"Debacle, catastrophe?". I'd say criminal. There's been enough documentation of the severity of this virus for this kind of lapse to be overlooked. How can any medical and\or govt official sign off on letting these people onto public transportation? This is madness.
I theorize that the governments around the world have concluded that a full-out pandemic is 100% assured at this point, and that it simply no longer matters at all if a bunch of passengers are sent home to their 50 countries, regardless of whether they are infected or not. What they are doing at this point is trying to keep us lowly peasants as ignorant and therefor as calm as possible for as long as possible to quietly prepare damage control measures.

The toilets on the diamond princess have a positive air pressure in them. Air would come out of the toilet when flushing. I noticed this the last time i was aboard the ship. The captain warned passengers not to put anything into the toilet that could cause a blockage because it would block the whole system, not just your own cabin. That tells me its the same as the hong kong shared sewer systems. It probably got in the ventilation systems on board the ship too.
Cruise ships generally use vacuum systems like airplanes, not sure how you would get air coming out towards you when flushing. The toilet warning is on all ships with vacuum systems and is not specific to the Diamond Princess.

I watched a documentary about this once. Apparently, millions of tiny particles are blasted into the air and the bathroom when you flush the toilet or when you pee, etc. Normally this is not a big problem but I wouldn't be using any other toilet but my own from now on.

I live in Wisconsin, USA. I actually bought a supply of charcoal filter face masks today. Didn't know if I would start making 'just in case' kinds of purchases but I found out that my employer ordered almost 1,000 face masks last week for office and warehouse staff. That got my attention. I have already been doing minor stockpiling of food stuff, household supplies and pet supplies.
Holy moly! If the Chinese feel embarrassed about this whole virus-thingy, they only have to look to their Japanese neighbours to feel competent. How hard can it be to evacuate a ship, quarantaine the passengers (eventually by sending them to their homelands) and surveil them rigorously? I mean, YOU HAD ONE JOB!
Sounds like a very bureaucratic response to a problem honestly: avoid responsibility, ignore all evidence that counters your original position, ignore all warnings as situation deteriorates, step back when actual experts are forced to take over because the situation is now an unavoidable disaster and existential threat.
They offered treatment at their hospitals for those who were infected, and for those who were not infected, they offered to house them with Japanese families until their own countries could repatriate them. Some people took advantage of the offer, and some preferred not to for various reasons.
What the Japanese should have done is call up the 50 countries' health officials and tell them to send planes to Yokohama to repatriate their citizens, infected or otherwise, before the cruise ship docks at the harbor! Heck, I would even foot their evacuation bills if i were the Japanese gov. A majority of the people on the ship are not Japanese nationals. Japan doesn't have to be responsible for other countries' citizens. Just ask the relevant governments to organize the evacuation and i'll pay the bill. Crisis management at the minimal cost.
Being honest, I don't like the idea that the WHO's director has watched Dr. Campbell's videos. I hope that our Dr. is not being forced to change the information.
WHO director should have been advising the Japanese, "no, no, no, they have to be quarantined and isolated in Japan", but he stayed up late, binge watching Dr. John hand washing videos. Its such a cluster f, it must be intentional. Maybe as an island nation, Japan was going to escape the pandemic and this was an intentional "slip up" to help get the party started, so to speak.
Same with US we definitely have more cases and havent had CDC add a single case here in US since valentines day. they are lyingand concealing the true numbers. like 200 being monitored in Georgia,700+ in washington state, 5400 being monitored in California. Not even counting the thousand or more we now have in quarantine centers from evacuees straight from the epicenter of china and still no new cases? The cruise ship had zero infection control standards, we saw they had masks and gloves, but what instruction re use of masks who knows. This new quarantine is a different situation. I hope all these individuals remain virus free . There is a long term care facility half a block away. I do find it odd that Vancouver has so few cases reported. Time will tell. The calm manner Dr Campbell deliver the facts, and the rationale behind the self protective measures should help to alleviate the understandable fear of the Covid-19 for the average person. The recommended isolation practices would not only help oneself but also the whole .neighborhood.
That's not something to be proud of. I won't be looking at this channel the same way now. I don't trust the WHO, now I'm not really sure I can trust this channel either. How is that a good thing?
Well I see it differently. Not as much as recognition as a way to say “We know what you are doing and we are watching you”. But I doubt Dr Campbell will ever change the way he presents the information. He was always honest and always clear about his opinions and always voiced them very respectfully.

