It's a scam when it comes to the roof. It just does not work.
If I’m using flex seal to stop a roof leak it’s because I can’t afford to call a roofing company and I assure you that the way the repair looks is the last thing on my mind
Flex seal 40 bucks roofing company 2000 scammers
agreed, Im in a similar situation myself too. I could do with something to just fix my danm roof
Edit: I got bostik flexacryl and it’s worked wonders so far
@@dysaster4521yeah buddy, patch it with the flex seal, but then get on top with some pieces and install or replace the broken and missing pieces.
For about 50$ and a hammer a man can fix a lot of roof. If you can climb up there to s pray some flex seal, you can climb up there with a 1/2 bundle on your shoulder watch some youtube and save thousands.
Exactly!
Yes, our garage roof is asbestos sheets, no way I’m messing with that.
I used flex seal on my roof and it hasn’t leaked in over 4 years. Flex seal is good in my opinion.
If I was missing a shingle, I would use the replacement method recommended by Dimitri. But I have an imperceptible leak on an almost-flat roof with skylights. I used Flex Seal around where I suspected the leak to be and it held up for four years. The leak was caused by a crappy job the contractor did; I had more leaks AFTER he finished. His attempts at repairs were both hilarious and infuriating. If I could find a good, honest contractor, I would hire him - as I’m 71 years old and not quite as nimble as I used to be. But for now Flex Seal is my go-to for a small leak.
It's obvious what they're trying to do by bashing these DIY alternatives. Job security. He's obviously an expert AND a sales person. This video convinced me to go with Flex Seal. If youre going to bash a product you gotta AT LEAST do a comparison of your way vs Flex seal and run it through a test.
Lol Flexseal works great for these exact uses not everyone wants to call a contractor for a tiny leak for insurance for a single small issue and this stuff works amazing especially if you get the color that matches your roof or clear it works amazing for small leaks which is exactly what it is designed to do. This guy doesn’t want you to use it because he wants you to call him.
Just wait till you have major leaks and your insurance just pays for flex seal repair on a discontinued shingles 😂
@@Leotheconstructionguy Insurance shouldn't be a problem . You can always find roofers who specialize in insurance fraud and overcharging .
@@jlondon158 you make no sense whatsoever
@@Leotheconstructionguy Says another overcharging scam artist.
@@jlondon158 😂😂😂 explain how I am a scam artist
If contractors want people to call them, they should lower their prices. I paid $500 for a guy to come out and put tar on my roof. The first rain it leaked. I had to get ugly to get a full refund. I went through Angie. They wanted to give me a $50 credit. I did get a refund after I went all the way off. I can put my own tar on for cost of supplies thank you. I don't trust any of them.
I'd rather use a $10 can of Flex Seal than to call a roofing company to replace a few shingles.
My mom had roof leaks in her double wide so I put 9 gallons on that roof and it is watertight 2 years and going thank you flex seal for saving us from contractors aesthetic opinions and pocket gouging 👍
9 gallons is like 1000 dollars
@@LuisRivera-xl5vn lol
My brother and I replaced a roof on a small place (probably about the size of your mom's trailer). I am guessing you could have done the entire roof yourself in asphalt shingles for maybe $1,000 more and had a roof that will go without worry for 15 years.
@@Mike-bh7shdepends on roof pitch. I wouldn’t put asphalt shingles on mine.
This isn't a good reason not to use sealant. I don't understand what roof needs to breathe means. How does blocking one shingle with sealant stop "breathing"?
Many people do this because contractors want a insane amount of money to fix the roof. My neighbor had 18 bundles of shingles to be installed cost of material 708.00 labor 3,000 that's only to cover the existing shingles no other work. INSANE!
It really works for the small stuff.
Flex seal is holding on my flashing far longer than the whatever it is the multiple roofing contractors put on there. All of their repairs have leaked. My Lowe's flex seal special hasn't yet. Knock on wood. (Roofing contractor damaged the crap out of my chimney and flashing)
Flex seal has worked great for me for small leak problems and doesn’t look bad. I’ve never needed a roof contractor. DIY.
And there are videos on utube on using flexseal with no issues for years . If it works , use it .
A friend if mine used it on his rv roof 4 years ago , still no more leaks .
I used flex seal over 2 years ago on my damaged black shingles. Can even see where I sprayed it and I have had No Leaks!!
