Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a well-known British philosopher, writer and speaker, best known for his interpretation of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. He left behind more than 25 books and an audio library of nearly 400 talks, which are still in great demand.

We build much of our life on assumptions. Alan Watts has a beautiful way of dismantling those assumptions, letting us down gently and then painting a new vision on a new foundation. Although Alan Watts passed away nearly 50 years ago, his words continue to make sense in a time where common sense is lacking. I am currently working with Alan Watts' son on a graphic novel to illustrate the wisdom of Alan Watts. If there are specific Alan Watts speeches you love and would like to see in the book, please send them my way (Email info@afterskool.net). And if you want to help support this venture, please consider supporting After Skool on Patreon. Thank you. www.patreon.com/AfterSkool

Kind of like King Solomon, after chasing after everything he comes to the conclusion that most of what we race around for is vanity, a striving after the wind and that happiness and contentment can be found in simplicity.

Your Watts video "The Illusion of Time, Money and Ego" jump started my journey and changed my life forever. I'm so happy you keep returning to the Watts well, the man's already a genius and yet your art takes his words and provides a whole new context that imaginations can really grab on to...and it takes his elevated concepts and makes them so much easier to understand. I am in grateful awe.

I’m a simple woman, I see After Skool and Alan Watts, I click.😆
I believe the purpose of life is to find the thing(s) that you enjoy doing so much that you forget time exists. When we are in this flow, we are serving spirit and that’s the most beautiful and meaningful state we can achieve. That feeling of being so united with the experience that you become it and disappear. It can’t be explained, only felt.

Nothing matters, nothing means anything, there's nothing to do, there's no point, there's no goal but there's also no boredom, there's no negative meanings attached to the meaninglessness, it's just perfectly meaningless and it's awesome. When I was 19, meditations revealed a great truth. I saw with my own eyes how we are all connected. Then later on I saw How the more we try to quantify existence the more shortsighted we become.
As children we get it. The world is colorful and one thing not parts. Then our societal enforcements systematically indoctrinate us into objectivism instead of subjectivism. Those people, that cloud, that land.
Such sensibilities ain’t spiritually sustainable. It creates walls where there are none. It cheapens life to a heartbreaking degree

You start by shedding yourself of all pettiness and immaturity. No more beef (with anyone). No more triggers. No more harboring resentment. Letting go is much easier than holding on. And remember, this is not for others to behold. It’s for you and your inner peace. Meditation will bring it all together. The universe will reveal great spiritual truths once it sees you are ready to understand. Godspeed

When I was a child I had an epiphany of sorts. I was accustomed to seeing a clock in our kitchen, but one day I really "saw" it. I was aware of its presence on the wall, the flowers drawn on it, the shape of it. Before I could only see "a clock." I recognized it for its "meaning" its purpose, rather than actually seeing it. In this way we often see the world through a lens of interpreting things according to categories or stereotypes.

People are drawn to the things he is talking about because these things have a tendency to resonate with us all. And the reason they resonate with us all is because they’re speaking to an ultimate truth that we all know. Deep, deep down, far, far in our very selves. The ultimate and undeniable truth. The thing WE ALL long for and seek, via different means. Love, joy and peace. An end to any and all suffering.

I agree with his view point and disagree. I agree with the point that we shouldn't forget how fragile life is and that our time in this form is short. However, we have to be able to dissect stuff analytically while being able to think critically. Lots of people have lost their abilities to think critically and just do at their told, opting to not use their scalpals and just be too simple. At the end of the day we all have to be able to question why things are the way they are dissecting analytically is apart of what keeps us free. We just need to find the happy medium I think

everything has a duality, also depends on lifestyle i guess, youre right about finding a happy medium; everything should be balanced. but for example when youre walking through nature, i find it so much more calming and real to just let things be, not naming everything. puting labels and judgements on anything ties a string to the thing, and then youre left with an association that your mind made, and i found out that i cant trust my mind, because its basically just made up of things that i experienced in this life, so by not puting any labels or judgements on anything youre able to experience actual truth! but ofcourse this doesnt apply in every situation, i just try to do it as much as possible. but these are also just words haha! peace and love from me to who ever is reading this

You would love his teachings. Dissects everything into spirituality. Steiner and Alan are great teachers but are almost like polar opposite but once you combined their knowledge it will open a whole new world. Also Yogananda is one of the greatest gurus of our time give him a search as well. Truth is wisdom and wisdom is God

I somewhat agree, with a caveat. We should not throw away our scalpels and just live an unreflective or unquestioning life. We should, however, be mindful of getting ourselves into the trap of allowing our analytical nature to create unsolvable problems, and then (most importantly) turning on the pressure to demand that we MUST solve them.
As a student of philosophy, I know full well that I will never reach the day when I put down my books, throw my hands in the air and say "Aha! I now understand all of this perfectly and can put all that I know into words that other people will understand!" Instead of focusing on reaching that impossible destination, I instead choose to continue learning out of the love of wisdom and a desire to understand things as best as I am able.

I think it is kinda lacking of some kind of reflection that a person explains that explanations are control and we shouldn't do that. I guess that kind of person doesn't enjoy explanations about things, but enjoys explanations about humans. That's fine, everyone is different, but to state that explanations and analysations about things are control or necessarily a bad thing is not really fine for me.
Myself, I greatly enjoy thinking about why the sunset is red, and how the colors come to be. I understand how that works, and I enjoy thinking about it. Doing that doesn't take away from the beauty of the sunset. In fact, it makes it even more magic for me. Not less. It's not a problem at all, as it doesn't impair my enjoyment of being in the moment. Thinking about these things IS being in the moment. It's a natural part of it for me. Not something that is "foreign" to it.
Everyone is different. Some people enjoy thinking about physics. Some do not. That's fine. Nobody needs to do anything. But to think that doing what you personally don't enjoy is somehow problematic or wrong is in a way some sort of "othering", and I guess I didn't expect such a thing from Alan Watts. Maybe he didn't meant it that way and the visuals of this video are expressing something that he didn't intend to say. I don't know.

The conclusion that life is about life itself and being alive, was also reached by Leo Tolstoy. I tend to agree with these great thinkers.
To truly appreciate life and what it has to offer, one needs to get out of the confines of the city. Buy a house on the outside somewhere in nature, have a family, a garden, join a small community, and just enjoy the feeling of being alive. Cities have become too big and unnatural to be able to represent what life is about. You can't even see the stars! Humans weren't built to be able to live in cities.

The people who broadcast the pains and sufferings in the world siphon off your energy by your engagement alone. I've fallen for it too but stop engaging and reclaim your portion of energy.

I fully disagree with the city Statement
I feel way more alive visiting a huge vibrating city. All the people inside, their emotions, the possibilitys to eat, drink, Listen and watch increadible stuff is way beyond other places.
The real answer simply is, cities are damn expensive so most people with a normal job tend to get stuck in suffering - hardly even going out and live. They suffer because they eager the life of the rich, not willing to accept they are to poor to live confienient in such an expensive city
So my Advise would be: live as near a big City as you can afford to, without dramatically shorten your financial abilities to spend your free time