We in Aussieland has isolated our rescued people in out-door huts (Cains QLD) so the air is not circulated, families are housed together and each group can self isolate. same with our Christmas Island facility.The bad thing is is that we are not testing in our cities, I live in Melbourne in the Chinese student community which is one of the largest Chinese communities outside of China in the world and we have no information on how to access testing or any health care. The biggest down play of the virus status in the world, I'm pretty much disgusted on the lack of action and information here.
One of our family's close friend, is now currently at the frontline in a hospital in Wuhan. He would occasionally called my father when he got the chance to have a rest in a designated hotel. He said that the death number indeed bypassed the official figure, because many heavily infected people (those with other diseases）developed too quickly, and before the medics had the chance to diagnose them with the tool kit, they died from it. Since these people haven't been tested, the death was not included in the official number. Also there were now currently few people with the symptoms quarantined at home now, except for people who wanted to hide it because of being afraid of not taking care of at the hospital. But according to this family friend, now with more quickly--built "hospitals" and so many aid from all parts of China and the world, everyone in the hospital had a bed, not like before when there were so many patients with lack of helping hands. Now the Wuhan officials ordered that if one more symtomatic case discovered at home, the relevant officials will be facing take consequences immediately. My thoughts are also with the people on that ship, it's horrendous and desperate. As far as I now, knowing that Japan is short of tool kit, we have already sent packages to them urgently. Hope people on that ship as well as around the world suffering from this can get recovered soon.

I'm surprised by such few cases in US, and o information for those without insurance to get tested, if needed, without worries financially. That moment at the end was scary. The fact that the Director of WHO sent him a compliment is not comforting! I agree that he is producing some of the best, most fact based, dispassionate assessments of this pandemic. He is not reassuring everyone that it’s going to be easy, and it seems he is quite alarmed at “unknown unknowns” about reinfection and overwhelming the health care system without worldwide quarantine.

Dr. John Campbell. How much oxygen should your hospital stock up on? I would recommend getting enough for 15% of the total population of the area your hospital services, or as close to that number as you can convince the hospital administration to let you order. Worst case scenario everybody catches it, 15% need oxygen, you would have enough. The amount needed will probably be less, but neighboring hospitals could have shortages and need to borrow some. If hardly any is needed, oxygen doesn't go bad. Use it later. Also order it soon before every hospital on earth is ordering it. You don't want the oxygen on back-order for weeks. An alternative would be to purchase an industrial strength oxygen generator. Then you can make more, or make less, depending on the need, either way it will benefit the hospital in the long run.

Hi John, I'm in hk. The transfer between floors via the toilet system is difficult to understand, but in tall buildings there is a kind of back draft and the virus actually travels UP the building, not just down. The common issue is dry U-bends, particularly on floor drains, which dry out. Once the U-bend is dry the pipe is open to the system. A bathroom extraction fan also creates a small -ve pressure which increases the draft up the pipe. Closing the toilet lid when flushing helps as during flushing the toilet can also suck air draft back up the system.

Shared plumbing on cruise ships might explain why norovirus spreads so readily there. Good point.

Nope. You can't be diagnosed outside the hospital and deaths without a diagnosis are just cremated and not recorded as Covid-19.
No they dont even count positive test results on people that are asymptomatic in confirmed cases

Most toilets have a bit of a gap between the seat and the lid. I suspect this is enough to spread the disease quite a bit.
I watched a documentary about this once. Apparently, millions of tiny particles are blasted into the air and the bathroom when you flush the toilet or when you pee, etc. Normally this is not a big problem but I wouldn't be using any other toilet but my own from now on.
Tape up the toilet and take a dump on the front lawn I guess

I live in Wisconsin, USA. I actually bought a supply of charcoal filter face masks today. Didn't know if I would start making 'just in case' kinds of purchases but I found out that my employer ordered almost 1,000 face masks last week for office and warehouse staff. That got my attention. I have already been doing minor stockpiling of food stuff, household supplies and pet supplies.

Holy moly! If the Chinese feel embarrassed about this whole virus-thingy, they only have to look to their Japanese neighbours to feel competent. How hard can it be to evacuate a ship, quarantaine the passengers (eventually by sending them to their homelands) and surveil them rigorously? I mean, YOU HAD ONE JOB!

Sounds like a very bureaucratic response to a problem honestly: avoid responsibility, ignore all evidence that counters your original position, ignore all warnings as situation deteriorates, step back when actual experts are forced to take over because the situation is now an unavoidable disaster and existential threat.

They offered treatment at their hospitals for those who were infected, and for those who were not infected, they offered to house them with Japanese families until their own countries could repatriate them. Some people took advantage of the offer, and some preferred not to for various reasons.
What the Japanese should have done is call up the 50 countries' health officials and tell them to send planes to Yokohama to repatriate their citizens, infected or otherwise, before the cruise ship docks at the harbor! Heck, I would even foot their evacuation bills if i were the Japanese gov. A majority of the people on the ship are not Japanese nationals. Japan doesn't have to be responsible for other countries' citizens. Just ask the relevant governments to organize the evacuation and i'll pay the bill. Crisis management at the minimal cost.

Being honest, I don't like the idea that the WHO's director has watched Dr. Campbell's videos. I hope that our Dr. is not being forced to change the information.
Something was very different about the good Doctor on this one !
WHO director should have been advising the Japanese, "no, no, no, they have to be quarantined and isolated in Japan", but he stayed up late, binge watching Dr. John hand washing videos.
Its such a cluster f, it must be intentional. Maybe as an island nation, Japan was going to escape the pandemic and this was an intentional "slip up" to help get the party started, so to speak.
Canada also is extremely 'relaxed' about how it's handling cases and quarantines.

