It's been a while now since I last played Galactic Civilizations IV, but I'm so glad I jumped back in, because the Supernova Edition which just arrived on Steam, is so much more polished and content-filled than the game was almost two years ago, so if you're brand new or a returning player, there's a lot of new stuff to see here!
My favorite thing about GCIV: Supernova has to be the way the game eases you into its main concepts. This is a game that can demand hours and even days or weeks of gameplay, but in those first few hours, the game does a great job of taking it slow, and of handing you just enough mechanics and gameplay aspects so it doesn't overwhelm you. But when the game opens up further, and you become even more comfortable with its systems and get a feel for how everything works, that's when that sense of "just one more turn" kicks in, especially because turn times in this game are super fast.
Compared to some of the more simulation type sci-fi 4X strategy games out there like Stellaris or Distant Worlds 2 then, Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova comes across as a lot more approachable and seamless, especially because of it's unique and open galaxy and star system feature, even though there is so much more to do and explore here than to look at a pretty campaign map ;)

I bought Galactic Civilisations II 8 years ago and I still haven’t played it. Maybe I should.
Great video i havent played this series. but I do have Distant World 2 which i was very hyped for but still need to properly learn/understand it. GC4 is up next though--playing tall sounds really fun!
I played GC3 a bit. It didn't really take. But I'm willing to see if this vid can make me come back. Civ and Paradox games certainly keep pulling me back in
Thank you for your review of this game.
My pleasure! :)
Jeez, definitely the wrong time to lure me into a devastating black hole, with Christmas knocking at the door and plenty of work to do. I'm one of those who prefer GalCiv over Stellaris & Co and I must say, the newest version looks nice. Will definitely take a deeper look. The AI race generation sounds fun and if the shipbuilding has kept its fascination (even if I don't truly like the more cartoonish style), I'm in. After New Year, when I can put myself into social hibernation for a month or two.
Awesome! Well, if you're looking for something great, it's staring you in the face ;)
@@AndysTakeIf the newest version still appeals to (very) old-fashioned PC gamers who love epic battles and grand strategy, then I'm definitely in. The only drawback is the lack of strategic battle management which I enjoyed in MO2 and Pax Imperia, but shipbuilding is hella fun - if it's not tuned down. Had GalCiv4 already on my wishlist but was still deciding if to stick with it or try something else. You encouraged me to remain loyal. Thanks!
I first played Galactic Civilizations all those years ago and fell in love. Then Stellaris came around and I fell in love with that. I love both equally and I do find Gal Civ more approachable, however Stellaris fills some deep needs as well. One is Microsoft... the other Apple. Both do what they do well. I love playing them both.
@@Smenkhaare Yes, it's a matter of preferences I think. I need to pass on GalCiv 4 anyway, they request a min. 1920 screen resolution which I don't have. Guess I'll stick to Baldur's Gate 3 first ;-)
When you are able to play Gal Civ... you won't be disappointed. It is one of those games that you can pick up when you are ready. I don't find it to be a drop everything and get title. This is a good thing, as you can take your time in picking it up. Once in the system is forgiving enough for you to figure things out as you play. It is like an old Civilization IV or V game. Good fortune. @@JustARandomFio
It kind of reminds me of a more 4X version of Sins of a Solar Empire, especially with the culture stuff :) that was a cool game though more of an RTS.
This game was made by the same devs who made Sins of a Solar Empire
I just don't understand why modern sci fi strategy games can't have battles like empire at war and homeworld. surely developers can manage this 20 years later?
those games are shallow on the grand strategy side of things
May I introduce to you Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion and Sins of a Solar Empire II (currently in Alpha).
No Andy, this game has not dethroned Stellaris, because one is a turn based strategy and the other is a real time strategy.
The only games that can really compete with Stellaris are: Distant Worlds 2 and,
Aurora 4X(a free ULTRA indept ULTRA deep 4X Spreadsheet game😅🤣)
No.
Stellaris was dethroned by Endless Space 2, which was dethroned by Distant Words 2. This looks like a progression from ES2, but doesn't touch the depth of DW2.
endless space 2 never dethroned stellaris and distan worlds 2 just got in a playable state not long ago the game is still lacking a lot stellaris is still number 1 player count dont lie neither do reviews
Stellaris can never be dethroned as the Premier space 4x game, its way more deep and complex than anything out at the moment and the vast amount of updates and DLC it gets just keeps it at the top, Endless Space 2 is nevertheless a very good game though, and I'm tempted by GalCiv4 aswel
Stellaris has been dethroned for a while by Endless Space 2 though
yeah youre smoking crack
I would have to disagree, I have played and love both games for what they are. But hands down Stellaris is by far the more in depth and complex space grand strategy. You can do so much more in Stellaris than you can in ES2. That being said ES2 has excellent faction design & playstyles, the ship customisation is really good and cinematic battles are cool too.
@@Zarken26 I didn't find Stellaris deep or complex but has too much busy work especially on planet management. DLC totally change the game and seem to increase planet management.
(With 4x games there is such a thing as too many DLC which ends up breaking stuff. I'm hoping this doesn't happen with GalCiv4.)
@@Zarken26stellaris is deep in a lot of respects (civic and administrational things) but shallow in a lot of others. All factions can research all the same military tech to the same level, all can build the same ships once they've researched that tech (but with a different coat of paint), and for me and a lot of others this makes subsequent playthroughs boring being more military/domination minded. There's no faction flavour or strengths/weaknesses there.
Planet and system management in Stellaris can become quite tedious and is sometimes too opaque. Stellaris really tries to be Crusader Kings in space. That is usually a good formula, however it can be off putting to newer players.@@smidlee7747
