When using adapted lenses on mft, i often find that using them wide open mutes contrast a lot. In some forum i found the opinion the 35mm sensor lenses flood the lightbox of the mft camera and you get reflections which do that to the contrast. Looking and dof i would say you stopped it down a tad... Did you use a hood?
After a bunch of videos watching about the rokinon 12mm t2.2 cine you're video sold me on the lens! Great video!! keep killing it dude!
I have a question for you Andrew, have you tried or have thought about trying for a review the new Rokinon Dsx line of cine lenses or even the Ds line of cine lenses? I have heard that the Dsx line have better coating on the lenses for flair and ghosting.
This video was 5 years ago...this is a Very beautiful area..my wife was the GM of Starbucks in Kimball junction a couple years before you made this video..
I have the newer 85mm version and never ever thought I wish this had more contrast. I even watched a dozen reviews before I pulled the trigger. I only do narrative film.
Did you happen to test the 35mm Rokinon at any point? Thanks in advance.
Thanks, nice video! quick question though, was that the normal 85mm T1.5 or the newer Cine DS version? I'm interested in getting a few lenses in the DS line and can't find a good comparison of the normal 85 T1.5 to the DS.
Non-ds. Good question. Some say the DS have better coating and are more consistent across the line. But I have no idea.
Denae & Andrew actually there seem to be 3 different versions, early non DS-not really good compared to DS version I and especially the latest version II with much better contrast, sharpness, flare resistance and all Versions II match in colour, so be sure to check out before you buy a new or the old ones.
Very nice video! Just a question - how does manual focus work with gimball? Is it convenient? And also - why do you use special cine lenses without a rig? My understanding was that without a rig it doesn't make a difference and you could just as well use photo version. Thanks.
When using a gimbal as a single operator you usually set the focus ahead of time and keep your subject in focus with your feet. There are gimbals which explore using a focus dial you can control on the gimbal, but traditionally you don't do this (just as you might manually focus with a glidecam).
As far as using a rig, the cine lenses have declicked apertures which means the iris is completely smooth. This is helpful for shots where you are moving exposures mid shot. Beyond that, they are just easier to manually focus, but otherwise, you are correct, no additional benefit.
what lens did you use in this video for the whole video? the 16mm?
Loved the edit nicely done 👍
thank you for the effort and the sharing. i very much like the music and can see the appeal of using it as the bed track. thumbs up.
Would you like give advice on which Rokinon cine lens should I buy first for my new BMPCC4k? Thanks
12mm, 16, 24, 35,85?
If it's just one, I'd recommend either 16 or 24.
I enjoyed your conference video very much. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the lenses. Certainly the 85's lack of contrast didn't jump out at me, but I usually find some of my critical faculties get suspended when I'm drawn into a video. Did you shoot this originally at 4K or HD?
Thanks! It was in 4k
Andrew, just reviewed your B&W film test, as Fujufilm announced the discontinuation of Acros film (I threw a link to your film on the FujiRumors site) and I was thinking that your new place should be amazing for the 120 color medium film format... any chance to see such a fantastic production from you?
I need to finish my 120 black and white (100 speed) comparison first. But color is definitely on the list.
Nice video! Very cool effects 👍
Hey Andrew, The video made me want to go to the conference, and I don't even know what it was about! I particularly enjoyed the music, cutting shots on the beat (you can tell I'm not a video person - but you get the drift). Organising a conference seems a cool thing to do but also a massive amount of work! Once again I'm slightly in awe of what you manage to produce in the same 24 hours that I have in every day! I'm missing a trick there somewhere.
Thanks Nigel. It "helps" that I don't sleep very well (but I'm sure that will eventually catch up with me).
Very good Andrew.
UX is everything.
Amazing job.
But you do find that the 12 mm is fine for pro or semi pro work?
Absolutely. I've been very pleased with it.
It's a cine lens. This is where "color-grading" comes into play.
Pro Work requires color grading. You'd be shocked to see the body of work accomplished with the Rokinon 85mm t1.5 lens.
Link me some yt videos of examples
Damn man, that edit of the conference was sick af. 👌🏾 Subbed...
@Harry Bryson Nice!
great music choice, reminds me of that bmw commercial song, but can´t remember the name
excellent video.
I think it’s the GH5 that’s lacking in the pro department. Maybe when making that lens work for that tiny sensor they had to compromise on the image quality. Have you tried the X mount version on a Fuji?
Coming from a background of event photography, I really enjoyed the video. Shooting events, it is really helpful to understand what the client may want to use the images/footage for and you having a concept for the video ahead is a solid example of that paying off. I cringe whenever a client doesn’t have a plan for event images other than, “to use for stuff later.” 24mm & 170mm FOV are so far apart, but you made it happen. Did you find yourself in an uncomfortable position ever, wishing you had something in the middle?