Same with US we definitely have more cases and havent had CDC add a single case here in US since valentines day. they are lyingand concealing the true numbers. like 200 being monitored in Georgia,700+ in washington state, 5400 being monitored in California. Not even counting the thousand or more we now have in quarantine centers from evacuees straight from the epicenter of china and still no new cases? Add in that we are taking in flights daily from china and countries all over the world who now have their own clusters of cases that they cant link back to china (which means sustained local transmission). it really is unbelievable the lengths they are going to in order to conceal this virus, US cases and its true nature from the public and world at large
Ocanada Standinguard I agree. The quarantine of 200 plus individuals from the cruise ship in a convention centre in Cornwall should be telling . I don’t think it’s a formal quarantine station. The cruise ship had zero infection control standards, we saw they had masks and gloves, but what instruction re use of masks who knows. This new quarantine is a different situation. I hope all these individuals remain virus free . There is a long term care facility half a block away. I do find it odd that Vancouver has so few cases reported. Time will tell. Looks like theses folks will be under strict control. No isolation just quarantine I understand, so that must mean no infected cases??? We in Aussieland has isolated our rescued people in out-door huts (Cains QLD) so the air is not circulated, families are housed together and each group can self isolate. same with our Christmas Island facility.The bad thing is is that we are not testing in our cities, I live in Melbourne in the Chinese student community which is one of the largest Chinese communities outside of China in the world and we have no information on how to access testing or any health care. The biggest down play of the virus status in the world, I'm pretty much disgusted on the lack of action and information here.

One of our family's close friend, is now currently at the frontline in a hospital in Wuhan. He would occasionally called my father when he got the chance to have a rest in a designated hotel. He said that the death number indeed bypassed the official figure, because many heavily infected people (those with other diseases）developed too quickly, and before the medics had the chance to diagnose them with the tool kit, they died from it. Since these people haven't been tested, the death was not included in the official number. Also there were now currently few people with the symptoms quarantined at home now, except for people who wanted to hide it because of being afraid of not taking care of at the hospital. But according to this family friend, now with more quickly--built "hospitals" and so many aid from all parts of China and the world, everyone in the hospital had a bed, not like before when there were so many patients with lack of helping hands. Now the Wuhan officials ordered that if one more symtomatic case discovered at home, the relevant officials will be facing take consequences immediately. My thoughts are also with the people on that ship, it's horrendous and desperate. As far as I now, knowing that Japan is short of tool kit, we have already sent packages to them urgently. Hope people on that ship as well as around the world suffering from this can get recovered soon.
Thanks for sharing, btw what's the current Case fatality rate your family friend estimate to be? If we goes by official statistic, it's about 5-6% in Wuhan. Since there are under reporting of death, can he give a rough estimation of the actual value?

@@Verpal he cannot say for sure to what degree it was underplayed as what he experienced was about 15 days ago when the virus was at its peak he was in the diagnosing team (now he is in expert team which kind of like giving instructions?), so he only said the death number should be higher...We can only judge by his tone that the death toll will not be way higher than the current one...

I am not sure what do you mean, expense incurred during quarantine is paid by the federal government, or are you suggesting some form of compensation for lost income? I don't think there are any nation compensating their citizen for quarantine yet.

So many in the US will not go to a doctor for mild symptoms because they don't have health insurance, or high deductible.
After all, 80+% will be mild and won't know, and if they have to pay to see a doctor? Most won't do it.

@@nywaterny I couldn't go to my doctor because I lost my insurance. Its over $200.00 just for the office visit , and then the medicine could be anywhere from $4.00 too several hundred. I am lucky though, my mother payed cash for my visit, and the prescription was only $150.00 this time for the tamaflu. Sad part is , I knew I had the flu, but couldn't just go get meds without seeing the doctor. America has a horrible health care system designed to profit from illnesses istead of caring for patients. It's criminal.

He is not reassuring everyone that it’s going to be easy, and it seems he is quite alarmed at “unknown unknowns” about reinfection and overwhelming the health care system without worldwide quarantine.

Dr. John Campbell. How much oxygen should your hospital stock up on? I would recommend getting enough for 15% of the total population of the area your hospital services, or as close to that number as you can convince the hospital administration to let you order. Worst case scenario everybody catches it, 15% need oxygen, you would have enough. The amount needed will probably be less, but neighboring hospitals could have shortages and need to borrow some. If hardly any is needed, oxygen doesn't go bad. Use it later.
Also order it soon before every hospital on earth is ordering it. You don't want the oxygen on back-order for weeks. An alternative would be to purchase an industrial strength oxygen generator. Then you can make more, or make less, depending on the need, either way it will benefit the hospital in the long run.

Hi John, I'm in hk. The transfer between floors via the toilet system is difficult to understand, but in tall buildings there is a kind of back draft and the virus actually travels UP the building, not just down. The common issue is dry U-bends, particularly on floor drains, which dry out. Once the U-bend is dry the pipe is open to the system. A bathroom extraction fan also creates a small -ve pressure which increases the draft up the pipe. Closing the toilet lid when flushing helps as during flushing the toilet can also suck air draft back up the system.
First the WHO next a BBC 4 series!! But seriously, acknowledgement from the world health organisation is quite something, and deserved!