ROOFERS WILL
SAY ITS BAD BECAUSE ITS HOW THEY MAKE SOME MONEY
Thank you!!! I’m a senior and haven’t a clue about roofing except mine leaks. Very helpful.
Why can't home owners slap on a new shingle after flex seal it? Would it work better? Hate to call a roofer for a small damage, 1, they probably don't want to come for a small job, 2. Roofer has to charge you a lot for that small patch to worth the trip.
I dunno, if it rains right now and the shingles flew off, I would be pretty happy to walk into walmart grab a can of flexseal at 9pm to save the integrity of my house.
Insurance and the roofer can figure it out after
The flex seal paste is legit as a temporary solution. Super thick and seals under water. Had some internal copper gutters on a 125-year-old house. The slate had cut a hole in it and it was draining into the house needed it plunged while raining. Flex paste worked for a good 5 days of heavy rain until we could get it fixed.
But you don't think the flex seal paste will last longterm? Are there any roofing pastes that last longterm?
@@josephmartin5483 Silicone works great long term. Make sure it's completely dry and clean.
@@joetwo7951 My situation is really difficult. There is a piece of trim that makes it impossible to get a caulk gun on to the seam. So I am looking into these roll out tapes to plug this seam. Man there's a ton of different products.
@@josephmartin5483 something weather resistant and uv rated. In my experience any tapes or sealants only last a few years at best. Kinda hard to give advice without seeing it. You should snap a few photos and find a subreddit for roofing.
@@joetwo7951 Thanks for your advice. I am looking at silicon patch right now and that might work.
I live in a mobile home with sheet metal roof. I had one puncture. I sealed puncture with good adhesive caulk and did a thick 3 step spray of flex seal. I sealed over entire roof after. It's holding 10 years and counting 😂😂😂
You sprayed flexseal over your entire metal roof?

what about flex seal paste on inside of riveted aluminum boat at the seams if not whats best ?
Ok so if you have a flat tar roof it should work just fine.
any advice on how to repair a roof if you can’t get on it?
wonder if I could spray flex seal on a worn tarp that has been on a roof for 5 months now. Just to give it a coat, it must help?
Hello,
I have a leak between my kitchen and attached sun room which was built after the house was built. The sunroom is attached to our 2 story home. We replaced the room less than 5 months ago to fix the leak. But it’s leaking again. The contractor is no longer responsive. I was going to try to buy some type of caulk or sealant to apply. But after your video, that sounds like a bad idea. Do you have any advise?
Thank you in advance.
What do you think of using the flawless proof system of granular and us rated silicone adhesive to repair hail damage, as an example
Flex seal works but its' just a temporary fix until the job is done correctly.
This guy is just killing your hope.. of course it works, Won’t look like a new roof but it gets the job done, but of course like attorneys put the fear on you so you can hire them…
Hello,
Any, ideas on what I can use, on a metal carport, on a mobile home? Rain, still gets onto, my driveway & around, my front door, area. I am, a 60 yr old lady, on a fixed income. I do, my own, repairs. Thank you, so much!
I used this stuff to sparay a few coates around my skylight in my RV because of leakage. 6 months later back to leaking. Looked on top of roof and the suns UV rays completely demolished the flex seal. Its best to use a weatherproof caulk for this application.
Flexseal is great, don't get rob by contractors
I have a steel building that is the HQ for my tree care company. 4 skylights. All leaking.
Used 3 cans of white flex seal. It withstood 40 inches of rain last winter and doing good this winter. Cost me like $50 and 1 hr of my time.
Yeah. Find a roofer contractor that will charge you thousands of dollars for fixing a small leak. Plenty of those
Sorry Dimitry but it's obvious that you are a roofer and wanting to get more clients, but the problem is you charged too damn much... If I need major work, I'll call you, but for minor patches, I'm sticking with Flex seal. Yesterday, I got up on the roof and pull up the tiles and found where the branch had cracked the deck... Anyway, some of that metal wire tape couple with flex seal is doing great (plus I put some of that new synthetic felt on it in that area over the Flex seal)... Well, Dimitri you can keep your overpriced labor.
Very good point. Call your insurance company first.
3 different roofing companies failed to find my large roof leak. Two of them refuse to return my calls and the last one took my $650. Remedy is:
Get a contract on a company letterhead detailing the work to be performed and show any guarantee. See insurance and workers comp.
