We all know Italy produced the greatest generation of Defenders in history. I think it's safe to say that Spain has produced the greatest generation of Midfielders.
Remember when he played for Liverpool, I was at the game and him and Gerrard before kick off on either side of the pitch playing the ball to each other. Gerrard was all about spraying long passes but Alonzo just stroked the ball different. Gerrard never had to move an inch. Crossfield right on his foot every time. Beautiful.
Spain midfield in 2008-2012 was magnificent. Xavi with his weighted pass, iniesta dribble, cesc vision, Xabi long pass, Busi composure, Silva explosiveness
This guy was something else. He played out his last days in my club, and I still miss Using him in FC Bayern in FIFA 15 & 16. He made it easy to create dangerous attacking situations with people like Robben and Ribery running in behind. It's not just the weight of his passing (which btw was exceptional), putting the ball in a dangerous area is one thing. Sending it through with inch perfect curve, spin and velocity to be very conveniently received by the attacker is a whole other. Alonso did that with finesse, every single time! Let's not forget he was also a nightmare for any goalkeeper off his line.
Natural talent to be able to judge how much weight to put on each pass he's not just hooting those balls he's accurately judged how much pressure to put on each of them. Brilliant
He sit with Pirlo and Scholes together in the "the best long passer" Not just the accuracy, but how they kicked the ball that easy to handle by their teammates
Amongst all those best midfielders, Xavi, Scholes and Alonso are the only ones whom I enjoy watching merely they pass. Whether it is a simple short pass or not, I can see so much wisdom, reflexes, composure, confidence, vision and accuracy within.
I saw him debut as pro being a kid. I still remember that Real Sociedad with Valeri Karpin, Nihat, Kovacevic, Aranburu, Westerveld. That team back then was what is Atletico today
He was just one of those passers. When he got the ball and had the pitch in front of him it was the clear signal for any striker to get on a bike and recieve the ball. He would spot people making the run in a whole different stadiums and games and make the pass fly over cities and still be perfectly controlable right onto the recievers feet. Magic

oh yeah, he is just one of those "extraterrestrials" that played for real madrid over the years. players like him are the reason why that club feels frankly magical and surely xabi alonso's sheer talent and mastery only helped to reinforce that feeling.
Glad to see him appreciated. He was criminally underrated alongside Xavi & Iniesta. Even under-achieving Fabregas was higher rated. I used Alonso as a DM in a 2014 Germany WC 3-5-2 formation with Bayern and won a FIFA tournament. Memorable.
without a doubt if i were a manager i would search for this kind of player. because of him the midfield jobs seems very easy and picking out pinpointing the flankers,, wingers, strikers is just wonderful. covering half of the field with just one pass too good.
