- Today I address one of the most common questions we get asked and share everything I can think of about Maggie's harness, from where to get on, to how we use it, to how people tend to react when she's wearing it. For our child on the autism spectrum who elopes pretty constantly it has been life changing because it gives her freedom to not have to hold hands with us all the time when we're outside of an enclosed area. And that has been a very good thing.

Welcome to Someday I'll Sleep Autism Vlogs! We talk a lot about autism around here because as a family with two kids on the autism spectrum we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. I died when my 5 year son eloped at the playground for the first time. I sat in the high way holding him because he almost was hit by a car. I was crying while he was laughing at me. Thinking this was game. I haven't been right in my soul since that day. Thank you so much for posting this video! 💜
I LOVE your humor about the situation. My 3yo LOVE her harness vest and demands it be on, especially when our 1yo wears it. She doesn't need it but she LOVES the physical feedback. We were someplace outdoors with dangerous briges and trails. I wasn't worried at all she would slip away, but she was super anxious. We put a baby leash on our little one because she's chaos personified. My 3yo demanded one. She felt safe and happy. Someone had to comment about 6 adults and BOTH kids being on a leash. But you know what? I realized that I don't have time to be embarrassed. She was happy and she wanted to be on a harness/leash. If she wanted to wear a princess dress all day, that'd be socially acceptable. Why not this? People get so entitled to opinions on things they have no business talking about.
Exactly! I always love your comments! ❤️ And you’d think people would realize that on a hike with obstacles like that a lot of little kids won’t love constantly holding hands but will be happy with their harness.
I’ve noticed lately when both our girls have them on we get a much worse reaction too.

Those kind of people don't know the struggles we have with our special lil ones out in public , so definitely don't pay them no mind . I've been a widowed dad raising my autistic/special needs son since he was 6months old till present , it has been a nightmare taking him in stores or even out in public even before the pandemic , the toy isle always was a true test & brought out every angry Karen & Kens ugly looks ( but I always put a stop to them taking it any farther ) the safety harness definitely seems like a great idea to keep your lil Angel safe , no complaints here , God Bless you both 👍🏾

You got me through a crisis today. My 5 year old eloped today, the third time in 2 weeks. I'm slowly getting to the realization he can't be without a harness. It's not easy to predict what will get him running. You said so many things I've thought. I don't care about the looks we get, his safety is first. It's the thought that I'm not giving him a chance of being a kid like everyone else.
Thank You Soooo much for this I ordered the double leash couldn't afford the besi vest but got reflective safety vest with similar shape this is a lifesaver I was using Wheelchair for control My Son elopes he's 11 runs like a deer 2yrs ago he sneaked out the sliding door was missing over an hour he now wears Angelsense monitor. He's bigger wants more freedom he walks but runs so fast this helps Us because most Parks don't have a gate or fence this allows him to run and play Freedom Thanks Awesome Mom👑💝🙏🏽

Hi, my son just turned nine, he has that exact same harness for the bus. I just recently decided to get the leads for him. Eloping has always been a huge issue, and I always have like the death grip on his hands when we are out in public, I recently had a really scary thing happen where he ran in to traffic so now I have the “leads” on him when we go out, I was reAlly feeling bummed about it and I just wanted to say your video made me feel better and can really relate. 💕💕 all the best to you and your family #subscribed

That's interesting the responses you get 💓💓 I remember when I first watched your vlogs, and this was only the second one, I just remember feeling puzzled when I saw her on the leash, but I didn't judge I was just confused, and I always continue things I start, and once I saw more videos I quickly realized 'Oh she elopes that makes sense.'
Even before I found that out I could tell she was on the spectrum, in a good way I didn't know her age at that point, but it was just her behaviour that gave it away, and I'm on the spectrum myself♡♡
People should never judge what they don't know or don't understand, so nice to hear how lovely others can be, I was only a little confused at first but never for a second judged, I've never liked how others can be judgemental ❤💙💜💚

She looks good in her harness. They are a lot of fun at amusement parks as long as they can hook to roller coasters and other rides. Harnesses stroller and wheelchairs Are always good for someone tired and still wants to enjoy stuff
Hey, I'm not sure if you thought of this or if it would work for you- but what if you attatched something to Maggie's harness that says ''I have special needs''.. ? Something that will let people know breifly why you have the harness on her, maybe a car seatbelt strap might work, anything really, a badge? I'm not sure if this is necessary really but... just suggesting. :3

I honestly like this idea! I think it helps in the event of emergency response or if she somehow got out and eloped with her harness on!! I have autism in the front and phone number on tag or something similar?

