  • Joe Grossman was a writer for Late Show with David Letterman from 2004 until the show went off the air in 2015. He also appeared on the show 112 times in various capacities, usually as himself with a deadpan disposition that would more often than not exasperate Dave. Where did Joe come from? How did he end up writing for David Letterman & Co, and how did he end up on camera so many times? Did he always want to perform? Joe, who happens to be one of Mike's all time favorite on-screen talents for Late Show opens up and answers all those questions and more in this hilarious episode of The Letterman Podcast. He also reveals the great new job he just got.

Great channel and fantastic interview. Joe's character was always one of my favorites when I watched the show growing up in the Netherlands. Glad to hear that he is still doing well for himself nowadays. Thanks to all involved for this video!

Many, many thanks! This show is a labor of love, and created for folks like you. Plus, it keeps Mike busy from bothering people.

So weird that Joe was today's guest, I have been watching his old clips a lot lately and trying to find out what he is up to now professionaly. Awesome stuff

I loved the line about being a "comedy coward." He said that he could slip jokes under the door and wait for them to detonate. Some thrive at improv, some love stand up, and some do better behind-the-scenes, writing for others.

And its ironic; clearly he's not just 'anonymously funny,' as he proved over and over in this episode.

Joe is hilarious! This is the first time I ever saw him laugh or even smile because he was always in character on Letterman. I remember the DeNiro/Hoffman show and Alan's Celebrity Interview. I could swear I remember Joe's great line being in the show... "If I wanted to watch a senior citizen jack-off Dustin Hoffman, I'd watch The Graduate"! 🤣 Looking forward to part 2 and RIP Alan Kalter! 😪

Joe IS hilarious. One of our host’s personal favorite people, we are extremely happy we can say Joe is a friend of the show. Also, Herbie Hancock recently turned 83, so his internal chemistry is probably creating something very special.

I always felt the same when you'd see someone working on the show the same age as me, especially when one would make it on the show in a gag. It must be like growing up a huge fan of The Rolling Stones and then getting to jam with them onstage.

haha If you're at Hello Deli in NYC get the Letterman, it's Turkey, Ham, Cheese, Sweet Peppers, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, Oil & Vinegar on a Hero.

Its because Dave is a Ham and a big ol turkey at the same time. He's cheesy, sweet and spicy as well. As for the rest, we got nuthin.

I always felt about Joe’s appearances the way you say you did. With him working in Fallon’s joke mine, does that mean the Tonight Show has raised its intended demo to something older than 4-7 years old? Guess I’ll need to watch some of them to find out. Looking forward to part 2.

@@thelettermanpodcast How about Pat? Barbara Gaines? and while not a member of the staff (as someone who is younger, in my 30s, so watch Letterman in the later years starting in the early 00s), Grinder Girl and hula hoop girl from Will It Float. Would love to know what the later too are up to now.
