    To be fair, the trend also goes hand-in-hand with the fact that most of the younger drivers mentioned are settled in a team, whereas their older teammates have moved for this season and are still getting to grips with the car, particularly over a race distance.
    Enjoyed this in-depth look. Will be fascinating to see how these intra-team battles develop over this 23 race season.

    • @CYMotorsport
      @CYMotorsport  Před 3 lety +35

      yeah that's one way to put it though IMO the performances don't reflect that. you don't get doubled up by simply switching. I mean ricciardo thrashed ocon after switching. vettel was already getting thrashed by a driver who switched. and was younger haha. carlos is probably the one I would put down to facing a driver embedded in the team. I have no doubt about that one. ricciardo I can't say that's the reason. he's way too far off. it's early to say for nando. he looked good enough on the hard step compounds that he might start to pick it up after a couple more races. but man ocon finally looks good

      @@CYMotorsport yeah that's true regarding Seb, and I agree Nando is a tricky one to judge at the moment, also taking his time away into account. I guess you could say Ocon's year out helped Ricciardo to thrash him in that sense, but I get you. Ultimately it's all relative and there's multiple factors at play, each situation having its own nuances. Makes it all the more gripping to watch in the end.
      Oh and definitely good to see Esteban on it, even from me as an Alonso fan. He needs this stability. Many thought he was done, and while he's by no means safe, he's finally showing his talent again.

Why don't they do what they do on F1TV for pit lane except get people to ONLY cover the midfield, and backmarkers and let ppl pick? the goal over the next 24 months is to get really knowledgable analysts on this channel to ONLY focus on teams then give everyone an outlet for live commentary for their team. the fact that F1 doesn't do that given their scope is kinda wild. but hard to blame anyone who only has the TV coverage. you're at the mercy of the bogus coverage staring at lewis and max for 305 kms

    Just a thought, most of the examples of older drivers being out performed by their younger counterparts also have something else in common. They are mostly all new to their teams, and with the severe lack of practice at the start of this season, I’m sure this must contribute to this?
    Will be really interesting as the season unfolds and the likes of Vettel, Alonso and Riccardo get to spend more time getting used to their new cars, to see if this changes.

    Great video as usual! The drivers who changed teams over the winter have all been affected by the reduced testing days. It is uncharacteristic for Daniel to be this underwhelming against a team mate. Lando has simply used his experience and gotten better. Seb is Seb. He is criminally underwhelming. But Daniel, Seb and Alonso are all finding their feet slowly and we can expect things to switch around as the season progresses. The fact that Sainz drove an old Ferrari over the winter is helping him immensely. Seb on the other hand has had the fewest laps of an already curtailed testing. It's gonna be an interesting season.

    I think ur underestimating how big of a factor moving teams is for the drivers performance this early in the season. I have grown up with my father owning and operating motorcycle race teams and can tell u right now that switching machines will cause an upset in performance in most cases. We also have to consider something that is possibly even more important, and thats the time it takes for drivers to get comfortable with their new team, this can vary greatly based on a number of factors, and can sometimes have the largest impact on their performance (considering how integral the driver-technician relationship is for performance). Because of the numerous factors involved, the time it takes for a driver to get fully up to speed will vary, regardless of skill.