Thank you! We got this one, originally, from the bus company, and then later purchased another from a bus supply store, because she'd worn out the original one.
Hi ,thank you very much for for the links you provided. I researched the net for hours and finally thanks to you I came across the BESI PRO TECH IV. It states that it is used for school buses, I hope to hear soon from them to know if it will fit my car and about the cost. It completely eliminates the car seatbelts and the straps are similar to her convaid stroller. THANK YOU,THANK YOU!!!!
You’re welcome! I hope it works. We do use ours with a seat belt too, using the seat belt in case of crashes and the Besi because she’s an escape artist! We also use a buckle buddy to keep her from unlatching the seat belt. I hope that helps and I hope you get a good response from the company.

This harness looks similar to the one my daughter uses for the bus. But how do you implement using it for the car? Mine opens the door on our car by rolling the window down and opening from outside… There is a window lock but I don’t know how to do child safety lock on her door in the car I use. I don’t have my own car either so I use my bf’s.
harnesses in general should be mainstream for kids of all ages out in public, nurotypical or special needs.
Thank you for sharing, we are looking at various harnesses, this was helpful. If I may ask, does your daughter have any collagen issues, I recently found this out about myself with my mother's help we put various facts together and in talking to others we find those with collagen issues have autistic issues they deal with and visa versa. If yes she does have collagen issues is there a test for it? If no will you test for it or look into it, why or why not? Some of us have noticed a connection to the gut, collagen and and sensitivites since the body is lacking in the right amounts of collagen for whatever the reason. I am not judging here just hoping to collect more info to help myself and my family. Thank you again, your daughter is adorable. The last question, have you worked with service dogs with the autistic? If you can share anything on that too. Blessings to your journey.
So does she elope because her sensory seeking is to seek a boundary? (I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense) If being in the harness is calming; then is it lowering the desire to elope because it's feeding this need?
I think that the harness is calming because she knows she can’t run and because of the proprioceptive input of the squeezing. I do think that desire for proprioceptive input plays a role in her eloping, because a lot of time she’s barefoot and she really seems to enjoy that, but I think there’s other motivation too (she seems to think it’s hilarious).

So, this harness is actually designed for buses, so we just use it to make sure that none of our kids who like to get out of their seats get out of their seat belts. We purchased a strap that wraps around the seat that the harness connects to from a bus company, but it isn't tested for cars.
We were pretty desperate though. We had bought a harness recommended from another CZcams family and had it welded into the car at a local shop and she was able to get out of that one in about five minutes.
I'm so glad she likes her harness... though I can imagine idiots don't realize what exactly is going on with her.
It’s always disappointing when people have those reactions. Hopefully with more awareness and acceptance it happens less and less! ❤️
5:00 I think the anger is justified because they don't know why you put her in a harness, to them it's just a parent that abuse their kid and they care about your kid. If they say something, just explain them shortly why it's necessary. I don't think they angry because they are bad people, the opposite, they care about the kid.
I guess that you might think the same if you saw parents do that and not knowing about autism and eloping.
I wouldn’t say ignorance is a justification for rage. And we aren’t abusing her. I’m also autistic. Social interactions aren’t easy for me. Particularly not with hostile people who look ready to attack. Holding hands is physically painful for her. The thing is every stranger we meet isn’t entitled to our time during a fun day or an explanation about her neurology.

Especial needs or not I don't think people should judge parents who opt to use kids leashes, like maybe 9 years old it's a little too big for a neurotipical child to be wearing a leash, but if it's a toddler it actually gives them more freedom and safety than the amount they'd have in a stroller or holding hands with their parents, just because it looks wrong doesn't mean it is.
That is cruel an unusual and abusive and it should be a law to protect minors and I don’t give a crap if your child tries to run away but carry her instead I do not support this cruel and evil everyone that does this is the 😈 you treating her like a dog and everyone else that does this is treating their child like a dog I am furious and mad and angry this is not right this is a Child and human rights being violated
Hi IFA. Maggie would be miserable if she was carried. She is miserable when she has to hold hands. Do you see the smile on her face in this? It's because it gives her a freedom that she wouldn't otherwise have. She also has sensory processing issues and this harness gives her input that she needs to process the world around her. She asks to wear it and we've had to limit the amount of time that she wears it. It's something that we've consulted with doctors, therapists and social workers.
I'm an autistic adult. There are many things that are done to autistic children that are cruel. This isn't one of them. I get that you obviously don't understand this. But that doesn't make it wrong or cruel. I'm thankful it was an option when she needed it so that she could have more freedom. Not less.
Please watch her eloping videos and then judge her. Or better yet, keep it to yourself and don't be rude about it. 🤷🏻♀️ Just a thought?

Agreed. People should not treat other people like anything less than fully human. That isn’t what this is. But I’m guessing you didn’t even watch the video to begin to understand why this harness gives my daughter, who is disabled, more freedom than she would otherwise have if I had to tightly hold on to her arm all the time, and keeps her safe from running off which she is constantly trying to do as a result of her disability. Your comment is a perfect example of why I made this video and why my channel exists.
