In my opinion square toe shoes are hideous only if they´re not square enough (flat enough). There´s like an uncanny valley, both round and VERY flat squared are stylish, but the narrower flat square toe is what everyone hates, specially with that multiple piece stitch used in cheap rubber sole shoes. What happens is that a narrow square toe shoe is very inexpensive to manufacture and requires less material to achieve a comfortable length because it´s not as narrow, therefore it´s rare to find a quality shoe in this design. The wider flat toe shoes are more fashion oriented and no-longer are produced with budget constraints, so they will have better materials and construction and they will undoubtedly look less cheap, they´re still a statement piece so I'd wear them with understated-minimal garments, otherwise the outfit would look saturated.

I make a distinction between square-toe shoes, (in my view, 'square' implies actual right angles) and shoes with trapezoidal toes, which I often hear referred to as chisel toes. I think the former are hideous, but the latter can be an great alternative to the round toe.

  • @gilbs72
    @gilbs72 Před 6 lety +5

The shoes and fashion community coined a term for those "attractive square-toed shoes": CHISEL-TOED. They also taper to a point when viewed from the side. They're considered fine shoes and separate from the wider square-toed shoes (which are really square, viewed from the top and sides).

I hear people who are into quality shoes raving against the ‘square toed shoe’ and how they should be avoided. When I think of a square toe shoe, I think of the extremely boxy look that does certainly look horrendous. However, if we look at the 348 Last by Crocket and Jones, it could be argued it's almost a hybrid of curved and box. They look great to me and are their shoes with this Last are some of their most popular. Such as the Hallam, Edgeware and Westbourne for example. I’d love to own all three. :-D

My take away from this video:
Advantages of square toe: good for those with wide feet, can be practical, and some are actually quite stylish.
Advantages of round toe: great for those that struggle discerning left from right and for those that ride horses.
I'm sorry, but not the best arguments. I know for guys who have smaller than average feet, when I see them in round toe shoes the only word that comes to mind is "dainty" which is certainly not a word a man wants to be described as

i work at an office and it has me do a lot of walking delivering paperwork and i find wearing square toe shoes much more beneficial than round toes; i dont end up having sore toes by the end of the day. Round toes, i would wear on a formal event. I find those who outright discriminate the square toe without even trying it on come off rather pretentious. But like every individual, no feet are the same. So wear what makes you feel comfortable - square or round - because we all have different paths to walk on.

I also like to reiterate the fact that for the most part, men tend to like footwear that goes beyond the style and into real substance. I personally like shoes that look good but really work and are durable for the most part. a footwear should be 75% function and 25% fashion.

Two disadvantages of a curve toe shoe in today's time:
    1. The extended portion (the narrow toe) interferes with driving. I find driving with a square toe to be a lot easier as I'm able to shift gears much easily. The rounded toe extends the length of the shoe, which frequently gets snagged in the foot well of the car.
    2. Curved toe shoes are a lot easier to get trampled on by others when at crowded places, like on the subway.

So you are saying that you don't like square toed shoes because its history is associated with medieval commoners who couldn't afford shoes made for their left and right feet? This argument makes no sense in the modern day. Their association with something other than affluence is what makes them a great counter-culture statement item, which is probably what their resurgence is about.
I find that square toed shoes work better for wider leg pants like bell-bottoms (70s) and boot cut jeans (90s), which I know are currently not in style, but when they were (and whenever they'll be in style again...).

I have a great pair of cold Haan derby wing tips, and they are long but have a slight square toe. They look amazing even though they have a slight square toe

  • @grandmasterwilliamj.muller2014

Personally i have really wide feet and the round toed shoes literally smashed my feet near the tip. Square toed shoes however fit perfectly and feel amazing

There is a big difference between a "Square Toe" shoe and a "Chisel Toe" shoe. Why did you categorize the two in the same discussion? Chisel is still considered modern and fashionable and can be interchanged with round toe on just about any occasion. Chisel is arguably even the more formal than round. That said, there is NO place for a square toed shoe.

I have to agree, some square toe shoes are o.k. ( slightly squared), but my preference is the rounded toe.

I do own one pair of square toes and they don't look too terrible, but my preference lies with curved toe shoes. I really love chisel toe shoes though, they elongate my legs moreso than curved toe shoes.

Real Men Real Style I'd that it is the case. At least here in São Paulo you can easily find people using those. Even my father has a pair of those totally squared shoes you showed in the video.
It kills me to see my old man using them but most people don't think the same. Well, of course the best would be doing a most deep research in the matter but I'll try to add a photo of one of the most popular models nowadays.

I have a question, Antonio. I understand that in general, a good quality/high end pair of shoes is supposed to have the bottom of their soles made with leather. However there's the disadvantage, at least in my experience, that they will be really slippery and in general they will not isolate from ground temperature. My question is: Am I wrong to think that, after spending €300+ on a pair of shoes, they are supposed to be perfect and therefore I shouldn't have the need of modifying them with some extra rubber sole?". Thank you in advance, and great video!

Square toes *look* just fine by themselves; I happen to like moderately angular styling. But what is best on my feet is a separate issue, and fashion is totally irrelevant.
I go for wide, round toes for several reasons:
    1) My feet DO differ from each other, in several respects.
    2) They're easier to clean & polish.
    3) Square toes are more vunerable to scuffing.
    4) My toes form a round shape, more or less, and it's said that your shoes toes should fit the shape of your foot.
    5) The brands of shoes that I'm most comfortable in, just happen to make round toes: Timberland, Clarks, etc. So I'm taking the hint.
    6) Skinny ankles (see article).
So, enough of anyone's opinions . . . including my own. I'll go with what works, and with what fits.

Curved toes are more elegant, but square toes aren't all that bad, and, like you said, have their practical advantages. As long as they have a taper, they will be fine.