No, since I had the intent to be limited to those focal lengths I felt pretty good about it. Would I do it again? Probably not. I think I am starting to see that, while I love primes for my still work, in video I prefer zoom lenses. I'm curious what you use as an event guy.
I just changed it up this year a little bit. I had been shooting 2 D800s with mostly primes. Lens wise, I was shooting the Sigma 24-35 f/2 Art (40-50% of delivered images for events and weddings tend to come off of this thing.), plus mostly the 50 Art, 85mm f/1.4D, and the lovely 180mm f/2.8D.
I've moved to 2 D500s (and still one D800 for when I can trade the pedestrian AF speed for those delicious 36mp files). My lens lineup is still in flux on the wide end as Nikon has a shortage of fast wide AF lenses for their crop sensor cameras. I added the 20mm f/1.8g (a sweetheart of a lens that I've owned in the past) and it yielded about 35-40% of my delivered images from an event last weekend, with the 85 f/1.4D pulling a solid 30%. I'd really love some of those Fuji primes on an F-mount.
So far, I really dig the D500 for the work that I do. Occasionally I miss working with the amazing D800 files, but it just does everything else so well that the bit of DR/noise/resolution difference are forgivable.
I love the d500. Wish I could afford to own one along with all my Fuji and Panasonic stuff.
I hear ya, I only want one camera system in my life if I can help it!
Wow! I loved the video. Although the transition kind of felt jarring for my own liking but you nailed what you were going for it.
Why not use your XT2 16mm 32mm
Many reasons I don't tend to shoot video on X-T2. Biggest reason is no 4k 60p.
Man, this brings back memories! I lov the edit Andrew! I hope you still need my help? :)
Thanks for your help with the videography!
The Rokinon Cine 85mm T1.5 was designed for FF, i.e. four m43 sensors' area. In this setup, it was used only with one m43 sensor. So in my layman's view, it was using only 1/4 of its potential. That's probably why it was so disappointing...
Yeah I mentioned that. But I really doubt that means the muted contrasts from the inconsistent coating are going to appear nicer on FF.
I can only speculate that perhaps you wouldn't have noticed it as much on a FF. Anyway, I enjoyed your video very much--you did a great job!
Actually, a better scenario would be to use this lens with a FF mount and a Speed Booster that would reduce the FF image circle to the m43 one. I guess the contrasts wouldn't be as muted then.
@@pavelblann343 Speed Booster produces excellent results.
Interesting
Im puzzled by your comments and findings about the 85mm cine lens. Its generally thought of as one of the best in the lineup. Your lighting conditions were not working in your favour and
It's pretty clear the difference between the two lenses in the same lighting conditions. Good conditions, bad conditions... Made no difference. The 85mm had terrible contrast and unpleasant color.
I dont think you were using it right. The 85mm produces very nice video. It may need a tweak in Resolve if you are also using mixed lighting. Not your problem now though with your simplified kit.
12mm Rok footage was in the same conditions and on the same camera body/settings and looked great. Same processing was used in Resolve on footage from both lenses, except I often increased the contrast on the 85mm (obviously, because the contrast was poor). So the difference can't be explained away with me not "using it right". And this isn't the only footage I got with it. I mean, you might be able to make the claim that my copy was bad. But I think I know how to use a lens "right".
Too much transitions, video was well planned but if u could reduce some very fast transitions/cuts ...
Lovely lenses these are 😍
Yo there! :) listen, I do agree with all you edit in video, except the colors which are flat as a school desk, but! All those people who put dislikes just don’t get it. Yo! This is made for video makers, not for your entertainment, it’s more educational, cuz CZcams gives such an opportunity tho. Press F to pay respect, guys.
The book of moooooooormon moooooooormon.
Hi Akiva. Can I help you with something?
Thanks for the review, but I have to respectively disagree with your assessment of the Rokinon 85mm. For videography, I've used Canon, Sigma and Rokinon. Rokinon is not Canon, but it competes very well. From my vantage point, it seems that you did not color grade aggressively enough. Those shot from the 85mm were clearly not probably corrected and grade. No disrespect intended, but this isn't accurate.
The point is that I didn't need to grade as aggressively with other lenses. The 85mm is WAY less contrasty than any other modern lens I've ever used. I'm not exaggerating. So yes, as long as you plan to specifically be more aggressive with any footage from that lens than other lenses (even other Rok lenses), then I'm sure it's fine.
Bought the Rokinon 12mm T2.2 MFT. After spending 24 hours with this lens on my G7. I can tell you the Rokinon Cine 12mm T2.2 is very fussy. Hard to focus. Flares are hard to control. I am using it indoors with good daylight coming into the windows are almost uncontrollable. My take is, this lens is unusable for mortals.
The blah-blah-blah ends at 3:00 mins and starts to actually talk about the lenses. But he drifts in and out. 😥😪😫
I deeply apologize for inconveniencing you.