    Super excited to see how the Alpine team rivalry will play out, especially if it seems like the cars are gonna be in a position to score points for either driver more frequently.
    On Ocon, so far his career has been defined by being put into teams with an experienced and talented driver against him, and really having to fight to justify keeping his seat against more experienced hands. Alonso has been brutal to teammates in the past, but for once, Ocon may have the advantage by being the incumbent so to speak in the team, and this experience may be what gives him the opportunity to challenge as high as the car permits and become the leading man. The stakes are high however for him; I don't believe in the rumours of Gasly taking is seat as having any real merit, but Renault do have a number of young drivers really coming alive in F2, and Ocon will need to ensure he isn't beaten by Alonso to ensure that the seat is his for 2022.
    Meanwhile, Alonso is the one coming out of retirement, and of the three non-Hamilton champions, he definitely seems the hungriest for more wins and possibly a title shot if the 2022 regs fall right for Alpine. He'll still have his racing career with or without Formula 1 as his first retirement showed, but there is still a ton of expectation placed on him, and in his age every year counts, he really can't afford the year-long grace period before a teammate battle like Ricciardo and Sainz have. Alonso showed in Portugal that once he gets going, he can perform incredible feats, and beating Ocon would be a full declaration that he is back, and is ready to win. While Ocon is good though, compared to the other juniors he really isn't considered yet to be on the level of Verstappen or Leclerc, and possibly even Norris or Russell, and that reputation, true or not come the end of the season, will matter to the public, especially to Alonso. If he can't beat Ocon on equal terms, what chance does he have with the big boys who will likely have the edge in equipment?
    This mix of high drama, high stakes, and the in-flux nature of the team, definitely feels like it'll have the makings of the most fascinating team rivalry, even if it may be more low key than what some would predict.

    @Apis4 Před 3 lety

    I love this channel, I am always here on your videos.... but to be honest I would not say it is a trend.
    Not after three races.
    Some things to keep in mind.
    Ricciardo had his best pace yet this weekend, compared to the field and even Norris, where for about a 1/3 of the race, he was lapping FASTER than Lando, but due to leaving the call too late, as you say, just going a bit too long, and then calling for Hards when he was now inside the Soft option lap count, as well as f*cking Quali, doonted his weekend. That said, it is also worth noting that objectively speaking, he is coming to grips faster with this car, than he took to master his Renault. Norris is throwing all he has out now, knowing Ricciardo WILL get better, or at least, betting he does. I will wager that Ricciardo will be making these small gains over his previous weekends each one until the break, but I am not going to be surprised if he does not take the whole season, which someone people think. I think he will come to grips faster than anyone actually.
    Vettel too had his best weekend, and he was really strong, you can tell he's made something of a large leap compared to where he had, much more than Ricciardo. He was doing well, and he's had a weak car, and he's going to have to put a lot of work in developing that car, because it's been heavily retarded by the new regs, just as collateral damage. So you have to look at his arc as being something akin to Ricciardo last year, where he needs to be the genesis for most of what needs to happen with his car. Abeiteboul said that essentially, Ricciardo was the single biggest reason for the Renault of 2019 becoming the Renault of 2020. Vettel looks like he might need to the same.... but whilst facing a team perhaps less amenable to it than Renault, as all the people behind the AM project seem to have very definite ideas already about what to do and where they are going. So Vettel might be a third quarter or fourth one, bloomer. But this race gone showed how much he is improving. He does not need to improve like that all the time, just consistently, or not consistently, so long as when the next step happens, it is this big. He will too.
    Alonso is coming off the back of a long break, and very different racing. Ocon was right there with Daniel Ricciardo.... not on track, but off it, in house at the team, when the latter began to push them to go this direction, make that change, do X, focus on Y... and basically rebuilt the team to podium candidates. He is not only familiar with the car, but was observing at ground level, how the step forwards was exactly made, and how it felt each race whilst on that trajectory until it netted him a podium. Alonso was not there. He was not even in F1. He's essentially got to learn the car, as well as learn the way it which cars work with the new regs which retard the read end grip. Look at what he managed this weekend though. A MASSIVE leap. That should be a harbinger of more.
    Sainz has had one bade race, two good ones, and is still facing the fact he too needs to learn a new car... in a car which is not as good as the team's other cars, because now they cannot use a loophole the engine was engineered to use... they are not the best car, or even third best... MB, RBR and McLaren all have better, so this is always going to cause a him to look at little static. He has never looked like he is struggling as much as the aforementioned.... but he has had all the same work to do, in arguably machinery not much better than Vettel or Alonso, and worse than Ricciardo. But he is close to Ricciardo, they were equal on points until this race. That should tell you how good he is already in the car. You cant be that good in a brand new car without being naturally talent a racer, and if you are that naturally talented, you do not plateau, you adapt, and improved, and we need to see, because I reckon he will.
    Checo is already doing well, his biggest issue is Verstappen as a team mate. He could not improve, and still be doing all he needs to. Thing is, he out qualified Verstappen. That's a big scalp. Ok, meant little, and his race pace is not up there yet. But he has shown, on a single lap, he can put in something equal or better to Verstappen now. Way more than can be said for Gasly or Albon in that car, or even Kvyat (he techincally beat Riccardo on season, but that was Riccardo playing guinea pig much of the season, and lot of DNFs), he's arguably the closest thing to a worthy Ricciardo replacement they've had in that seat. That, for me, says there is a lot more to come, and he too will improve.
    All of these drivers have a lot more to give, and Vettel and Ricciardo made good gains this race gone, and Alonso made a MASSIVE one, and even if they did not perform as they might have hoped... Quali for both Checo and Chili showed what's there.
    So this is a premature trend to identify after just three races... it'll become a trend if we're still seeing it after the 51% point in the season. I suspect for half of these guys though, we WONT be. I guess you can tease me in September if I am wrong :p

