How Muskogee County continues to forget 1,000 dead people

  • Are hundreds of people buried in an abandoned Muskogee County cemetery being carelessly looked over? Or is the disregard intentional?
The historic cemetery is located on private property and the property owner died nearly a year ago. Someone out of state pays the taxes on the land every year, but no restoration work has begun on the cemetery inside of it.

This cemetery needs to be cleaned up, furthered researched and allowed outside access to it. What a treasure to find a Muscogee Creek cemetery in what once was their tribal capital in I.T! Glad that the Oklahoma Historical Society and Muscogee Creek Tribe are now involved!!

My wife and I stumbled across a previously unknown (by us) Creek Freedmen church/community between Bristow and Shamrock called Spring Creek where their old church still stands. The Oklahoma Historical Society has a great picture of it with their church congregation standing in front of it

Someone needs to call the local news channels so light can be shed! Sounds like you may be that someone, even if you only know the whereabouts of just one of them!!

That was a very wealthy community there are government destroyed. Sad but true, the most messed up thing about it is, the descendants of those people, will never know because our government is so corrupt, that they will never tell the truth. Reparations should go to the descendants of the Aboriginal people of the land, or as they are called now African Americans.

According to some recently found death certificates, Bass Reeves is buried in Harding Memorial Cemetery which unfortunately has been neglected much the same way.

@@roberthammons6353 Hi! Then this Bass Reeves Story is sure gettin' Catfish Juicy. Who all here remembers the possible true tale of Bass Reeves going out to retrieve his own Son for a crime he committed? Just how old was his Boy then? I live in L.A. these days but we got a lot of Family Clan Souls resting comfortably over at the Booker T Cemetery out on 32nd St/Highway 69 in Muskogee. There's a Skillful Gardner Man, "Darryl" on the grounds keeping the place looking dang good.

I'm glad that VNN, is following the paper trail. So Mvskoke Freedman are buried here? How do we get in touch with the the two ladies featured in the story? I wonder has the Mvskoke Nation, in Okmulgee, been made aware of this story. I will email VNN because something needs to be done.

Thank you for your feedback! You can get in touch with the Muscogee Creek Indian Freedmen Band here www.1866creekfreedmen.com/ they are working to acquire the cemetery. The Mvskoke Nation will not step in until that happens, I believe. -Britttany

Okay I don't believe that the cemetery is going to be taken care of by the people that are buried there and I don't also feel that the taxpayer needs to be footing the bill for the care of these headstones either and so the only solution is to leave it alone

Aaww.. Well if the old Cemetery got "cleaned up", an interactive website for it would allow Folks to comment, guess, and accurately figure out who's who in there pushin' up the daisies amid the poison ivy. I'm currently busy makin' sure the bigger Muskogee *Booker* *T.* *Washington* Cemetery (maybe just down the road a bit from The Agency One) stays lookin' in fine shape. The Caretaker there is named Darrell, and he knows of a cool group of Military Army Vets who know how to rent some huge hog brush lawn mowers and clear crap out.

@@Outlaw1103 Thank You, but Good God Amighty I had no idea I already responded here last year! I think I done spelled Gravesite Caretaker Darrell's Name wrong (in my later post). But at least I know our Army Military Boys are still living nearby, thus could be of some Cemetery Assistance. Going forward, now that we finally have Bass Reeves TV Series and Movies in the works, now is the perfect time to "get the balll rolling" on Restoring 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐂𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 even beyond its Old Glory Days. Yes there's probably a bunch of Cotton-Mouth Water Moccassin Snakes lurking in the shrubs but you'd be really surprised at what a big Hog Trimmer Machine can do up in there. Ya'll will be able to easily enjoy a Watermelon Picnic there after them guys leave.