It’s a miracle for basement walls too ❤This will save thousands/ Insurance claim rejection ( flex saves the day)
I think it is interesting that he says that even just simply placing a tarp for the problem later would suffice. I mean if it is for just a SHORT SHORT TIME, like long enough to schedule an appointment for the proper kind of repair job person, to get a consultation scheduled within I would say atleast 3 days of first initial need to repair.
I got a "new roof" 2.5 years ago. They were supposed to put all new decking on, then shingle. I got home from work and they had shingled over rotten wood and refused to tear it up and do what i paid for. Now i have a bad leak where my garage meets the house. Im in Wisconsin and we just got 18" of snow, it melted, now its leaking. Due to everything being more expensive now days im left with trying to find something that will stop the leaks. Im thinking of dumping a shit ton of tar on that area just to stop my current headaches. Flexseal didn't work! What's a good product to "fix" this situation? I know i need a real roofer to figure it out, but thats not in the budget right now.
Suggestions?
Last week I did 3 inspections where the insured had used flex seal.
any push back from insurance companies on those?
@@RoofingInsights3.0 I’m an adjuster and nope I don’t care. They tried to help. That’s all I care about.
Edward what should I do? I have a leak thats coming from my roof right now, in the room Im renovating. To fix it by a contractor is 1500$ my roof is 2006. I filed a claim. Should I have the guy repair it out of pocket or use some sort of temporary sealer?
If you do an inspection on a house that is being sold and there are a few patches with this what would you do for that? Like is it ok?
Get a replacement and flex seal it back blending for a better look ?? Or lace it back more work more money bottom line ?
OMG due cut it out. It is so obvious what you are doing here. You want us to call you, so we spend 8 grand on a new roof lol. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Flex seal for small leaks and repairs. Of course, you're not going to Flex seal your whole dam roof lol. I love his first reason: Its ugly" lol Wow dude that's one of your reasons. Dude 99 percent of people could care less about a small black spot on the top of the roof where nobody is going to see. So yeah let's call in a roofer to patch a small leak for about 1,000 bucks or go by a 18 dollar can of flex seal. Its a no brainer.
Why can't we slap on a new shingle after flex seal it? Would it work better? Hate to call a roofer for a small damage, 1, they probably don't want to come for a small job, 2. Roofer has to charge you a lot for that small patch to worth the trip.
roofs cost about quadruple that.
My words exactly
At 4:50 he explains exactly how to easily , properly repair it yourself for the cost of one shingle and a few nails. At home depot a package of shingles is about $50 , nails $10
makes sense. insert a shingle would be better. Flex seal...layering it...creates a perimeter slighter higher than anything outside that perimeter. so water can get trapped in little notches here and there.
Good job
So, should I use flex seal to seal up some holes in a shingle? I'm removing a mounted satellite dish. Not sure if I want to do a whole contracting job just to seal up a few screw holes in a roof. Thanks in advnance!
Use it. These opinions are obscenely biased
Replace the shingles
So it works. THe question is, for how long? Does layering 3-5 layers get you maybe an extra year, or does it last longer than the rest of the roof? Somewhere in between maybe?
How foolproof is this really? Seems simple to me... but what am I not understanding? You made a good point about back flush. I guess if you can replace the shingle, thats generally better.
Do you recomand to use fleshing cement for mi or damage?
I like how this asshole hearts comments but doesn't reply to them to help out the people who asked questions. He's probably worried about legal trouble
Thanks for this video. It's helped me with my confidence in Flex Seal. Flex Seal has worked like a charm !!!!! 💪
Love the content as always! Such good information for customers and contractors alike!
Would it be a good idea to paint primer on the wood b4 you put the under lament down ?
no you need the wood to dry and breathe or it could rot under the primer
I was so impressed with Ames liquid rubber seal and flex I gave them both 5 starts I was going to paint the whole slate roof against the advise of experts I feel they are wrong great project use clear
😂😂😂
This actually works and saves money iv used this on my pot holes concrete walkway above my porch basement seal like magic 😊
How about use Flex Seal for entire roof?
lol "well first things first you should be calling insurance company"
I bet he was first in line to get four vaccines and he's waiting for the next one eagerly
I don't know about this product because I don't live in the United States but I can categorically say that the silicone does not work as stated by this guy in the video. Silicone rubber or silicone glue does not adhere to the asphalt shingles
Two roofing contractors put what I assume is silicone on my flashing, and both times, it cracked and leaked within months.
