Remember if you're not replacing all the shingles where your tarp is going, don't nail through your shingles otherwise you're just creating more holes for water to get in. Nail the tarp UNDER the shingles you lift up and not in a seam. Nail a 2x4 or something similar to the bottom of the tarp to weigh it down. Temporary fix and keeps holes to fix to a minimum.
True, for sure, but not always possible. Upon removal, be sure to tar every hole made.
Yeah if you have a small area like in this video, I recommend just replacing the shingle. Especially if the rest of the roof is in good condition.
Yes I realized this the hard way and swung the other end of the tarp over the peak.
Ty
You nailed the tarp on TOP of the shingles! 😂 Duh
Here is a roofer who doesn't cheat on the terms of the job, who knows his craft, and who thinks of others. Admirable!
Thank you !
Very admirable..✔️
Roofers came out Saturday claiming they could fix a 6x8 roof with a slight leak and now it looks like Niagara falls in that hallway! I'm gonna have to climb up there myself and try this because they wouldn't listen to me Saturday. Thanks for the video, I needed this!
Roof leaked last night. was wondering how to tarp it up, low and behold your video showed up. Thanks for the step by step! saved my butt.
God Bless you for being so honest. I live in a hurricane zone and want to make sure I have this knowledge ahead of time.
What a nice and professional young man. Proud of you bro.
I love honest humble people, and you are one of them. God bless you.
Thanks! God bless you.
Eloquently stated by Doc, "In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act"
Thank you for the through and to the point of the video. Single lady doing this really helped me understand what I need to do. Thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
You are awesome! Thank you for being honest and ethical! We need more like you in the roofing biz. This is exactly why the owner of the company went into roofing. To be ethical! Thank you for this video!
Thank you. The insurance company wanted us to call a 'professional' that would have charged us a fortune -- and we don't have that kind of money. Doesn't matter if they say they are going to reimburse, the tarpers are going to want their money up front. Going to do this before it rains this weekend!
The insurance would owe for that.
Heading to my daughters house to do just this and your video made it very easy to understand. Thank you for a great explanation!
You are so welcome!
Thanks Steve! Looks like I will be doing this today.
If not replacing the entire roof, I was wondering about the new nail holes. I read the comments and noticed your comment about using a sealant. Great job!
I like how he is calling out making sure other pro's are being professional and not half azzing the job..and this simple, to the point, not to technical like other CZcams builders.
I'm glad you found this helpful!
Thanks so much for your thorough explanation. We are dealing with this now after hurricane Ian in Florida. Great job!!
Thanks bring
At home depot right now, almost bought a HUGE tarp
Saved me $50 at least 🎉
I was watching this video very speculatively. Until at the end when he made it clear that this was a band-aid. As a roofer I was saying to myself "that won't stop the leak for very long, just temporarily." Once this guy also said as much I was impressed with the informative video, thank you.
Thank you !
You're an honest man. Thanks for the tip!
Simple to the point not too much blah blah 👍
That's how we operate!
Thank you! Caring respectful and no bs. Appreciated ❤
You are so welcome
Thank you for sharing such an informative video. The step by step is so easy to understand what you are doing. The extra tips and great 😃

Very helpful. I also really liked that one of your concerns was trying to do this without ripping of homeownwer and ins company
Thank you! I’m about to do this and you made it very simple!
Glad it helped!
I love your video. Very informative and you took the time to demonstrate how to do the job. What if the damage is near the gutter area? How would you tarp that area? Thank you
awesome advice . thank you brother
Thank you for this! Will be working on this tomorrow.
You got this!
Thank you very much for this! I desperately needed this instruction.

Good video, keep it up
Thanks, will do!
@@hailorhighwaterroofing just joking bro. Your video came in handy definitely for homeowners going thru hard times and not having roof knowledge. Great job on the video again
Same
I’m right down the road and about to have to do this at home. We are in Watkinsville and the insurance company said it was our responsibility to get the tarp installed
Thank you so much for that video. I was going to just lay the tarp and hammer it on the leaky roof and not put it under the shingles. That was very helpful.
Super informative, thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
I like it. Good information, bro. I'm doing that job tomorrow.
Great video very professional!!
Professionalism is something we strive for! Thank you.
Thank you so much for the video. What size of cap nails shell I get? Thank you

