Such a great character and a great performer. He was so smooth and original with his delivery I always wondered if it was scripted or improv’ed. The fact that Dave seems to be surprised and amused by all Lyle says makes me think it’s not overly scripted. But damn that’s some funny stuff. Lyle never breaks or stumbles. That actor totally owns this character.

    • @JiveDadson

The real Lyle said it was scripted, but David would occasionally go off-script and force him to react impromptu.

Two of Lyle’s quips that were underappreciated: “Just scored with the costume lady; Lyle needs to take a little breather.” (Late Show fans know the great Sue Hum)…And “Ya got the body of a Greek god - like Fran Tarkenton in his heyday…” That’s gold.

The interesting thing about the 2/17/09 segment is that in at least two markets (Chattanooga, TN and Watertown, NY), the CBS affiliates decided to go ahead with their digital transitions despite the date being pushed to June. So the last thing broadcast on those stations was Lyle telling Dave 'I know where you live Bee-Yotch!' before the plugs were pulled.

    • @fredmossberg2069

Tres, I did a deep dive a couple of years ago. Some great interview footage with Jimmi Simpson. The Stangel brothers, who had created the role, were walking back from lunch and noticed a large poster outside a theater for the Aaron Sorkin production of a play called "The Farnsworth Invention" starring Hank Azaria as David Sarnoff and Jimmi Simpson as Philo Farnsworth. One of them says to the other, "That's Lyle! That's our guy." He explained that it was Liam McPoyle from "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia". The other Stangel said, "You're right! Wow. We need to call his agent." So, according to the dates the play ran, Lyle's 1st three appearances were during the end of the play's run. After that, Simpson was flown back from L.A. for the remaining dozen appearances. Dave would ask, "Where's Lyle? Let's get that guy Lyle back on the show." He never referred to him by his real name, and Simpson never had a conversation with him off the air. Just incredible chemistry. I think it's some of Letterman's greatest work, honestly LOL...Simpson is obviously a classically trained actor of the first order and part of it is his comfort and skill level in improv.

Lyle called Dave “shine box”, while Johnny Dark had his first encounters with show business while shining shoes outside nightclubs. Both show only thinly disguised contempt for Dave. A guy that looks like Lyle appears in a show called Dark Matter. Coincidences? Genetic connection? I’m just sayin’.
