Why Paige Bueckers shouldn’t have won Player of the Year

  • As great as Paige Bueckers was her freshman year, she shouldn't have won Naismith national player of the year. That honor should've went to Aari McDonald. Her run at Arizona was historic and what Caitlin Clark did for Iowa in 2023 is the only true comparison.

    Great arguments. You addressed all of UConn fans likely comebacks like mentioning their strong non-conference schedule. It's true defenses can't just account for Paige when they play UConn, they have to worry about Edwards. But they can just zone in on Aari. Clark is similar to a certain extent.

    Caitlin Clark made Monica Czinano (their head coach even stated she didn’t ever think Czinano would be a starter) Until Clark; that’s how massively impactful she is. Clark DID solely carry Iowa on her back

    I don't usually agree with you lol but I'm not gonna lie, you made a lot of valid points on this... the NCAAW does make a lot of suspicious decisions, the recent one for me was Angel Reese winning the MOP award over her teammate Alexis Morris... while both Angel and Alexis carried LSU the entire season, I think Alexis Morris was the best player on that team during the tournament, she was the most consistent and clutch than anybody on LSU but the NCAAW had tunnel vision on Angel Reese instead.

    • @politicallil7060
      @politicallil7060 Před 9 měsíci

      I agree on that one, and Angel said it herself, Alexis should have been the MOP. I think they gave it to Angel because she wasn't in consideration for the player of the year, which was some absolute nonsense given the winner doesn't bother to play both ends of the floor, and with all of Catlin's spectacular shooting, she only averaged four more points a game than Reese which amounts to two buckets when she had her hands on the ball 99% of the time, and Reese had to go get the ball off the boards basically to score. It's just the way society is and it's NEVER going to be a level playing field so why even bother, they not going to change their mind any more than these players can change their color.

    I AGREE WITH YOU 100%, I've been saying this for YEARS. It's like comparing apples to oranges. TRUE lovers of the game, took note of Aari's stats vs UConn when Arizona easily beat them by 10 in the 2021 Final Four. Just because it's UConn players, they get special media attention and rankings. ESPN does not care that UConn is in the Big Easy where UConn just runs up player and team stats. PB got "cooked" by Destanni Henderson in 2022 as well, and Henny was even just a bit taller than. Aari. Aari is playing just absolutely great for the WNBA's Dream in Atlanta. I'm so very proud of her and Henny. The small point guards that took down the Media Giant.

    Dude, I loved your stuff but you're all over the place. I think you're reaching too far here just to b controversial. If the NPOY was based o numbers alone, it's still a 2-horse race with Paige and Caitlyn. Aari was awesome that year but she wasn't putting up Caitlyn Clark numbers, which means she was leading her team, not carrying it. That said, it's easy to lead a team with average players (See how she's doing in the W). At UConn a freshman led a team full of future pros and it wasn't even close. And anyone who watched UConn knows Bueckers held back so much that season that Geno was constantly on her back. She didn't want to show up her seniors, but obviously she's too good to just fit in. It's pretty ridiculous to come 3 years later and say Paige stole something everyone in the world knows she earned just to get views. smh
    If you really believe what you're saying, it would make sense to find out what different bodies use for criteria for their annual awards. Also, it's easy for you to sit at home and say the game is rigged with no proof. Your biggest mistake is implying that the NCAA had anything to do with any of these awards. There is no NCAA player of the year award. There are several awards but the NCAA only does the Most Outstanding Player awards in the tournament. Reach out to AP or the one of the other organizations to get some insight instead of just looking at a stat sheet. The worst thing about it is your flawed logic. If what you say is true and Paige was only that good because of who she's surrounded by, then Aari should be better in the W than she was in college, right? That argument doesn't wash. Aari was a great college player but Paige Bueckers had the better season.

  • @matthewreese3907
    @matthewreese3907 Před 10 měsíci +4

    Not sure where I stand on this. I feel like Paige deserved the awards because she was consistently good all season. Not only that but she really stood out for being so dominant while be so young. I agree with the harder competition that Aari had and I think that might be the reason. Arizona wasn’t the best in their conference so it was harder for them to get good wins. Overall I still think Paige deserved it but this really helped me see how underrated Aari was

