Autism| The Last Week of Summer DITL
Welcome to Autmazing! We talk a lot about autism around here because we are a family with five kids and a mom who is autistic. We believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post videos daily (or almost daily), about topics that we feel are important and sometimes there's a vlog thrown in too. We think it's important to see that being autistic is just that- another way of being human. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in the midwest.
We are a family of 6, with a Mom named Cammie. Sadie is 15, Maggie is 13, Patrick is 11, James is 9, and Tessie is now 7!

      It’s interesting how some people can’t let any important topic stand without trying to tie it in to their favorite talking point. Weird, right?

  • @elljay7111
    @elljay7111 Před 8 dny

    and you must have lived a very privileged life. thank goodness for that. however, for the rest of the real world, where punishment, neglect, unfair circumstances, trauma victims become nonverbal; all this happens without any dd's and the children become ??? parents of aba therapy recipients care enough that their loves are hurting inside and unable to communicate and ABA assists them in finding a voice, among a myriad of other assets.

    • @Autmazing
      @Autmazing Před 8 dny

      The sad thing is that parents of children put in ABA think they’re doing what’s best for their child, while making them more vulnerable to abuse and putting them in a situation that has been proven again and again to cause trauma. But let’s not talk about that, right? Because it makes them more compliant and knowing the long term ramifications is really uncomfortable for the people who love to shove it down our throats. Yes, autistic children may benefit from different supports than their peers. No, ABA is not the answer. Causing long term trauma is not the answer. Even when it’s hard and uncomfortable for parents. History will not look kindly on ABA. We’re already seeing that. You may want to rethink being an apologist for it.

    Great job mom..my kids were competitive swimmers from age of 6.. your last video made me extremely uncomfortable thinking about all the potential problems that could occur. I commented and you countered thinking it was " off the mark". Respectfully, any precaution i noted that could avoid a problem was given with good intentions. But you rose up and with the vests on, they actually seemed to be having more fun.

      As an Aussie I had similar thoughts watching them swimming at the lake. Rashies are so much safer both from a water safety point of view (tshirts get heavy when wet) but also sun safety seeing as tshirts lose so much sun protection when they are wet.

    I hope you take this constructively.. 5 kids in the water regardless of your proximity is tough to watch especially when they are jumping on one another. We saw one choke a little with water and all it would take is that it happens while another is jumping on them. I wish all kids would " be responsible " when asked but ground rules and precautions didn't seem to be in place. If there was a seizure and one of the kids went under..a brighter suit or some sort of floatation device attached might be the difference in time needed to bring a child up in lake water where visibility isn't that great.. or what if one eloped and you need to drop everything and leave them in the water with the older daughter? This may seem like overkill but look up how many kids drown a year. This isn't saying you aren't doing your job..but please consider floatation devices..( yes..even if they " know" how to swim) and maybe stop the jumping on each other where one kid is pushed underneath the water. Maybe even a discussion about how to exit the lake if you have to get out promptly.. this can all be done without ruining a good time at the lake.

    • @Autmazing
      @Autmazing Před 18 dny

      Hi. I appreciate your concern. I was a lifeguard for eight years and a water safety instructor for most of those. I've actually had a lot of discussions, particularly before we go to the lake, about water safety, with all the kids. And they definitely know not to push each other under. Just because you don't see me having the conversation, doesn't mean it didn't happen and that's a pretty big assumption, right? We actually did get life jackets this past week, because the kids really want to do the paddle boats and I thought it would be good for them to have their own. However, with just about 99% of our access to water being in lakes, I appreciate that the swim lessons I am doing with out kids, aren't best done with a lifejacket on. So I'm working on balancing that. When we went to another local lake without the lines and lifeguard, they do wear their jackets. Anyways, again, I appreciate the concern. Water safety is hugely important to me, having lifeguarded in pools and at lakes. But again, the assumptions you made missed the mark.

    • @leylahigdon9444
      @leylahigdon9444 Před 17 dny

      I also was a lifeguard, swam competitively, as did my kids all the way through college and even to Olympic trials..but I was still overly concerned in lakes with limited visibility. There are plenty of parents out there that have experienced the loss of a child that they felt they kept a good eye on. While they didn't " push each other under" to have one ride the back of another small kid could be problematic if he was to choke. I know you are filming in close proximity with an older child present, please don't think that your abilities mean you can handle any problem that arises. Eloping, seizures,choking can quickly lead to attention being diverted from a child..something could even happen to you. Precautions can make the difference in avoiding a problem..and only a minute is needed to experience one.. I hesitated commenting because I think sometimes parents can become defensive of their kids which I totally get..but I gave you legit concerns that I would give to ANY parent..regardless if their kids had autism or not. I just saw the newest video WITH the vests! I complimented the choice you made as their parent to use them.. and by the looks of it, everyone had a good time.

    In my experience having worked as a BT in ABA as well as being on the Autistic Spectrum myself. Many ABA practitioners mask being nice people. When I went to the team meetings, it felt like walking into an Aldous Huxely distopia where no one had the right to be unhappy. Well when being unhappy about something is not allowed, then the BT's, BCBA's, and BM's are by default going to mask being positive and happy. Make no mistake though. The culture within many ABA companies has a bunch of back stabbers and drama queens. If you are an Autistic employee, they will immediately target you, put words in your mouth that you did not say, spread rumors about you, and do whatever they could to make the work environment uncomfortable for you. I wash my hands of ABA. It is abuse. Most ABA practitioners are fake and the ones who keep it real, don't stay with the company long.

  • @lindarodriguez8995
    @lindarodriguez8995 Před měsícem

    Thank you for sharing your story about ABA and your children. The idea that a child should be "trained" to behave in a way that makes them more acceptable to others is abhorrent to me! Both my husband and I were diagnosed with ASD in the last few years. I was considered an "odd" child, a moniker that I accept with enthusiasm now. In order to try to survive the bullying that I faced every day at school, I became a mimic and a good actress. It was so bad that I felt like I could be myself only when I was acting in a play! I have used what I now understand as masking from the age of 6 onwards. I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to follow my passions and who loved me unconditionally at home. I was treated no differently than my siblings and so, while I was punched, kicked, and called names without mercy at school (I am an older adult, and back in my day, there was one teacher who went out with us to recess and lunch and they were usually tied up with the loud students who were misbehaving. As a result, since I was very quiet and was becoming more so as the abuse continued, the teacher never seemed to see me.) I went home to a sanctuary filled with love and peace. Many people could not say the same thing, so I am very grateful to my parents. ABA has always sounded to me like something I wouldn't do to an animal, let alone a human being. Fortunately for me, I was born in the early 60's so ABA had not reached our mostly rural area. Also, "girls don't have ASD" was a definite thought process at that time. I am so glad that my parents will never have the feelings of guilt that you have suffered. I would say to you, please put that guilt away. You have at all times been a good mother. You were given what was thought of as an ideal treatment by adults who should have known better. You are making sure that anyone who watches your channel understands the things you wish you had known about before making your decisions so that their children don't have to suffer ABA. I say you are a hero. Thank you.

    ABA being the only evidence based method isn't true. In 2016 Active Musical Therapy studies shows how many on the spectrum end up greatly increasing the quality of life for those on the spectrum. Learning music helps with: short term memory, aggression control, (that part was proven), selective attention, and sensory perception. (heavily evidenced). After that, you have theatre therapy. That improves communication. These therapies actually improve neuro connections in the brain that may be tenuous or underdeveloped due to their particular autism.
