    Ive seen people in my life totally destroy themselves in the name of "happiness" when in reality, they were just following what the TV told them would make them happy. The beach vacation, the expensive wedding, the overpriced house, the overpriced car. When really all they needed was to be confident in themselves and in what they do in life.

      They become comedians because they're too sane to have any other choice. You can't see reality for what it really is without some way to purge the darkness. The best comedians were on the darkest ride.
      This is why most of the best comedians die before their natural end. They self medicate the pain and don't escape before it goes too far. Bill Hicks remains my favorite comedian of all time. He knew too much. Was heavy into drugs of all kinds. Ended up getting cancer and dying very young.
      The world of comedy hasn't been as bright for me since then. His themes and his perception resonated with me more than any who have come before or after. He raged at the "fevered egos" destroying all that's good. In this time, perhaps he'd have honed his craft to god tier and these wokesters wouldn't stand a chance. More likely he'd have busted a blood vessel in his brain ranting like a madman at some heckler like Chicago '89: calling her a c**t and demanding "I want you to go find a fuckin' soul!"
      I miss that mad ranting Texan. He shone 3 times as bright as most and lasted only a third as long. The band Tool peppered their songs with references to his bits. "Arizona Bay" was when Bill talked about that glorious day when the Earth shat CA into the Pacific like a greasy steamer of egos and silicone. Aenma was a song about that bit.
      I wish there was some way for him to know how important he was to a small circle of young Gen-Xers who discovered him to our eternal joy. He was someone who channeled our sense that things weren't OK and they probably weren't going to get better... and they didn't.

    I think being at peace is more important than being happy. Being happy denotes experiencing an extreme high and what goes up must come down like a rollercoaster. Being at peace is a long and steady ride. Happiness demands conditions that aren't sustainable. Being at peace is accepting the ups and downs as they come.

It doesn't have the same impact to the same broad array of listeners since fans outside of a musical genre usually don't even get exposed to the lyrics. Additionally, lyrics aren't always heard as speech in the same way that the words in a comedy act are. Lyrics can get lost in the shuffle of the music, and musicians often don't take their lyrics beyond the stage. When they do, well, look at what happened to Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington.

      Isn't that the opposite of what Dillon is getting at? I think he's suggesting that for a lot of people, due to either their cumulative foibles (which I think is REALLY fucking hard to change once you're an adult) or lack of talent, means that going on a great "journey" might not be the best thing to do if one is pursuing happiness?
      Fwiw, I actually don't agree with Dillon, I genuinely believe if you truly go on a journey like a burning crusade you'll probably end up being fulfilled, driven etc in the process. But that is contingent on you not half assing it and having some kind of aptitude....and obviously not trying to do something ridiculous like be an a professional football player if you're 45 and in a wheelchair.

    I appreciate Tim Dillon's down to earth wisdom. I'm all about following your heart and the entrepreneurial spirit, but he's right to speak honestly about the darker side of the sort of achievement culture going on. Live for something greater than yourself, whether that is your loved ones, the joy of others, or an ideal... that's fulfillment in my opinion.

      He is speaking about those who were never destined for anything being sold on a dream. Its actually quite cynical if not 100% correct. Look, maybe 1% of people achieve great things, maybe 10%, maybe less. Some people need to be motivated. Some people do not have what it takes. I like the message of Gary Vee etc. I need it in my life. I like to believe other people do too but I guess they dont all need that. It takes someone who has been down the road and back again to express it. Tim Dillon has been through the ringer. Look, the man followed his fucking dreams. He needed that shit. He would have been dead in a bottle if not for comedy. I needed my dreams too. Not everybody needs dreams. But its kind of sad. Idk.

    • @ceruleanswim
      @ceruleanswim Před rokem +1

      @@ivywoodxrecords It is a dark, cynical picture Tim paints, I agree. My takeaway is that the real contrast is between empty ego gratification versus dedicating yourself to something greater.
      I think for artists and innovators, their craft truly is transcendent, and their entrepreneurial dedication is not about egotism and fame for it's own sake. (I'm an artist and would put myself in this category. I hope it's not too presumptuous to guess you would put yourself in that category too. Tim certainly falls in this category.)
      For the majority of people, that transcendent something greater is found in family and friendships, and the culture of clout chasing is a tragically unfulfilling pursuit.