    I enjoyed this video and absolutely agree that Aari should have been in the running and rated over others considered. I do not rate her over Paige however. First, as for their teammates: Aari did not have the caliber of teammates that Paige did, agreed. But didn't that make it easier for her to shine? Paige was, you say, surrounded by WNBA caliber talent. That may be true and, if so, isn't it all the more impressive that she outshone all of these great players. When this issue was first raised a couple of years ago, another CZcams reactor compared her to others who he thought should have been considered more highly. Those players were Aaliyah Boston, Caitlyn Clark Zia Cooke, Cameron Brink, and Rhyne Howard. He felt, like you do, that some of Paige's success was due to the media, with him it was her social media presence.
    So I did a statistical analysis for the 2020-21 season and here's what I cane up with. Paige played the most minutes at 36.2. She was 3rd in PPG with 20, behind Caitlyn with 26.6 and Rhyne with 20.7. She was 5th in RPG with 4.9 (not bad for a 5'11" guard), 5th in BPG (see previous), 2nd in SPG and tied for 3rd for most TO's (2.5). Here's where she shone: 2nd in FG% at 52.4% behind only Cameron, 1st in 3pt. % at 46%, 1st in FT% with 86.9%! Oh, and she had the least fouls PG with 1.2.
    To summarize: She was one of only three freshman on the list; Aaliyah and Zia were sophomores and Rhyne a junior. Although Caitlyn had the most PPG, Paige had a better FG%, 3pt%, and FT%. She had a better 3pt.% than the most amazing 3pt. shooter in women's NCCA basketball. Of the three guards she was behind only Caitlyn RPG. She was 2nd only behind Caitlyn in APG with some of the prettiest passes you'll ever see. She and Cameron were the only players on the list with a FG% over 50%. Her FT% was 9 &1/2 % higher than the next closest who shot 77.2% . Two of the categories RPG and BPG were, as you would expect, by the three bigs.
    This is a girl who came off the bench as an 8th grader for the varsity and made seven 3pt. shots. Who does that?! Yes, I'm a Paige fan. I've seen a lot of ball in my 67 years including seeing 3 all-time greats live - Dr. J. (my all-time favorite), Doug Collins, and George McGinnis. This girl is truly special. Thanks again and sorry for being long-winded. And even though I disagreed about who should've won the accolade, I still subscribed because I thought you were very fair in your reasoning. Keep up the good work, my friend.

    I agree with alot of the things you said about the media. But comparing Paige to Aari is like comparing a Ferrari to a Tesla. Paige is at a complete different level. The only reason Paige didn't score 35 per game is because she's a pass first type of player. The team Paige carried wasn't stacked either. Aari plays a few minutes a game on average for Atlanta as well whereas Paige will be one of the best players in the league, the moment she steps on the court. Paige plays like a guy more than any female I've ever seen. I have season tickets for the Sparks and I've seen Aari play a few times in person. Rhyne Howard is a beast. I know ur talking about college from Arizonas championship year but your comparing a journeyman type of player to someone who has the chance to elevate the women's game to unprecedented heights along with Caitlin Clark.

    Ah, when it comes to an institution with the power of selection and the media, it will always be a white female who will get the ultimate crown. It doesn't matter if they don't have the best stats or play on a championship team; they represent the institution's power and who they want to shine, and that's the politics of sports. Paige Bueckers, just like Catlin Clark, got roped up and outplayed by undersized guards who led and won the college championship. Neither Destiny (SC) or Alexis (LSU) was not even given honorable mentions for an all-American team after outplaying them in a championship game. That's how the system works: AA athletes and other ethnic groups' contributions to the game are constantly minimized, just like in every aspect of this society. As long as these women's groups are at the bottom of the power structure, there's nothing anyone can do. The NCAA is like every other institution in this nation; they pick the winners and losers the way they see fit, no matter the contribution of other groups. I don't believe a person who plays one end of the court like Clark should have won college player of the year, but you don't have much to say when you don't have the power to pick the winners and losers. These other stars have to wait until they go to the next platform to be recognized for their contributions to the game, but that's not going to happen at the college level, where they have to make room for their own. JMO, but the video was on point. It's politics and power, and unfortunately for players like Aari McDonald, they have none, so they are not going to be treated justly.

Paige tried to defend and create fouls and got bumped all over the court. One of those such attempts got her hard to the floor and she was charged with the foul. She's her bodies own worst enemy.
      Aari is playing for The Dream and they are currently in contention for the WNBA playoffs. I don't think PB could ever withstand the WNBA, there are WNBA players like the Sun's Alyssa Thomas who would wipe PB off the court in a couple of plays.

      Paige played a 3x3 tourney with Jackie Young and Napheesa Collier when she was still in high school and Pheesa and Jackie were both already pros. Guess who the best player on the team was? She's also added 15 lbs of muscle to her frame since then as well.

      I guarantee you if Paige entered the WNBA after her freshman season with Aari she would of been chosen way higher than Aari.