Thank you for clarifying
Excellent video. I knew that roofs were not "water tight" but did not think about it causing problems with roof breathing. Back to Home Depot I go for shingles.
Is it flexable?
Bro I’ve had to use flex seal as a temporary solution until I could afford to have my roof repair and it held up for like 3 months and I live in Florida rain rain rain🤷🏾♂️
Glue the shingles back over flex after dry
I used flex seal last year to seal a nail hole, and now the roof is leaking again. I would definitely pay a few hundred bucks, if you can, rather than damaging my ceiling and wood truss.
Yea but what if your trying to just get through the winter and then your replacing the whole thing?
I had an expensive flat roof installed by a so called professional roofer. The edge of the flat roof leaked where it joined to a neighbpurs flat roof. Called them back and they squeezed some sort of gunk into the join. Leaked again a few weeks later. In the end I repaired it my self with a combination of sealent/adhesive and flashing strip. Don't talk to me about roofing contractors, crap!
ive got a leak in my roof into my attic - i paid a roof guy to come find the leak. $400, didnt find it. i might try and flex seal some spots on my own and see if i can pinpoint it
Just trying to get more business as a roofer
I agree! Those products is like a miracle and it does works great. You would save lots of money. At the same time, I understand why the maker of this video completely disagree with the idea. Because he’s going to lose his job or it’s not going to do any good for his constructing business. Not all people likes to spend lots of money to hire someone who can fix a leaking problem in their homes. As much as possible people love to Save money and just do a DIY themselves.
He’s kinda selling his trade, great video and he’s very thorough. The flex seal is just a great product tho, he can knock it but it’s a quick fix for the people who can’t afford roof repairs right away.
Clear biased video honestly makes me not want to call a contractor and Go with Flex Seal.
Yea, properly replacing the shingle would be best, however as a bandaid works fine. They also sell clear version now so don’t have as big an issue with color mismatch.
Flex seal doesn’t cause any problems for roof repairs
I mean who cares what your roof looks like
Notice he said ugly before not working cause it does work. Contractors hate DIY because they lose money.
This guy is just trying to sell you a new roof.😂
If you have a leak -- screw the roofer who won't be there for 45 days . screw your insurance claim that would pay for damages you could have prevented. Emergency repairs are an EMERGENCY. I say .. keep some on hand because it will happen at night or on a Holiday weekend. If some roofer is to lazy to to scrape off a little goo -- then he shouldn't be on a roof. If you're ambitious enough to make the patch, you're probably going to make later repairs yourself anyway. I don't know which is more irritating , listening to complaints in English or listening to roofers who can't speak English ( usually Spanish ).
Hell Naw!!! I went to check out a roof leak the other day,and the customer ask me if I would just spray some flex seal on the leak instead of tearing off the problem area and installing the correct flashing…….uuhhmm no sir
Nobody noticed early on that the plywood before...and plywood after the sealing is a completely different piece of plywood???? What happened to that big knot in the first shot????
First shot at 1:30
Second shot at 4:04
Looks like different plywood piece.
I say try it first if it does not work then use tear from Home Depot at the roofing supply section that has the shingles to use it and try to do it your self the video says to call a roofer but some people can’t afford to pay that when you can do it yourself and it’s better to do it your self because do you want to spend 20 bucks on a gallon or a small buck of tear or 2000 or roughly that just to fix a leak I’m not sure of the price but people tend to try to save money that the job could be small and quick to do.
How much 1 pc
Of course the contractor's going to bash flex seal. You know these are hard times for everybody. We can't afford contractor. The guy just proved that it works. You're just bashing it because you want more work lol
The guy just showed you how to ruin the roof
@@RoofingInsights3.0 the guy showed you how to temporary fix a roof, of course contractors won’t like it because it’s a cheaper *temporary* fix
Your thoughts on the following?
The 3 year video update from “Online Auto Repair Videos” said it held up, but it’s imperative to use mesh in conjunction with the flexseal for it to be effective, long-term. In the comment section, he agreed with a comment that in retrospect he would’ve used steel mesh for the project for maximum durability. He repaired the roof in 2016 did the updated video in 2019 and in the comment section as recently as two months ago replied to a comment making no indication that it has failed yet so that’s a total of seven years. Otherwise, not using mesh, (steel) flex seal alone will be prone to cracking overtime.