You guys don't happen to be down here working are ya?
If Wind or High Water Roofing isn't over there (by all means use them, they seem like the type to not rip off the insurance or homeowner) Infinity Roofing is in that area.
Glad it helped
Thank you for the excellent repair advice, very enjoyable, May the Lord bless and care for you and your family.
Your very welcome, glad to help!
Thank you this video answered all my question
About to go tarp a Friends house in North Port FL who were rejected by Fema after Hurricane Ian, thank you for posting this great video! #FloridaStrong
Good luck!
GREAT INFO. Q - If you are not replacing the entire roof, and just repairing and are waiting on roof shingles, will the nails hurt the roof? THANKS
Thank you as well...informative!!
Thanks for the helpful vid, how long are the cap nails? Is 1.5in the sweet spot?
Thank you very much for your videos, I have a question. How do you cover the holes in those nails when it's time to remove them?
Best video yet on the subject thanks very much. Which it was the first one i watched
Glad it was helpful!

You are a wise young man.... I am gonna go save my tenant now! Thank you bud!
Your welcome!
Good basic guidance !
What about tarping on a tar and gravel roof.
We have a flat section of our roof that has to be replaced in the spring, but not possible for now.
Can it be tarped similarly or does it have to be that seal they suggest? Leak is small but want to prevent further damage or moisture incoming.
Thank you so much for this information.
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this
Thanks, patching up my roof after hurricane Ian here in Florida.
Good luck!
Good stuff ! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool video. Helps me out a lot.
Glad to hear it!
Appears to work well on newer roofs where shingles remain pliable. Otherwise, overlay the tarp using one by twos to extend the tarp over the damaged surface. The reason that some roofers overlay from the ridge is that the repair should extend the full length of the ridge.
Great insight!
Great video, thanks for the info. Wasn't sure how to secure the tarp correctly.
Glad it helped!
great info thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Your awesome. And very right.

Glad I could help!
Hey man, I have to re-shingle one side of the home due to west wind. Currently have a 20x40 tarp on the roof thats been good for the past 2 months. Since it's May now, rainy season is slowly going away. My question is, can you remove the shingles little at a time due to a sunny day one day and rainy the next?
Do those nails that you are putting in to hold it down on the sides cause leaks?
Thanks, I never had to tarp but now, I have an idea.
Glad to help
thanks for sharing man
No problem 👍
U did great ! I just had a neighbors tree smashed on my roof of my gurage. Thanks for the tip.
Thoughts on using synthetic felt? I find it’s safer to walk over if you’re covering a larger area and cheaper
Synthetic felt is great for full roof installs for sure!
I once worked for a roofer who would use roofing felt for the same purpose, a temporary seal until the roof could be repaired or replaced. Is that no longer done?
Good video! I just did this to prepare an area of my roof for an upcoming storm, but I used roofing nails instead of cap nails. When I remove the nails and the tarp, is there any way to be sure it won't leak where I nailed it? Thanks for the help!
Hey Paul! We suggest that you caulk is back down with roofing sealant. Thanks for the comment!
@@hailorhighwaterroofing Thanks so much for the reply, that's exactly what I'm going to do!
Great video, do you add tarp before or after adjusters comes. If you working with insurance?
Thanks. Just had to havey 20yr old son do this to ours. Top of a tree came down amd went through it.
Time saver putting tarp under shingles genius💡
absolutely !
What keeps water from leaking in around the left and right edges of the tarp?
I had some guy come out to tarp my roof and there were just 3 areas that needed it and he tarped the whole damn thing. Now I'm going to be faced with nail holes in perfectly good areas not to mention possibly damaged shingles the way he was hitting them. (Used those plastic capped nails). My question is -- when the tarp and those nails are removed, will the holes reseal themselves in time? -- thanks for any help
wow. i literally had to carry my tarp over to the other side to prevent water from seeping in. Did not know i could do this lol.
Thanks.
Thank you
You're welcome
Overall you did a pretty good job but if there’s a heavy continuous down pour this is not water proof. One mistake you made is where you installed the tarp under the shingles where those two shingles meet in the middle you did not put the tarp all the way up under that next shingle up. So where those two shingles meet there’s a hole above that tarp. Other than that good explanation and trying to do what’s best for the client.
Great
Glad to help!
Can I use a heavy duty staple gun. I’m afraid of making holes with nails
How do I stop leaks on flat roof, until fix it or replace the roof.
Isn't driving nails into the roof like that a bad thing? How do you deal with the nail holes after the tarp is removed?
Well this roof was replaced soon after the tarp was installed. However, if you need to seal up nail holes I suggest using JTS-1 MULE HIDE sealant.
Can I use a clear shower curtain instead of a tarp?