    @quaggadon7544 Před 3 lety +1

    You do great research into your topics and I like that. However, I think your high level analysis may be a bit off. I think the pattern is more that those who have been with a team longer have been the ones pushing the charge. I think this is because they are more adjusted to their teams aero and engine design philosophy. This phenomenon lines up closely with the young drivers because teams mostly retained their young drivers last year. (Gasly v Yuki helps my case as the longer retained driver is doing better). Ricciardo was also losing to Hulkenverg at the start of 2019 but slowly adjusted to the car and team and came back on him. I expect something similar from him, Alonso etc but perhaps on an even slower time scale as we are so dee into the hybrid era and the younger drivers have reached such a high level of comfort with their teams by now. Even if ricciardo loses to Norris this year, I wouldn’t see it as a good indicator about next year under a new set of aero regs.

  • @aniru_dh21
    @aniru_dh21 Před 3 lety +1

    I think bottas is struggling psychologically as his seat is mostly going to George Russel and Hamilton saying he wants to stay on the grid for next year. I think to have strategic freedom for Red Bull I think they need checo. In McLaren every year from 2019 Lando made his debut he outperforms his teammate in the first three races. I think Carlos and Charles will be equally matched by the end of the year and if Ferrari produces a car that can championship then we can see glory days for them as see-through history. Alpine I think they need to focus on their aero package as they have been struggling during start of the season. I think the updates they have planned may work during the next couple of races. Aston Martin should stop taking fia to court rather than should work on their car issues where mercs are going ahead with their package whereas this team is not going ahead as seeing race pace it is evident. Alfa Romeo will finish ahead in class C as they have been outperforming both teams by quite a margin so it is still 8th. Williams still squanders their chances in a points-paying position like Imola crashing into bottas where it is still wet outside and this race starting from 11th. As Williams looks so much sensitive towards wind so they are chances are minimized in Portugal. As haas as given up on this year so it's up to the team to capitalize on the chances in the finish in few points-paying positions. I think who will switch to next year's development very early among the top 7 teams they have a very high chance of finishing top 3 positions and for the top 4, they have a high chance of winning at least one championship.

    Good points, but you need to remember the context those younger drivers are beating their experienced teammates. The latter are members of new teams and the testing was so limited they could never reach the same level as the guy on the other side of the garage. If this trend continues into next year as well then the trend will be true, but right now it's just a matter of acclimatization to a new car for the older drivers. Apart from Kimi and Giovinazzi who in average are pretty equally matched.

    I'm honestly surprised how many people are saying they didn't think Portugal was a good race. For me, while it may not have been quite as good as Bahrain or Imola, I still found it gripping in its own way throughout.

      1:1 correlation with how lopsided the coverage was. i noticed this doing live commentry on stream. i literally havent turned the F1 proper channel on in years. just the data and telemetry then pit lane sometimes. it makes a world of difference. watched portimao on the live main feed and good lord. it's just lewis vs max and the occasional overtake. no one even saw gasly's last lap fight haha

      The weather made imola good, remove the rain and they probably would have finished in grid order, just like in the good old days when it was a regular track fixture.
