsule. Watching it instantly brings you back to a simpler time. I think we can all at least agree with that. I look back on it with fondness, and happiness that I was around in that small sliver of time to be able to remember when it happened
Joe Jackson might have been one of the most underrated artists of the 80’s? Love his songs and they still hold up now.
I think because he share the same name as Michael Jackson’s father.
He actually started in the late 70s,and was a contemporary of The Cars,Prince,John Cougar Mellancamp,Pat Benatar,Dire Straits.
Jackson is a popular last name. It's coincidental.
True, but this song is kinda stolen from badfinger
My girl and I were having an argument one time, and this came on MTV. We stopped, looked at each other, and this became "our" song through courtship and marriage, until the day she died.

I got the album as a young boy. Great music.
This got me through the 80s! Always loved Joe Jackson!
Love Joe Jackson they can't even write songs like this anymore simply genius
No way, Jackson is a real artist. He does everything since composing, playing the piano and singing.
I saw him play guitar live... Everyone laughed. He was terrible. But then he laughed as well. And played another hour of pure genius
He was unbelievable…
Course there are great songs around today. Music evolves.

he really is
@@MERTASAN oh yes lol x
God the video alone is so beautiful and picturesque
Melancholy takes overat the beginning of this beautiful song. Thanks Joe xx
Man this is an exceptional song , well played
Joe looks like a guardian angel in this video .
probably....he mentally messaged her not to board the train and go back home. Never considered that before.
Greatest song in the history of everything.
This reminds me of the love of my life that I lost back in the 80's.
This is a masterpiece
My soul feels something undescriptable when listen to this song
Night and Day? A gem.
God I love this song. Most of us could probably say this song is therapy in the moment for that certain person in our lives. Thanks Joe.
you should listen to Badfinger Day after Day
The girl who was trying to run away is really super cute. She fits perfectly into this song and video.
Expression
Miss this song. Heard it and couldn't stop clicking replay.
almost 30 years hearing this song.... it is a masterpiece!!! ✌
Roy Mora I so agree. My 22 yr. son loves Ariana and Lourdes. He needs this.

Unfortunately, my marriage didn't have the happy ending as was the case with this video. But during the good times, the "staying home and staring into each other's eyes" brings back very fond memories.
I feel that line
"Stayin' home and stare into each other's eyes"practically foreshadowed the Covid-19 pandemic
They don’t make music like this anymore. Loved this when I was a kid in the 80’s. I always had a strong connection with music, ended up getting a guitar at age 12 and haven’t looked back! Joe Jackson in my opinion never got the recognition he deserved!
Same here dude! I was 11 when I got mine. My father played as well as his father and uncle, music runs deep in my bloodline.
I bought probably 5 albums by Joe Jackson through the '80s. I could not get enough of his music at one stage. The man was and is fucking brilliant.
Same here, got each album as they came out. And each one was completely different, surely the mark of a true musician always exploring new things.
Yes.I love when MTV would play videos all day and night too, along with the VJ's.Loved this song and "Stepping Out".
Joe's bass player Graham Maby is an absolute magician. One of the best bassists I've ever heard.
He wrote a great book about growing up,going to music school, meeting Graham Many, playing rock and roll and ends when...he gets his first deal. Sheer class.
I was 15 when this came out. An amazing song and the nostalgia that the video stirs in me leaves me teary eyed.
I was 24 when this came out,,at the time i thought it was brilliant and now ,,,,,,its still brilliant.....like some other comments Joe Jackson was vastly underrated ,,anyway i think he"s great.
Recently saw JJ on a trip back east. He really showed appreciation to his fans (new and old). Listen to his immense volume and array of music
I was 13 yeah he didn't get a lot of recognition as an artist.
I turned 14 yrs old in 1982, and remember, and love this song, and video well...those were the early days of MTV, and they were good days.
I remember I was 23! always was fond of Joes' music!
Might Cover This Song!~
to J bLACK. SECONDED.
His upward spirals at the end of a phrase and then the off-beat tempo of the drums which he echoes are iconic.
totally under appreciated.
Thanks. I don't know much about music, but I knew some subtle things were going on here.
I miss the 80s
This is when MTV played music on TV.
Yep!!.. music left with the 1900's
I don’t think people have no clue how great this song is and it’s message. One of my all time favorites
You don’t not speak bad.
I remember hearing this on the radio a lot when I was a small child in Australia. There is something soothing about his music..very placating.
If you like early joe Jackson then me and you can be friends. He’s criminally underrated.
Saludos
If he were a handsome lad he'd be dam near a superstar. That's human nature.
4th grade. march of 83. first got cable. mtv SHOWED REAL VIDEOS.. and this was one of them..
I was just leaving middle school, entering high school. Best time ever to be a young person. I wish the world could have stayed like that.
I was 3rd grade & had older brothers. Music & earliest MTV were awesome days.
Third grade too. We are about the same age. What a good time back then, eh?
Night and Day. Just a brilliant album.
A Classic
John Spartan Agreed 100%
It's up there...
Found out about the album from my younger sister in about 84 or so, and instantly fell in love with it. Unfortunately, my sister died in a car accident in 93. Anything from Night and Day makes me think of her!
His Opus no doubt
2021. Still embarking the same emotional roller-coaster after all these years! Timeless 🎵 Love this song. This artist
I love this song so much, but it hurts too much when I hear it. I'll forget about it, but then it will pop up somewhere and I'll listen to it five times, wallow in the heartache for awhile, then forget about it again. It doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
One of the better videos from the MTV era.
lebarosky one of the better songs from any era.
This song should get more Radio airplay.
After 30 yrs i would think its been played out
This video is a friggin time capsule. Watching it instantly brings you back to a simpler time. I think we can all at least agree with that. I look back on it with fondness, and happiness that I was around in that small sliver of time to be able to remember when it happened
What a beatiful story! It is a poetry!