My roof damaged by hurricane Ian, I used FlexSeal as a temporary repair. Are you suggesting that I let my roof leak until I can get a roofing contractor for repairs, maybe a month?
That’s desperate measure. Your roof will be replaced and you need to win time. I love flex seal but it cannot be used as permanent solution
I also loss some shingles From Hurricane Ian and wondered About Flex Seal. No leaks thank God, but concerned . Don't need to get a new roof, when only need sheets of shingles for replacement
According to this video, the answer is:
"Oh very much so ... because using FlexSeal even as a temporary solution could cause even the morning dew to begin defying gravity and create a small puddle ....
It's much better to wait it out and let that leaky roof breathe in all that fresh rain , because your insulation will help soak up the excess moisture seeping into your home. And before you say "isn't that bad?" Rain, is just water, and everything needs water - and it'll actually benefit you having some moisture in your insulation as it'll help purify the air in your home by growing some vegetation in the dark, damp, warm environment in between your walls. But if you notice some black dots appearing on your walls, you should call a painter so they can touch up the paint on your walls while you're waiting on the roofers (who likely have several hurricane related repairs scheduled)"
BTW, I think you made a good judgement call on doing a quick diy patch job using flex seal until you could get a more permanent solution done. I would've done the same thing with the flex seal ... you saved tons of money by preventing the need to completely replace the roof, insulation and drywall by using the flex seal as a temporary solution (which is a better alternative to the traditional blue tarp method in my opinion)....👍
Henry 209 roof patch in a can....this is the only stuff that works and lasts...I hope this helps someone.
Flex seal is great for temporary fix. It is just a Band-Aid
I just want to temporarily use flex seal to patch 2 holes until I'm done buying all my roofing materials. I cant afford a roofer, and I can't get insurance on my house cause it has 4 layers of shingles. Right now I'm not looking for looks. I just want the leaks to stop.
I watched entire video ... and still do not understand what the main point of the video actually is. Because he certainly did not clearly explain why Flex Seal should not be used for roof repairs. The title of the video suggests there would be clear-cut evidence at to why Flex Seal should not be used for roof repairs. Seems he talked on and on about using, or rather, not using Flex Seal ... but I just did not see any examples of any actual failures from Flex Seal usage. Thus here I am left wondering why he created this video. Did he do it solely to maximize 'hits' on his video ...or what? ......Furthermore, he also talked a couple minutes about not using Flex Seal on any type of house siding, but what does house siding have to do with any so-called roofing repair video? ............. ........... Look, I had some wind damage that ripped a couple flaps off my 3-tab shingles on my unheaterd detached garage ... and all I need is a temporary 'fix' to get me through just this one mid-Michigan winter. Then in spring, I will rip off the entire roof and replace it all.
You're right
Ok, first of all, if it’s not leaking it’s repaired. Ugly or not. Any roofer that begins to talk about warranties either doesn’t know what they are talking about or knows you don’t know enough about it. The only warranty anyone should be worried about voiding really is the craftsmanship warranty. Anyone looking to do a repair like this is someone strapped for cash or someone who doesn’t care what it looks like because it’s likely a very old roof with no real warranty of any value.
Hahahahahahahhahahha
Yeeeeah great contractor spiel on you tube again …..flex seal is only supposed to be a short term fix
Nobody and even the company ever said otherwise
In fact I have had to use it on my dormers of my house after a new roof was installed …..because you guessed it ….. the CONTRACTOR messed up ….lol go figure…..two years later having a hard time getting that contractor to come back
But hey it worked and is still working after six months
Still chasing that contractor by the way and his warranted work 🤣
lesson learned : flex seal is not jesus in a can
I used flex seal on some gutters and I mean a lot of it and it lasted about 5 days and know it leaks worse than before...
A roofer that doesn't want us using sealants...makes sense.
Regardless they are still a very good temporary patch
Well when the roof has just a few years before replacing it. Why not??it's to old to lift up the shingles. So that's out. So why not. I don't have 26k too shell out right now ..
Yes
the insurance actually doesn't accept repairs done by h.o they will counted as already fix ..and won't pay damages
There’s temporary repairs meant to prevent further damage and then there’s permanent repair.
@@EdwardRatliff which one is flex seal?
