  • “Most of Crimea can be held at risk, as I think logistics nodes, the Kerch Bridge, but also in southern and eastern Ukraine.”
ATACMS from the US will allow Ukraine to target “every square centimetre” of “Russian operational targets”, says Major General Mick Ryan.

Thanks for having an Aussie on, much obliged from us down under! Appreciate his insights on Ukraine, AUKUS and Australia's passiveness in supplying Ukraine (we've done some, but defo could do more). Agreed that democracies are a precious, new thing, that should be defended anywhere in the world, esp in places that are strategically important (like Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Taiwan etc).

I was listening to this CZcams clip on my cell phone earlier today and when the guest said that Ukraine had not been rotating brigades earlier in the war but recently they had started to rotate them; and then, he offered his personal opinion that this was good, I first thought it was funny and then I thought maybe he was saying generally speaking earlier in the war, Ukraine had not rotated brigades, but that sometimes they did rotate brigades. Maybe brigade rotations were few and far in between, but it did happen, in other words. Maybe he was pressed for time and needed to be clear that for the most part brigades were not being rotated but such rotations were now the practice rather than the exception. I remember on July 11, 2023, I drove to a spot where a brigade rotation occurred right in front of my eyes. This spot was a couple towns/villages from Kramatorsk. Mobile Howitzers and many other vehicles were driving down the highway in the direction to Bakhmut. Mobile howitzers were being removed by trailer and those arriving drove down the road to Bakhmut. If you were to draw a straight line from Bakhmut to where I was, I was 10 miles from the front. I later was told by a Ukrainian NYT interpreter that a brigade rotation was taking place and unbeknownst to the interpreter (unless I had mentioned what I had observed - I can't remember) I had observed it for more than 2 hours ten miles from the front. It was not a line of vehicles one right after another. It was a vehicle here and there. There was a stationary tank behind some trees apparently waiting for orders and likely securing the area. There were a number of check points that I went through before I reached my last check point. There was a check point maybe 50 yards in front of me from where I observed the rotation. There was a light rain shower that refreshed the area during the warm afternoon. I found it rather interesting that I found what would be similar to U.S. army K-rations hidden away from the road under some brush. I had used the spot near it as a latrine when I came across five or six blue packagings.

Futura Doctrina is Mick's recently established free Substack page, about contemporary war and competition, as well as the technological and human aspects of these areas. Additionally explores issues related to the war in Ukraine, Chinese aggression against Taiwan and Indo-Pacific defence.
War Transformed... Mick's book February 2022 explores change in the strategic environment such as geopolitics, technology, demographics and climate change. It also examines how institutions can respond to these challenges through new ideas, new organisational constructs and investing in their people.
White Sun War ....The United States and China go to war when China invades the island of Taiwan. Deploying their most futuristic technologies in this grand strategic competition of the 21st century, the stakes could not be higher. This fictional account views this future war through the eyes of the American, Chinese, and Taiwanese caught up in the maelstrom, revealing the heartbreak, courage, leadership, and despair of high-tech warfare played out on land, at sea, in space, and in cyberspace.

Ukrainians have to fix their own mobilization program. They have always needed 150,000 new recruits per year. It will take Ukrainians 18 months to have a recruit go from Basic Training to Brigade Offensive Operations Trainings. In addition to the above recruits: NCO Training is factored into the timeline; about 4,500 Officers need to be recruited and trained in this timeline; and Specialty Training for Officers and NCOs required for Battalion and Brigade Staffs are required. Battle planning at Battalion and Brigade involve Warning Orders, terrain analysis, threat and friendly Unit analysis, options to achieve Objective(s), threat options, logistics, coordination of fires, intel gaps, Commander decision points, and timelines for options. These all have to be part of war gaming. The Commander’s Intent and final adoption of a plan has to be war gamed again if substantially different from an option. Battle planning needs to be completed with in the 1/3-2/3 rule.

I've been watching all the news reports and listening to all the different "military experts" since Russia invaded Ukraine and started the war. But what I can not understand is why all I hear is about the fight on the front lines!! Come on it's not rocket science, if Ukraine uses the storm shadow missiles, which they've had for a long time now, to blow the Korch bridge to smithereens and then attack the train lines on the land bridge and totally destroy the Russian supply lines and logistics Ukraine could win the war in a matter of weeks....what's stopping them for doing these obvious things? Is Putin doing his usual B.S. of saying he will use nuclear weapons if the Ukrainian's flattern the Korch bridge or what?
